Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS... A strong storm developing in the Gulf of Alaska
today will move north over the Eastern Interior Mon and Mon night
and to the Eastern Arctic Coast on Tue. This will bring a mix of
rain and snow to the Eastern Interior Mon and Mon night that will
diminish Tue. A 982 low will affect the YK Delta on Wed. This
will bring rain and northeast winds of 25 to 35 mph to the West
Coast south of the Bering Strait late Tue night and Wed. A strong
storm is forecast to moves east across the Bering Sea late this
week, but it appears that it should remain south of the Yukon
Delta.

.DISCUSSION...
Upper Levels and Analysis...
At 500 hpa a deep longwave trough continues over the Eastern
Bering Sea and the West Coast of Alaska as a 529 dam low remains
in place near Nunivak Island. After a shortwave moves up across
the Interior today, ridging will build over the Interior Tuesday.
Chinook flow will set up over the Interior Wednesday through
Friday.

Central and Eastern Interior...A shortwave aloft will bring mostly
rain showers with a mix of snow expected in the valley level and
snow above 2000 feet. The low will continue to move north and will
push to the Eastern Arctic Coast on Tuesday. At valley level,
such as in Fairbanks, snow should melt as it hits the ground. At
elevations above 2000 feet, between 2 and 4 inches of snow
accumulation is possible between through Tuesday. Drier conditions
Tuesday afternoon through Thursday.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Low ceilings and snow showers will continue today with snow
increasing over the eastern North Slope. The low pressure system
moving north out of the Gulf of Alaska today will continue to
move north along the ALCAN border with the Eastern Brooks Range
and the Eastern North Slope seeing 2-4 inches of snow tonight
through Tuesday night. Easterly winds strongest along the Arctic
Coast will produce some blowing snow with reduced visibility late
tonight and into Tuesday night. High temperatures today and
Tuesday will be in the 30s with a few upper 20s in the Brooks
Range. Low temperatures tonight and on Tuesday night will be
mainly in the 20s.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Lingering showers from a weak low pressure system along the YK
Delta Coast into Bristol Bay will continue into Tuesday morning.
A storm now in the Western Bering Sea will move east along the
Aleutians through Tuesday, and then to the YK Delta on Wednesday.
This will bring rain and northeast winds of 25 to 35 mph to the
West Coast south of the Bering Strait late Tuesday night and
Wednesday. A strong storm is forecast to moves east across the
Bering Sea late this week, but it appears that it should remain
south of the Yukon Delta.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
Elevated surf possible north facing shore Bering Strait and St
Lawrence Island Wed and Thu with north winds 30 kt. A strong storm
is forecast to moves east across the Bering Sea late this week,
but it appears that it should remain south of the Yukon Delta,
with northeast winds occuring over the West Coast with this.
