.SYNOPSIS...
All eyes will be on the remnants of Typhoon Merbok as it moves
north through the Bering and into the Southern Chukchi by Sunday
morning, potentially bringing historical coastal flooding due to
storm surge to many coastal communities along the coast from the
Lower Yukon Delta north into Norton Sound and to the Bering
Strait. Winds gusting as high as 80 to 90 mph will create
significant wave action on top of the surge, pushing water well
inland in some low lying areas. This is a dangerous storm,
residents are encouraged, if they have not already, take immediate
action to protect themselves and their property.

.DISCUSSION...
Upper Levels and Analysis...
The current pattern at 500 hpa consists of the stacked remnants of
Typhoon Merbok that sits about 130 nm west of St Matthew Island at
503 decameters (dam) while weak ridging is pushing into the
Western Interior. Over the next several days, the remnants of
Typhoon Merbok moves to just north of the Bering Strait Saturday
morning at 516 dam, and into the Southern Chukchi by Sunday
morning around 529 dam, with some model differences. While the
weak ridge across the Western Interior flattens and the flow
becomes zonal across the Interior on Saturday, with a shortwave
moving across the Central and Eastern Interior. By Sunday
afternoon, weak ridging pushes north into the Central and Eastern
Interior as high pressure builds across the Gulf of Alaska.

At the surface, the remnants of Typhoon Merbok has moved to 130
nm west St Matthew Island at 942 mb. Powerful winds will be
associated with this storm as it moves north through the Bering,
with a wide swath of sustained 40 to 60 mph winds moving into the
Northeast Bering and Lower Yukon Delta, then into Norton Sound
and the Bering Strait tonight. By Saturday morning, the remnants
of Merbok will be in the Bering Strait at 962 mb with leeside
troughing north of the Alaska and Brooks Ranges and then Merbok
moves into the Southern Chukchi Sunday morning. Strong winds will
push inland, across the Western Interior, and then north with
strong offshore flow developing along the Northwest Arctic Coast
by this evening. Elsewhere, a tight pressure gradient will develop
across the Alaska Range tonight producing gusty winds through
passes into Saturday afternoon.

Model Discussion...
Model spread between solutions as far as feature position, track,
and strength remains in general good agreement through Saturday.
Solutions diverge late Saturday night into early Sunday morning
concerning placement of movement of synoptic scale features. With
that being said, for this afternoon's forecast package, we went
with a general blend of model solutions, making minor changes to
the inherited grids.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Relatively benign conditions will continue through this afternoon
with low ceilings and areas of fog along the coast while inland
will see a mix of sun and clouds. Rain moves into the area
tonight, impacting the Western Brooks Range and parts of the
Northwest Coast. As the remnants of Merbok moves north of the
Bering Strait, storm surge will push north into the Chuckchi Sea,
affecting portions of the Northwest Arctic Coast, west of
Utqiagvik. See the latest warning and advisory for complete

www.weather.gov/fairbanks. East to southeasterly winds will
increase 15 to 30 mph this evening, with the strongest winds along
the Northwest Arctic Coast, diminishing Saturday night 10 to 20
mph. Expect high temperatures in the 40s to lower 50s along the
coast and lower to mid 50s inland with lows dipping into mid 30s
to near 40 over the next several days.

West Coast and Western Interior...
All the focus across the region today into the weekend will be on
the remnants of Typhoon Merbok as it moves through the Bering
Sea. This storm will be the culprit behind a major coastal
flooding event that will impact many coastal communities across
the West Coast. The strongest winds will move to the coast this
evening and continue through Saturday, while the highest storm
surge will move to the Lower Yukon Coast this evening, into Norton
Sound Saturday, and the Chukchi Sea Region by Sunday. Coastal
flooding will continue through Saturday as strong winds hold the
storm surge in the area and then begin to recede Sunday morning
for areas south of the Bering Strait as the storm center moves
north to near Point Hope. See the latest warnings for complete
details on timing and impacts of the coastal flooding for your
area at www.weather.gov/fairbanks. Another concern is the
potential flooding on rivers due to the storm surge pushing water
upstream and runoff from the heavy rains, we will continue to
monitor this as well. As briefly mentioned above, but in more
detail, strong winds will increase this afternoon across St
Lawrence Island to the Lower Yukon Delta, into Norton Sound by
this evening, and spread north to Kotzebue Sound tonight. Speeds
really ramp up, with a wide area of sustained winds 40 to 60 mph
along the coast, with gusts 55 to 80 mph, and possible peak gusts
to near 90 mph along the Capes. Inland, winds east of the Nulato
hills will not be as strong, but expect gusts up to 35 mph across
the Middle Yukon Valley.

Another issue with this storm as it moves through the Bering will
be the heavy rains that it will produce. Rain that is currently
falling across the Lower Yukon Delta and St Lawrence Island will
continue to spread northeast across the area through this
afternoon, reaching the southern slopes of the Western Brooks
Range overnight. There will be a wide range of rainfall amounts
through Sunday, ranging from 0.50 to 3.5 inches. The highest
amounts will fall across the Bendeleben Mountains, the Nulato
Hills, and the Upper Noatak and Kobuk Valleys. High temperatures
through Sunday will climb into the upper 40s to lower 50s with
lows generally bottoming out in the lower to mid 40s.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Any areas of fog, as depicted on satellite imagery, should erode
away this afternoon, leaving behind a mix of sun and clouds across
most of the region. Precipitation chances increase tonight
through Saturday with energy moving into the area from a powerful
storm in the Bering. Winds, generally variable to 10 mph except
near the Alaska Range where gusts through passes increase from the
south this afternoon to around 50 mph and continue into Saturday

Extended Forecast for Days 4 through 7...
For the extended period that begins on Monday, active weather
will continue as another storm moves north out of the Northern
Pacific into the West Coast and Western Interior, then across the
the Central and Eastern Interior as the low moves north and east
across the state. By the latter part of the extended period, model
guidance is showing another strong storm moving across the Bering
Sea and into the West Coast, stay tuned...

.HYDROLOGY...
Moderate to heavy rainfall over the next several days is
forecasted over the Seward Peninsula and Western Brooks Range, as
the remnants of Typhoon Merbok tracks northeastward through the
Bering Strait. Expect three-day rainfall totals (today through
Sunday night) around 3 inches at Red Dog Mine, around 5 inches in
the peaks of the Kigluaik and Bendeleben Mountains and peaks of
the Western Brooks Range. Rivers and streams draining these areas
could see significant rises, with potential for minor flooding
along smaller creeks and streams including tributaries of the
Noatak, Kobuk, Kivalina, Wulik, Snake and Niukluk Rivers.
