Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Seasonable temperatures will continue along with wet conditions
across Northern AK into next week with the exception being the
Eastern Interior where chinook winds will cause warmer and drier
conditions Sunday and Monday.

.DISCUSSION...

Upper levels and Analysis...
A longwave trough over the Western Bering Sea contains a
vertically stacked low which contains the remnants of Typhoon
Hinnamnor. This upper level low will move to the Eastern Bering
Sea on Sun, and to the Yukon Delta on Mon. This is building a
ridge aloft ahead of it over Eastern Alaska on Sun and Mon and
will cause chinook winds across the Alaska Range Sun and Mon with
warming and drying over the Eastern Interior. The low aloft will
progress over Alaska by the middle of next week. This will bring a
return to seasonally cool and wet conditions to the Interior by
the middle of the next week.

On the surface a 1016 mb high pressure system centered 350 nm
north of Demarcation Point continues to produce low ceilings and
dense fog with onshore winds along the North Slope. A weak low
over the Eastern Brooks Range will continue to weaken and move
into to Canada. A strong low in the Western Bering Sea that
contains the remnants of Typhoon Hinnamnor will move to the
Southeast Bering Sea as a 988 mb low by 4pm Sun, and to the Yukon
Delta as a 992 mb low by 4pm Mon. This will bring rain to the West
Coast and Western Interior south of 65N tonight, and then across
most of the West Coast and Western Interior Sun and Sun night into
Mon. This will bring another 0.50-1.00 inch of rain to the West
Coast and Western Interior tonight through Mon.

Model Discussion...
The 10/12 UTC models all initialized well against the 12z surface
analysis and against the 12z upper air observations as well as
verifying well against the 18z surface analysis. The models are
in decent agreement out through the rest of the weekend and into
the middle of next week with the synoptic scale patterns, however
significant differences emerge amongst the model families on the
position, track and strength of a strong low pressure system
forecasted to move into the Southern Being Sea late in the week.

Central and Eastern Interior... Showers will continue today
although with a diminishing trend into tonight. A warming and
drying trend will begin on Sunday and will continue into early
next week with high temperatures reaching into the upper 50s and
lower 60s and low temperatures dropping into the 30s and lower
40s.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A brief break in the showers is on tap today for the West Coast
today and for the Western Interior tonight as the showers move
east out of the area. A weather front will bring another round of
rain to the Yukon Delta late tonight. Precipitation associated
with this front will spread north along the west coast and east
into the western Interior on Sunday with wet conditions continuing
into Monday. This front will also bring east to southeasterly
winds around 30 mph to areas along the west coast on Monday. A
much stronger storm develops in the southern Bering Sea by late
week and will need to be closely monitored for possible coastal
impacts late in the week.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
An extensive area of low stratus and fog along continues along the
coast and will likely persist through the end of the weekend and
into early next week. into the weekend. A trough of low pressure
over the northern Interior combined with an area of high pressure
over the Beaufort Sea will continue to bring breezy easterly
winds to areas along the coast through early this next week. The
brooks range will continue to see a mix of rain and snow today
with precipitation tapering off later tonight. Minor snow
accumulations were noted overnight in the Brooks Range.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
A deep low is forecast to develop and move into the Southern
Bering Sea by Thursday of next week. Computer models continue to
struggle with the strength, track of this storm. Small differences
on the track of this storm will produce significant differences
on potential impacts wit this storm. Stay tuned.

.HYDROLOGY...
Rises continue on rivers draining the south slopes of the Brooks
Range east of the Dalton Highway, and on the Nenana and Delta and
Upper Tanana Rivers which drain the south slopes of the Alaska
Range. Other rivers should remain fairly steady. No flooding is
expected.
