.SYNOPSIS...
Skies continue to clear over the Central and Eastern Interior with
valley fog that developed overnight rapidly dissipating early
this afternoon. Clouds and showers are moving into the YK Delta
and will continue to push north and east over the Western Interior
and into the Brooks Range Saturday and Sunday. High pressure and
onshore flow continue to keep low ceilings, fog and showers over
much of the North Slope.

.DISCUSSION...

Upper Levels and Analysis...
At 500 mb a weak flow pattern with a col is forming over western
Alaska with anchoring upper level lows over the Southern Bering
Sea and Near Banks Island and upper level high pressure centers
over the Chukchi Sea and over the Eastern Gulf of Alaska and
Yukon. This pattern will remain in place essentially through the
weekend and early next week. A deformation zone will develop from
the YK Delta north and east over the Central Brooks Range and
extending to Demarcation Point. This will be the focus of showers
for the next several days. The high pressure center aloft
combined with the surface high pressure over the Chukchi Sea will
produce low level onshore flow and will continue to produce low
ceilings, fog and showers over the North Slope, especially along
the coastal areas to the East of Utqiagvik. The high pressure
center over the Eastern Gulf of Alaska and over the Yukon will
produce southerly flow over the Central and Eastern Interior which
will limit shower activity and will produce gusty winds at times
in and near the Alaska Range Passes as shortwaves pass over the
Alaska Range from South to North through early next week.

Models...
The 19th at 12z model suite initialized well against the 12z
surface analysis as well as the 12z upper air observations and
verified well against the 18z surface analysis. Model spread has
increased over previous runs as is typical with blocked flow
especially in the extended range. The longwave pattern becomes
highly amplified with a deep trough over the Bering Sea and strong
ridging over the Western Bering Sea and over British Columbia and
the Yukon. This is a fairly benign pattern for Northern Alaska
this time of year other periods of rain on the West Coast and
episodes of strong winds through the Alaska Range.

Central and Eastern Interior...Southerly gap winds are expected to
increase this evening through Alaska Range passes and continue
through Sunday morning. At this time we expect wind gust in
and near the Alaska Range passes to remain below 50 mph. There
will be some showers and a few isolated thunderstorms mainly east
of Fairbanks this evening, but dry conditions are expected
Saturday and Sunday. Highs this afternoon will be mostly in the
low 60s, warming to the upper 60s Saturday and the upper 60s and
lower 70s on Sunday. Overall the weather will be very nice this
weekend and early next week over the Central and Eastern Interior.

West Coast and Western Interior...Increasing clouds this afternoon
are expected north of the Seward Peninsula as clouds and showers
associated with a front moving north along the coast move into
the area. There is a chance of rain Sunday and Monday along a
frontal boundary that will lie from Anaktuvuk Pass to the Yukon
Delta. Northwest Alaska will be mostly clear on Saturday. Winds
will generally be 15 mph or less through Monday. High temperatures
will be in the 50s and 60s with lows in the 40s.

North Slope and Brooks Range...Persistent onshore flow will
continue to produce low ceilings, fog and a few showers over much
of the North Slope but especially along the Arctic Coast to the
East of Utqiagvik into the weekend. A strong pressure gradient
between a high pressure system over the Chukchi Sea and low
pressure in the Interior will produce gusty north winds through
Brooks Range passes. The winds will increase to 15 to 20 mph
Saturday afternoon and continue through early Monday morning.
Winds along the coast will be northeast 5 to 15 mph tonight and
Saturday, increasing to 15 to 25 mph Saturday night and Sunday.
Highs will be in the 40s with a few 30s along the coast. Lows will
be in the 30s.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended Forecast For Days 4 Through 7...Normal to above normal
temperatures are expected for the Central and Eastern Interior with
showers and short periods of rain in the Western Interior and along
the West Coast. Northwest Alaska looks to remain mostly dry.
Southerly gap winds through the Alaska Range passes will continue
to be strong at times. A front may bring significant rainfall to
the West Coast during the Thursday to Friday timeframe.

.FIRE WEATHER...
The main concern this weekend will be southerly gap winds through
Alaska Range passes sustained around 25-30 mph tonight through
Sunday morning. Northeast winds 15-20 mph are also expected in the
Yukon Flats on Sunday. Minimum RHs will be above 40% today and
Sunday except near Delta Junction where they will be near 35%. On
Saturday min RHs will drop into the 35-40% range for valleys from
Fairbanks east. High temperatures in the Interior will be in the
60s to lower 70s.

.HYDROLOGY...
Rivers draining the northeast Brooks Range will continue to see
rapid rises as water from recent heavy rain moves downstream.
Water levels are expect to remain within the banks and flooding is
not expected. No other concerns at this time.
