Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
An active pattern today will continue into next week across
northern Alaska. Most of the state is under mostly cloudy skies
with areas across the Interior north into the Brooks Range observing
rainy conditions. These conditions will generally be the story
throughout the next several days as a number of weather fronts
move across the mainland. High surf concerns continue through this
evening across the Eastern Beaufort Sea Coast as west winds remain
strong, while elevated surf is expected to develop from the Seward
Peninsula south as strong north winds develop beginning tomorrow.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
The upper level pattern continues to be dominated by a longwave
trough feature stretching from the high Arctic south and eastward
across northern Alaska this afternoon. This troughing feature is
causing widespread below normal temperatures and mostly rainy
conditions, with not much of a reprieve from this theme going
through the middle of next week. A shortwave trough situated over
the Brooks Range will lift to the northeast tonight. A second
shortwave cutting through the Kuskokwim Valley will slide east
across the Alaska Range by tonight, creating westerly flow across
the area.

A strong shortwave will shoot from the Chukotsk Peninsula to the
Seward Peninsula by late tonight, bringing the next round of rain
across northern Alaska going into next week. Behind this
shortwave, the closed low in the Chukchi Sea will dive south
through the Bering Strait by Monday morning. This development will
bring even cooler temperatures and more rain going through early
week, especially along the West Coast.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Scattered to numerous showers continue to move northeast across
the area this afternoon. West to southwest winds 10 to 20 mph are
expected to or have developed as the weather front moves through.
Surface high pressure building across the area tonight will help
dry conditions for tomorrow. As the surface high pressure slides
into the Eastern Interior tomorrow afternoon, another weather
front will bring rainy conditions to the Central Interior by
tomorrow evening and eventually into Fairbanks by tomorrow night.
These rainy conditions will continue through Monday as rain will
push through the Eastern Interior. One tenth to one half inch of
rain are expected north of the Alaska Range, while in the Alaska
Range, anywhere from one to one and a half inches are possible
from tonight through Monday. Southerly flow through the Alaska
Range passes are expected to develop Sunday night through Monday,
with gusts 40 to 50 mph. Temperatures will remain below average
going through early next week.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the Northeastern
Brooks Range through Atigun Pass through tonight. Rainy conditions
this afternoon in that area should transition to snow tonight,
resulting in accumulating snow in the range of 2-4 inches above
3000 feet. Otherwise, strong westerly flow across the Arctic Coast
will dissipate tonight as weak high pressure builds across the
area. Easterly flow 15 to 25 mph across the Arctic Coast will
develop tomorrow as low pressure develops in the Chukchi Sea. A
A High Surf Advisory remains in effect through tonight along the
Eastern Beaufort Sea Coast. Cooler temperatures are expected today
with temperatures over the next several days remaining below
normal.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Mostly dry conditions this afternoon will give way to another
round of widespread rains across the West Coast and Western
Interior beginning tonight and lingering through Monday. This
weather front will bring storm total accumulations of one half to
one inch of rain during this time period. The surface low
associated with this front will move to the Seward Peninsula by
Sunday night, resulting in strong north to northwest winds to
develop. These winds will result in elevated surf from the Seward
Peninsula south Sunday to Monday. Temperatures will remain on the
cool side with highs in the low to mid 50s as wet and cloudy
conditions will persist into next week.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...Strong northwest flow
along the West Coast will increase the potential for elevated surf
from the Seward Peninsula south through Norton Sound and the Y-K
Delta Sunday night into Monday.

Extended Forecast Days 4 to 7...Models remain in good agreement
that a troughing pattern will persist until at least the middle of
next week. Details on how this troughing pattern will evolve going
through the rest of the week remains uncertain beyond Monday, but
a cooler than normal and wet pattern should be expected during
this period.

.FIRE WEATHER...
A cool and wet pattern will keep any continuing fire weather
concerns at a minimum through at least the beginning of next week.
Isolated wet thunderstorms today will generally be located in the
Fortymile Country region. Wetting rains will spread across most
areas from the Brooks Range south over the next several days, with
the least chances remaining in the Yukon Flats south to the
Fortymile Country during this timeframe. Temperatures will remain
in the 50s and 60s at valley levels for highs and the lowest RHs
in the low 40s limited to the Yukon Flats south to the Upper
Tanana Valley through the middle of next week.

.HYDROLOGY...
The wet pattern will result in generally rising rivers across the
Interior over the next several days. The heaviest rains will be in
the Alaska Range and Eastern Brooks Range, so rivers draining in
these areas will need to be monitored through early next week.
