Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
An active late summer early fall pattern is setting up over
Northern Alaska for the next several days with heavy rain, strong
winds and high surf along portions of the West Coast of Alaska,
heavy rain in the Western Interior and Western Brooks Range and
strong winds in the northern foothills of the Alaska Range and
the Brooks Range.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

Upper Levels and Analysis...
A strong 540 dam low anchoring a deep longwave trough over the
Eastern Bering Sea will continue to deepen to around 536 dam as
the low pushes north and east along the West Coast of Alaska
tonight and emerges over Eastern Norton Sound Monday afternoon and
weakens to 540 dam as it pushes north over Kotzebue Sound on
Tuesday morning and into the Southern Chukchi Sea Tuesday
afternoon. Deep layer southerly winds ahead of this low will move
over the Alaska Range tonight and will produce strong winds
gusting to 65 mph in favored locations in and near the northern
foothills and passes of the Alaska Range tonight and Monday and
will produce winds gusting to 45 mph along the northern slopes of
the Brooks Range on Tuesday. Wind Advisories have been issued for
the passes and northern foothills of the Alaska Range beginning
tonight and continuing into Monday evening. The strong down slope
winds will bring warm temperatures and mostly dry conditions to
areas from Fairbanks and east while the strong, deep and moist
south to southwest flow aloft will bring abundant moisture to the
West Coast, the Western Interior and the Western portions of the
Brooks Range tonight and Monday.

Strong west to southwest winds behind the low moving north along
the West Coast will bring elevated waters levels to the Lower YK
Delta and Eastern Norton Sound along south and west facing
coastlines. High Surf Advisories have been issued for these areas.
Please see Special Weather Statement and Advisor statements for
additional details. The heavy rain and gusty winds will push north
over the Western North Slope on Tuesday.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Warm and dry conditions again this afternoon and evening as south
winds increase ahead of a strong chinook. Winds will rapidly
increase later this evening from the south through the Alaska
Range Passes and long the northern foothills of the Alaska Range
with gust to 65 mph developing after midnight tonight and
continuing into Monday and diminishing Monday evening. Strong
winds are expected as far north as Delta Junction with wind gusts
to 55 mph expected to develop after midnight tonight. Wind Advisories
have been issued for these areas. Expect widespread mid 70s again
tomorrow ahead of a very moist front moving east out of the
Western Interior on Monday evening. Expect breezy conditions over
much of the Central and Eastern Interior ahead of this front on
Monday. Rain in the Western Interior shifts east with the cold
front late Monday, although much drier conditions will remain east
of the Minto Flats given the downslope flow. Temps drop
dramatically behind the cold front Tuesday, with highs 15+ degrees
cooler along with periods of showers and southwest winds.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Rain and wind continue to increase this evening as a strong fall
like storm pushes north along the West Coast tonight and Monday
for areas south of the Bering Strait and Monday night and Tuesday
for areas north of the Bering Strait as the low moves from Norton
Sound to Kotzebue Sound and then into the Southern Chukchi Sea
Monday night into Tuesday. Expect heavy rain to lift north
tonight through Monday with strong gale force winds as the dynamic
low moves north through Norton Sound and Kotzebue Sound. Expect
35 to 55 mph wind gusts from Saint Lawrence Island to the Norton
Sound coast, YK Delta, and the Bering Strait. Strong and gusty
South winds will also impact the Western Interior on Monday and
early Tuesday. Strong southwest to west winds behind the low
pressure will produce high surf in the Lower YK Delta where water
levels are expected to rise 3 to 4 feet above normal high tide
levels. High Surf is also expected in Eastern Norton Sound where
water level are expected to rise 4 to 6 feet above normal high
tide levels. See Special Weather Statement for more details.
Showers and strong west winds persist through Tuesday as the
strong low slowly weakens.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A remnant front is supporting showery weather over the region and
this will weaken and move off shore later this evening. The upper
flow quickly shifts to more southerly tonight and south winds
through the Brooks Range will rapidly increase. Heavy rain moves
across the Western Arctic Monday and shifts east Tuesday. Winds
peak everywhere from the coast to Brooks Range Monday with the
gradient slackening Tuesday. Expect south winds into the 35 to 50
mph range through the Brooks Range gaps Monday and Tuesday. Rain
will likely continue on and off along the Arctic Coast through
Wednesday as a secondary low forms in the vicinity of Prudhoe
Bay/Point Barrow. Dense fog is expected to develop along the
coastal areas tonight and then dissipate tomorrow as strong off
shore flow develops.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 1 and 2...
A strong low pressure will approach Southwest Alaska tonight and
will move north along the coast Monday, moving over Norton Sound
Monday evening and into Kotzebue Sound Monday night. The low will
continue to weak and push northwest into the Southern Chukchi Sea
Tuesday morning. Mainly off shore winds ahead of the low pressure
system will quickly transition to on shore winds behind the low as
the low continues to push to the north. Strong onshore winds are
likely in the Norton Sound and across all of Southwest Alaska.
These strong winds are expected to bring elevated surf up to 4-6
feet in Norton Sound with 3-4 feet across the Yukon Delta.

.FIRE WEATHER...
This afternoon is dry and much warmer over the Interior with
plentiful sun as the chinook pattern begins. Winds in the AK Range
rapidly increase tonight with wind gusts to 65 mph expected to
develop in and through the Alaska Range Passes and along the
northern foothills. Wind Advisories have been issued for these
areas. Winds will also become gusty from the south over the
entire Interior tomorrow with gusts to 15-20 mph over most of the
Interior Monday afternoon with some 20-30 mph gusts closer to the
Alaska Range.

Temperatures tomorrow are again expected to reach into the lower
70s and min RHs around 35 to 30 percent. The big question is how
far east will the precipitation make it tomorrow with downslope
flow fighting increased frontogenesis over the Central Interior on
Monday as the cold front surges east. Expect mainly dry conditions
tomorrow from Manley Hot Springs east with wet conditions west of
Manley Hot Springs on Monday. Rain chances do increase over all
of the Interior Monday night as the front surges east, but we
expect minimal wetting rains from Fairbanks eastward.

Rivers remain at elevated levels this weekend, but the decreasing
trend continues for rivers feeding into the Tanana river,
