Pole to the eastern Arctic Coast will remain in place through 
Sunday. A 1008 mb low is 75 NM NW of Wrangel Island with a front 
stretching southeast through the Chukchi Sea to the Bering Strait.
The low will weaken through Sunday while the front moves to the 
Chukchi Coast.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...Near Red Flag conditions continue in the Interior with
partly cloudy skies and only slight chances of thunderstorms in
the Eastern Alaska Range and Upper Tanana Valley. Mostly cloudy to
cloudy with areas of fog along the eastern coastal areas in the
Arctic, but some clearing from Utqiagvik west as flow turns
offshore. The Arctic Plain and Brooks Range will be partly cloudy
with a slight chance of showers. Little change expected along the
West Coast and Western Interior with some fog along the coast and
partly cloudy warm and dry inland. No significant change in
temperatures expected through the weekend.

.DISCUSSION...
Models...The 03/00z model suite initialized well against the
surface analysis as well as the upper air observations. The 03/00z
model suite also verified well against the 03/06z surface
analysis. Model spread as far as feature location and strength is
minimal through the weekend and into early next week. Run to run
continuity has also been strong. There are subtle differences
between models as far as stability that will impact thunderstorm
potential especially to the south of Fairbanks along the periphery
of the persistent ridge over the Interior.

Aloft at 500 hpa...Ridging continues over the Central and Eastern
Interior with upper level lows to the Northeast, Northwest,
Southwest and Southeast of Mainland Alaska. Subtle details on the
weakening and movement of the Ridge will impact where
thunderstorms will develop over the next several days with areas
south of Fairbanks the most likely to see very isolated high based
thunderstorms. The upper level ridge begins to break down some on
Sunday night which will allow series of easterly waves to push
northwest into the Southeast Interior Sunday night and Monday. A
second easterly wave will push into the area again on Tuesday
afternoon and evening that will bring a better chance of
thunderstorms to the Eastern and Central Interior.

Surface...High pressure continues to dominate Northern Alaska with
mostly clear, dry and above normal temperatures. The ridge is
expected to continue into Saturday before a series of easterly
waves push into the Interior from the Southeast on Sunday
afternoon and evening and again on Tuesday of next week. Very
isolated high based thunderstorms are possible along the thermal
trough which currently lies sough of Fairbanks and north of the
Alaska Range both this afternoon and evening and again on Saturday
afternoon and evening. High pressure north of the North Slope will
produce onshore wind flow bringing low ceilings and fog for areas
along the coast to the East of Point Barrow today and into
Saturday while areas to the west of Point Barrow will experience
off shore flow with improving ceilings and diminished areas of
fog.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...High pressure building south over
the area will produce off shore flow from Utqiagvik west with
improving conditions as far as low ceilings and fog. East of
Utqiagvik expect northeast and easterly winds which will bring low
ceilings and fog to the coastal areas. Highs today will be in the
30s along the coast to the upper 50s along the Brooks Range. Lows
tonight will be in the mid 20s to upper 30s.

West Coast and Western Interior...Expect partly cloudy to mostly
cloudy with light and variable winds. High temperatures today will
range from around 40 on the Chukchi Sea coast and St Lawrence
Island to the mid 70s inland. Lows temperatures tonight will
range from around 30 on the Chukchi Sea Coast to around 50 inland.

Central and Eastern Interior...Partly cloudy today with increasing
chance of thunderstorms in the Alaska Range and southern Interior
the next coupled days, but generally quiet elsewhere. Expect light
and variable winds today for most locations with northeast winds 5
to 10 mph with gusts to 20 mph developing on Saturday mainly
north of Yukon River. Expect high temperatures today in the 60s
to near 80 with low temperatures tonight dropping into the 40s.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.FIRE WEATHER...Near Red Flag conditions through the weekend as
the Interior will remain warm and dry. Thermal trough will remain
south of Fairbanks along the north slopes of the Alaska Range.
High temperatures in the 70s with Relative Humidity values in the
teens and 20s for much of the area. Isolated thunderstorms are
possible in the Upper Tanana Valley and the Eastern Alaska Range
this afternoon and evening, spreading to the west this weekend in
the Alaska Range. Winds north to 10 mph becoming northeast 5 to
15 mph. Gusts around 20 mph north of Yukon River Saturday.
