...Significant Lightning Over Eastern Interior today, Sunday and
Monday...

.Hot, dry and smokey conditions over the Interior will persist
into Monday with isolated to scattered thunderstorms in the
afternoon/evenings. Moisture will increase from the south over
the next several days and cause thunderstorms to increase in
number and coverage this afternoon and evening as well as Sunday
and Monday afternoon and evening. Thunderstorms are expected to
go through the night again tonight and Sunday night. Expect 2000-
3000 lightning strokes today, and 5000-10,000 strokes Sun and
Mon. Thunderstorms will be high based in the 6000 to 8000 feet
range and will not produce much rain this afternoon and evening.
Thunderstorms will be lower based and produce more rain on Sunday
afternoon and evening. Red Flag Warnings may need to be extended
into Monday with slow moving area of instability.

RH Min will be in the 20-30 percent range across the Eastern
Interior this afternoon and evening, while the Central Interior
minimum relative humidity will drop into the lower 30s.

...Significant Lightning Over Eastern Interior Today And Monday...

.Red Flag Warnings for abundant lightning and extremely dry fuels remain
in effect through midnight tonight for zones 218, 219, 220, 221, 222, 
223, and 224. The Red Flag Warnings may need to be extended
through Monday night. 

A thermal low pressure trough stretching from Northway to Bettles
will remain through Mon then move east to Northway to Arctic Village 
on Tue. This will cause very warm and moderately dry conditions, along 
with smoke, to continue over the Interior through Mon, with slight 
cooling on Tue. This trough will cause isolated thunderstorms through 
Tue, with scattered PM thunderstorms along with gusty winds, small hail, 
and frequent lightning along and northeast of this trough through Mon. 
For Tue expect isolated thunderstorms over the Eastern Interior 
with scattered thunderstorms in the PM east of Arctic Village to Denali. 
Expect 5000 to 10,000 lightning strokes over Northern Alaska today 
and Mon with the greatest density of lightning over the Eastern Interior. 
On Tue most of the lighting will be southeast of Denali to Arctic Village. 

Min RH should be 25-35% across the Eastern Interior today, then
increase Mon through Tue. The Eastern Interior should remain warmer 
than normal and relatively dry from Wed through the end of the week.

...Significant Lightning Over Eastern Interior Through Monday Night...

.Red Flag Warnings for abundant lightning and extremely dry fuels
is in effect through Midnight Monday night for zones 218, 219, 220, 
221, 222, 223, 224, 225 and 226. The Red Flag Warnings may need to 
be extended through Tuesday night.

A thermal low pressure trough stretching from Northway to Bettles
will remain through Monday then move east to Northway to Arctic
Village on Tue. This will cause very warm and moderately dry
conditions, along with smoke, to continue over the Interior
through Monday, with slight cooling on Tuesday. Expect scattered
high based thunderstorms with poor rain production, gusty winds,
hail, and abundant lightning through early Monday morning, 
and again Monday afternoon and evening. Over 9000 lightning strokes
occurred over Northern Alaska Sunday, and Monday is expected
to be similar, with the greatest density of lightning over the 
Eastern Interior.

Min RH should be 28-38% across the Eastern Interior Monday, then
increase Tue. The Eastern Interior should remain warmer than normal 
and relatively dry from Wed through the end of
the week.

...Significant Lightning Over Eastern Interior Through Tuesday
Night...

Red Flag Warnings for abundant lightning and extremely dry fuels 
are in effect for zones 218, 219, 220, 221, 222, 223, 224, 225 and
226 this afternoon and evening. Additionally zones 220, 221, 222,
223, 224, 225 and 226 have been extended through Midnight 
Tuesday. Thunderstorm activity is still expected Tuesday afternoon
and evening in zones 218 and 219, however lighting levels are not
expected to reach Red Flag Warning criteria in those zones. 
Another short wave will move over the area on Wednesday and 
combined with fuel conditions that are expected to remain 
extremely dry, the Red Flag Warnings may need to be extended into 
Wednesday evening as well.

Thunderstorm activity is expected this afternoon and evening with
scattered thunderstorms, along with frequent lightning, hail and
gusty winds, over most of the Eastern and Central Interior. Expect
lightning stroke counts to reach 5000 to 10,000 today with thunderstorm
activity again going through the night. Expect another 5000 to 10000
lighting strokes on Tuesday in the Eastern Interior.

A thermal low pressure trough that extends from Northway to 
Anaktuvuk Pass will move to Northway to Arctic Village this 
afternoon and remain there through Wednesday, before spreading 
slowly west on Thursday. This trough combined with a warm and 
unstable airmass will cause isolated thunderstorms to continue 
over the Eastern Interior through Thursday. Areas south of Ft 
Yukon can expect scattered thunderstorms with gusty winds, hail, 
and frequent lightning in the afternoon and evening today and 
Wednesday. Expect 3000-5000 lightning strokes today with most of 
them from Ft Yukon south to the Alaska Range. Wednesday should see
similar conditions. 

Min RH should be 25-40% across the Eastern Interior today, with 
the driest conditions along the Alaska Highway. The Eastern Interior 
should remain warmer than normal and relatively dry from Wednesday 
through the end of the week.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Hot, dry and smokey conditions over the Interior and North Slope
will persist into Mon with isolated to scattered thunderstorms in
the afternoon/evenings. Moisture will increase from the south over
the next several days and cause thunderstorms to increase in
number and expand to the north and west through Sunday, and remain
over most of the Interior and North Slope Sunday into Mon. Expect
2000-3000 lightning strokes today, and 5000-10,000 strokes Sun
and Mon. The greatest density of thunderstorms and lightning will
be between Northway to Bettles today, and from Eagle to Tanana to
Anaktuvuk Pass on Sun and Mon. This areas will likely see gusty
winds and small hail as well. Thunderstorms will be mainly dry
today, with 15-40% chance of rain hitting the ground on Sun and
Mon.

The West Coast will be wet and warm with areas of fog today, then
slightly drier Sun and Mon. Winds will be generally from the south
5-15 mph.

The Arctic Coast will have period of fog from Utqiagvik east
through Mon.

The Eastern Interior and Eastern North Slope will remain hot
through late next week with isolated to scattered thunderstorms,
while the West Coast, Western North Slope, and far Western
Interior become wetter and cool to near normal next week.

Aloft...
The long wave pattern consists of a strong ridge over NW Canada
and Eastern Alaska and a deep trough over the Bering Sea. This
pattern persists into early next week, then becomes progressive
from the middle to end of next week with the trough moving over
Western Alaska by late next week.

Several weak short waves are moving their way around the ridge.
On short wave now lies over the Eastern Interior and will move NW
today. This has kept some thunderstorms going through the night
into this morning.

A second trough will move north over the SE Interior on Sun and
cause more enhancement of the thunderstorms.

Surface...
A 1002 mb low 200 NM southwest of Wrangel Island will move to 100
NM west of Wrangel Island as a 1008 mb low by 4am Sun, and to 300
NM north of Wrangel Is as a 1010 mb low by 4am Mon. A weather
front that lies from this low to along the West Coast of Alaska
will slowly weaken through Mon. This is causing rain and fog with
south winds 5 to 15 mph along the West Coast. The rain will taper
off through Sun as the front weakens. This will also add
additional moisture into the Interior Sun and Mon.

A thermal low pressure trough from Northway to Bettles to Wainwright
will remain in place through Sun, and move to Eagle to Wainwright
on Mon. This will be the focus for thunderstorms.

.DISCUSSION...
At 00Z, models all initialize 20 to 30 meters too low on the 500
MB high over the Northern Yukon and NW Territory. Otherwise models
initialize well aloft. Models show similar solutions aloft
through Mon, with differences with short wave strength and
location developing Tue, with differences increasing through next
week. Will use a blend of models for features aloft including
temperatures and clouds.

Model precipitation locations and amounts are relatively similar
with the areal coverage and amounts of the Interior increasing
through Sun, while the West Coast decreases through Sun. Will see
the West Coast have increasing pops on Mon. Will use a blend of
models for precip areal coverage and amounts through Mon.

For convection, NAM and GFS models indicate isolated to scattered
thunderstorms over the Interior and North Slope north and east of
Ruby today, with the scattered area along a Northway to Bettles
line. For Sun, expect isolated to scattered thunderstorms north
and east of Anvik with the scattered thunderstorms from Anaktuvuk
to Tanana to Eagle. Sun should see significantly more lightning
than Sat. Mon should be similar to Sun for Thunderstorms.

At the surface at 06z, models verify well. Models show similar
solutions through Mon. Will use a blend of model solutions for
surface features and winds through Mon.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Hot, dry and smokey conditions over the Interior will persist

Interior today, while the Western Interior is 30-45%. Min RH will
increase slightly Sun and Mon.

.HYDROLOGY...
Glacial rivers draining the Alaska Range such as the Tanana,
Chisana and Nabesna Rivers will run high and near bankfull due to
the high freezing levels for the next week. On the North Slope,
Judy and Fish Creek west of Nuiqsut have an increased risk of
flooding, and see the current Special Weather Statement for full
details. No other hydro concerns other than the possibility of
very small scale localized flooding under thunderstorms Sun and
Mon.

...FLOODING FROM LAKE DRAINAGE NEAR NUIQSUT...

A lake 23 miles west of Nuiqsut is expected to drain rapidly into
Judy Creek and Fish Creek sometime in the next two weeks,
impacting camps downstream.

Water levels are expect to rise 2 to 6 feet over a 12 to 24 hour
period once it releases.

The lake is 31 river miles upstream from the Fish Creek and
Ublutoch River confluence.
