Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
The benign weather pattern over Northern Alaska the past several
days will continue today but will begin to transition to a more
active pattern with strong winds devloping through the Alaska
Range late tonight and into Thursday. A series of storms over the
weekend and into early next week will impact the West Coast with
increased chances of rain as well as gusty winds. The North Slope
will continue with low ceilings and fog.

.DISCUSSION...
Upper Levels and Analysis...
The current pattern at 500 hpa consists of a deep longwave trough
that extends south from the high Arctic south through the Bering
Strait into the Southern Bering Sea and into the Northern Pacific.
This trough is anchored by a 534 decameter (dam) low currently near
the Pribilof Islands and a secondary low near the pole. Over the
next several days, the the trough over the Bering amplifies and
deepens through Friday with slow movement eastward while strong
southerly flow and ridging builds over the Eastern Interior.
Upstream of the trough that sits over the Bering, ridging that
noses north across the Kamchatka Peninsula into Siberia today will
rapidly weaken Thursday while a secondary trough pushes east out
of Siberia and the Kamchatka Peninsula into the Western Bering Sea
on Friday.

At the surface, a 1002 mb low near Sand Point will strengthen as
it moves north and east into Bristol Bay as a 1000 mb low on
Thursday. A strong front wrapping around the low will push north
over the Alaska Range Thursday, expect strong winds to develop
through and near Alaska Range Passes where a High Wind Watch is
now in effect. Expect drying chinook flow north of the Alaska
Range, and periods of rain across the West Coast and Western
Interior.

A 1026 mb high pressure system over the western Bering Sea will
retreat south as a 968 mb low, the remnants of Typhoon Hinnamnor
in the northernmost Sea of Okhotsk weakens rapidly and then
reemerges over the Western Bering Sea on Friday and pushes east
into the Central Bering Sea on Saturday as a 988 mb low.
Considerable spread remains from model family to model family as
well as from model run to model run on the position, track and
strength of this system. Will continue to monitor.

Model Discussion...
The 7th/00z model suite initialized well against the 00z surface
analysis as well as the upper air observations. Model
verification was good at 06z against the surface analysis. The
models are in general good agreement on the evolution of features
on the synoptic scale at least in the short term and mid range.
Models begin to diverge in the extended period with the subsequent
track and strength of tropical remnants of Typhoon Hinnamnor
moving into the Bering over the weekend. We made only minor edits
for this mornings forecast package with a continued use of blended
model solutions.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Low ceilings along with areas of coastal fog, some of which
continues to be dense especially to the east of Point Barrow will
continue to be problematic along the Arctic Coast from Utqiagvik
east over the next several days as high pressure builds over the
Beaufort and across the region. Conditions inland, including the
Brooks Range, will generally remain relatively benign through
Thursday. Highs will continue to climb into the 40s along the
coast and lower 50s inland while lows dip into the lower to mid
30s through the short term.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Weakening low pressure moving south and east over the Pribilof
Islands this morning will continue to weaken and rapidly be
absorbed by a low just south of Sand Point that will push north
into Bristol Bay tonight. As this low near Sand Point continues to
push north today, a front wrapping around the low will push into
the West Coast and Western Interior increasing the threat of rain
and winds across the Yukon Delta and the Western Interior Thursday
afternoon. High temperatures through Thursday generally in the
lower to mid 50s while lows bottom out in the lower to mid 40s.

Central and Eastern Interior...Expect plenty of breaks in the
clouds today resulting in a pleasant early fall day. Most areas
will have light winds today, however winds will increase over the
area beginning late tonight and will continue into Friday. A
strong front will approach the Alaska Range from the south late
tonight and into Thursday. Winds are expected to ramp up through
the Alaska Range passes late tonight and into Thursday. Gusty
winds may make it into the Fairbanks Area as well with wind gusts
in town reaching to near 30 mph. See the current Special Weather

Wind Watch Statement for the Alaska Range and Delta Junction
areas. Expect seasonable temperatures across the region with highs
climbing into the upper 50s to lower 60s through Thursday while
lows dip into the 30s to mid 40s.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...
We continue to monitor Bering Sea Storm forecasted track and
strength late this weekend and into early next week.

Extended Forecast for Days 4 through 7...
For the extended period that begins on Saturday, attention will
shift to the remnants of Typhoon Hinnamnor that moves into the
Bering over the weekend. The track and strength of this storm will
be closely monitored as it moves through the Bering Sea and
possibly into the West Coast by early next week, stay tuned...
