Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Windy conditions will be the main focus for hazardous weather over
the next couple of days across northern Alaska. Blizzard
conditions are ongoing along the Western Arctic Coast and is
expected to spread eastward across the Chukchi and Beaufort Sea
Coasts today. Strong easterly winds will develop in the Interior
today with blowing snow issues along highway summits through
tomorrow morning. Finally, a strong low moving along the West
Coast will cause strong southerly winds to develop tonight and
last into tomorrow.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
The upper level pattern continues to feature ridging across the
central and eastern portions of mainland Alaska, and a deep
longwave trough encompassing the Bering Sea and portions of the
West Coast. A strong shortwave in the northern Pacific will move
north into Bristol Bay today before retrograding into a closed low
in the central Bering Sea by tonight. This feature will continue
to allow the longwave trough to persist in the Bering Sea, while
also causing the ridge to slowly retreat east into Canada by early
next week.

General southerly flow aloft will keep temperatures across the
forecast area above normal, especially south of the Brooks Range.
The current chinook pattern is keeping strong southerly winds
through the Alaska Range passes today, with chances for mixed
precipitation continuing out west. A strong surface low will move
through Bristol Bay and into the Bering Sea in conjunction with
the strong shortwave trough aloft, resulting in strong winds
developing across the forecast area. East winds on the North Slope
will result in blizzard conditions through tomorrow. East winds
developing in the Interior will cause blowing snow issues along
highway summits today and into tomorrow afternoon. Along the West
Coast, strong east to southeast winds will blow through Norton
Sound, with snow and blowing snow issues for St. Lawrence Island
tonight and lasting through tomorrow night.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Alaska Range winds continue to blow in the 55 to 65 mph range at
times, with these conditions continuing through tonight before
tapering off tomorrow. As Alaska Range winds decrease, easterly
flow will strengthen across the Interior with winds gusting 35 to
45 mph, resulting in blowing snow issues along highway summits
today through tomorrow morning. Another warm day today in the low
to mid 30s before a gradual cool down into the low to mid 20s for
highs going through the weekend as the chinook pattern weakens. A
weather front will push north of the Alaska Range tonight,
resulting in likely snow north of Fairbanks, with isolated chances
for light freezing rain in areas through tomorrow. Snowy
conditions possibly persisting for portions of the Eastern
Interior going into Sunday as another weather front pushes into
the Yukon Territories Saturday night.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Strong easterly winds have brought persistent blizzard conditions
for areas of the Western Arctic Coast, with blizzard conditions
spreading east across the rest of the Chukchi Sea Coast today and
then along the Beaufort Sea Coast by this evening. Winds have been
gusting 40 to 50 mph along the Western Arctic Coast, with similar
wind gusts developing as high as 55 mph further east by tonight.
Conditions will slowly improve going through tonight and
eventually into tomorrow afternoon along the Arctic Coast. During
this similar time period, strong southeasterly winds 35 to 45 mph
will develop through Brooks Range passes, with blowing snow issues
expected tonight through tomorrow. Temperatures are steadily
increasing as the winds increase across the North Slope, with
above normal temperatures expected going through the weekend.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Another couple days of well above normal temperatures in the mid
to upper 30s along the West Coast are expected before a cool down
going into next week. Areas along the Yukon Delta and St. Lawrence
Island should expect mixed precipitation over the next couple of
days. Strong east to southeast winds will develop tonight along
the West Coast as a strong surface low tracks from Bristol Bay
northwest to west of St. Lawrence Island by tomorrow night. Areas
through Norton Sound should expect maximum wind gusts 40 to 50
mph, with 55 mph gusts for St. Lawrence Island. Due to the strong
winds and falling snow potential, a Winter Weather Advisory is in
effect for St. Lawrence Island from tonight through tomorrow
night. Conditions will improve along the West Coast going into
Sunday, with high temperatures in the 20s.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended Forecast Days 4 to 7...
General model consensus would indicate a continued warm and
mostly dry pattern across northern Alaska going into the middle of
next week. Model details regarding features have a lot of
divergence at this time beyond Monday, but general southerly flow
aloft will keep the warm pattern in place during the extended
period.
