.SYNOPSIS...Windy and cold, or just cold is the trend through
Thursday. Winds diminishing Friday, with some warming on the
weekend as the upper level pattern changes from ridging to
troughing.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

Models...01/12Z solutions are in good agreement for the short
term, and remain in reasonable agreement through the extended
periods. A pretty dry pattern will continue with the only
precipitation in the Lower Yukon Delta, but not much is
expected. The big challenge will be the strong winds on the West
Coast which are trending stronger than most solutions suggest, so
will be leaning on the Canadian and NAM solutions as they trended
highest over the next few days. Temperatures will be the next
issue as the models continue to try and bring a big diurnal swing
into play, and that is not going to happen as solar radiation
remains low. Will be adjusting high temperatures down in areas
that do not get any significant change in clouds or winds.

Aloft...At 500 hpa...Ridge dominated pattern with the ridge
extending north over the Gulf of Alaska, then northwest to a 547
dam high over the Seward Peninsula, and to a 552 dam high 100
southwest of Wrangel Island. Troughing to the northeast over the
Arctic and northeast mainland as a pair of lows move around over
the Canadian Archipelago. To the southwest a shortwave extending
from the Pribilofs southeast over Kodiak Island is undercutting
the closed high over Siberia as a 498 dam low has moved to 300 nm
south of Adak with trough extending west along 50N. The shortwave
will undercut the high as it moves over the Gulf of Alaska this
evening with the ridging building back over the southwest
mainland. By Wednesday morning ridging will extend northwest over
Kodiak Island, the Bering Strait, and the Chukotsk Peninsula to
the 553 dam closed high 200 nm west of Wrangel Island. Troughing
will be pushing southwest over Old Crow to Koyuk, and northeast
from a 492 dam low over Kodiak over St Matthew Island. A col will
develop over the Lower Yukon Delta, Norton Sound, and the southern
Bering Strait. By Wednesday afternoon ridging will extend
northwest over Cook Inlet to the Lower Yukon Delta to the closed
552 dam low 200 nm west of Wrangel Island. Troughing will lie over
the Upper Yukon Flats to the southern Seward Peninsula, and the
low to the southwest will move over the southwest Bering Sea north
of Amchitka with troughing extending northeast to St Lawrence
Island. The col will be over Norton Sound and the Bering Strait.
And by Thursday afternoon ridging will slide over the Southeast
Panhandle and extend northwest to McGrath then to the closed 545
dam high 300 nm west of Wrangel Island. Another ridge axis will
extend from the 545 dam high east over 70N. Troughing will lie
over the Upper Yukon Flats to Huslia, while troughing over the
Bering Sea will be anchored by 497 dam low southwest of Attu. A
521 dam low will develop along a wave moving around the low over
the North Pacific and move to 200 nm south of Kodiak Island. At
850 hpa...Temperatures will trend a few degrees cooler as the -10C
and -20C isotherms are pushed southwest then warm a few degrees
Thursday night and Friday before cooling below -20C across the
forecast area Sunday through the middle of next week.

Surface...High pressure extends from a 1050 mb high in the Upper
Tanana Valley in the Yukon Territory across the Eastern Brooks
Range and Northwest Arctic Coast to a 1046 mb high 250 northeast
of Wrangel Island. Low pressure lies to the northeast and
southwest with a 1005 mb low over the Canadian Archipelago, and a
1002 mb low just east of Kodiak City. Wednesday morning will see
little movement in the high pressure as it will lie from the Yukon
Territory over the Eastern Brooks Range and Central Arctic Coast
to the 1046 mb high 300 nm northeast of Wrangel Island. The low
near Kodiak City will be 100 nm southwest of Yakutat at 1002 mb,
while a 948 mb low will move out of the North Pacific to Adak as
the pressure gradient over the West Coast tightens. By Thursday
morning the high pressure will remain stationary as the high moves
to 100 nm northwest of Wainwright and a 1040 mb high develops near
Old Crow YT. The low near Adak will move west to 100 nm northwest
of Attu at 957 mb, and a 976 mb low will develop along a trough
swinging around the low and move to100 nm east of the Pribilofs as
the tight pressure gradient remains over the West Coast and
tightens over the Central and Western Interior.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Pretty quiet with some clouds
moving around the area, but mainly clear skies next couple days.
From Utqiagvik west winds north to east at 5 to 15 mph, while to
the east winds will be southwest to west at 5 to 15 mph. Wind
chill near 50 below will continue. Temperatures will remain cool.
Lows tonight will range from the single digits below west of Point
Lay to the 30s below in the Plains and on the Eastern Arctic
Coast. Highs Wednesday range from around zero west of Point Lay to
the teens and 20s below for the remainder of the area.

West Coast and Western Interior...Windy is the word for the week.
Strong winds will continue with winds increasing through Thursday
along the coast from the Bering Strait south. Blowing and drifting
snow will be an issue locally, but no falling snow is expected
north of the Lower Yukon Delta, so poor visibility conditions are
not expected to be widespread. Some light snow is possible in the
Lower Yukon Delta, so visibility may be impacted at times. Winds
from the Bering Strait south along the coast will be east at
15 to 30 mph gusting to 50 mph increasing to 20 to 35 mph gusting
near 60 mph Wednesday night and Thursday, then diminish Friday.
North of the strait and inland winds will be east at 5 to 15 mph
and locally 10 to 20 mph and gusty. Temperatures along the coast
south of the Bering Strait will be warmer, but wind chill will
still be in the 30s below. Lows tonight along coast south of the
Bering Strait will be in the Single digits above, while north of
the Bering Strait they will range from around zero at Point Hope
to the teens below. Inland low will fall in the teens to 30s below
with the coldest temperatures in the Middle Yukon Valley. Highs
Wednesday will range from the single digits about on the southwest
coast and St Lawrence Island to the teens below in the Middle
Yukon Valley.

Central and Eastern Interior...Generally clear and cold with some
high clouds pushing over the Alaska Range and Southeastern
Interior. Winds generally light and variable in the valleys, while
winds on the hills have already started to pick up from the
northeast and will increase to 10 to 20 mph gusting to 35 mph.
Locally drainage winds will bring some warmer temperatures to
valley locations between Fairbanks and Eielson AFB. Low
temperatures tonight will range from the 20s to 40s below, while
highs on Wednesday will range from around 10 below to 25 below.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...Will transition from a ridge
aloft dominated pattern to a trough aloft dominated pattern, but
will not see a lot of change in the temperatures at the surface
north of the Alaska Range. During the transition temperatures will
rise some, with the warmest day being Saturday, but will fall
well below normal to start next week with lows in the 30s below.
As the trough sets up there will be increased potential for clouds
and snow southeast of the trough and at the moment that means in
the Upper Tanana Valley.
