Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...A mixed bag of weather across the forecast area
today. Light snow has already begun around Fairbanks with up to
one inch of snow in town and 2-3 inches of snow from Eielson to
Delta Junction. Isolated snow showers will be around along the
west coast with a band of steadier snow moving through Kotzebue
this afternoon and into the Baird Mountains this evening. Light
snow or flurries in the Arctic with less than one inch of
accumulation. Some clearing will occur this afternoon and evening
for the Norton Sound region and between the ranges as the snow
moves off to the east. Gusty winds will develop near the Brooks
and Alaska Range Passes on Friday.

.DISCUSSION...

Aloft...
Broad troughing remains over much of the state as a 510 dam low
moves into the Bering Strait from Eastern Russia and a 527 dam low
pushes into the northeastern Gulf of Alaska. This low is providing
the Central and Eastern Interior with light snow throughout the
day as it gradually moves east towards Juneau's forecast area.
Additionally, there is weak ridging moving through Southeast
Alaska which will be traversing east and drying out the Interior
overnight. This transiest pattern will continue through Saturday
morning but we will see a pattern change with troughing located
over the west coast and broad ridging over the remainder of the
state through the weekend. Strong southerly flow will be the
predominant upper level feature with mild 850 temperatures around
-1C to -5C in the Central and Eastern Interior with numerous
 shortwaves bringing chances for snow through early next week.
 Seasonably chilly weather along the West Coast and North Slope
 will persist through early next week.

Surface...
A 1004 mb low near St. Lawrence Island is bringing snow to the
island but will be moving northeast through the Bering Strait and
into the Southern Chukchi Sea by this evening. Along with it will
be a band of snow which will move through the Seward Peninsula
later today and into the Western Brooks Range by this evening. A
1000 mb low over the Northwest Arctic coast will continue moving
northeast along the coast with snow showers expected from
Utqiagvik west through tonight. Otherwise a 1001 mb low in the
Gulf of Alaska is providing some moisture to the Western and
Central Interior with widespread light snow which will be ending
through this evening and tonight from Fairbanks north and east.
Heading into the weekend, mild temperatures persist in the
Interior with light snow expected in the Western Interior from a
front associated with a weakening low moving over the southern
Alaska Peninsula and into the Gulf of Alaska. Despite a few
isolated snow showers, much of the Central and Eastern Interior
looks to be chinooked with southerly flow through Sunday Morning.
The next chance for any light snow accumulations in the Central
and Eastern Interior will come Sunday Night and into Monday as
this front slowly progresses east, though there is still some
uncertainty about how much dry air remains in the area.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A 1001 mb low over the Northwest Arctic Coast is bringing snow
showers with less than one inch of accumulation expected from
Utqiagvik west. Light snow accumulations are anticipated along
the Northwestern Arctic Coast with mainly less than 1 inch for
most of the area. Areas of snow showers will continue to be the
predominant weather along the Northwestern Arctic Coast through
the middle of next week, but significant accumulations are not
anticipated. Along the Eastern Arctic Coast, tranquil and quiet
weather overall is expected through the middle of next week. It
will be mild across the entire North Slope today and tomorrow, but
cooler, more seasonable weather is expected to move in on Sunday.
Other than typical fog and clouds, there is nothing out of the
ordinary that we expect across the area.

West Coast and Western Interior...
We currently have a weak 1001 mb low moving through the Bering
Strait providing some snow showers to the Seward Peninsula. Later
this afternoon and evening, this low will move into the Southern
Chukchi Sea accompanied by snow along the Chukchi Sea Coast and
into the Baird Mountains tonight through tomorrow afternoon.
From Cape Lisburne to Cape Krusenstern, areas of steady snow can
bring 1 to 3 inches of accumulation through Friday Afternoon with
lesser amounts around an inch or less towards Kotzebue and in the
Seward Peninsula. Heavier accumulations, up to 5 inches are
expected in the Baird Mountains tonight through Friday Evening.
South of the Seward Peninsula, we will have some clouds around
today and tomorrow, but more active weather looks to move in
Friday evening in the Yukon Delta as light snow arrives. This will
spread northeast into the Western Interior through the day on
Saturday and Persist from Hooper Bay through the Brooks Range.
Snow is expected to continue through Sunday Night, especially from
Holy Cross northeastward. Overall, this will be light snow
falling, but given the long duration nature of this event, snow
totals will pile up. Snow accumulations through Sunday Night may
be as high as 10 inches in spots from Holy Cross to Grayling and
as much as 8 inches from Kaltag through Huslia. Amounts around 1
inch or less can be expected near Unalakleet and southwest
through Mountain Village. Otherwise, next week looks to quiet down
and warm up a bit as we move high pressure into the area.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Light snow will continue this afternoon but lessen in coverage
gradually from Manley Hot Springs eastward as high pressure moves
in. Additional snow totals around 1 inch or less is expected in
Fairbanks with nearly 2 inches or less expected from Eielson to
Delta. In the Eastern Interior from Fort Yukon south, an
additional inch can be expected from this light snow event.
Tomorrow and through the weekend, high pressure will be dominant
over the area with mild temperatures expected over much of the
Interior. High temperatures in the Lower Tanana Valley will
approach 30 degrees this weekend while widespread upper teens to
low 20s expected elsewhere. Windy conditions will develop in the
Eastern Alaska Range around Isabel Pass and into Delta Junction
Friday Morning and persist through Sunday Morning with peak gusts
around 55 mph. Otherwise, other than some isolated snow showers
and flurries, the next round of snow looks to arrive in the
Central Interior Sunday Night and into Monday as a front pushes
east. It is uncertain how much dry air will remain in place
across the interior but a couple inches of snow is not entirely
out of the question as this front moves through. Then moving
through next week, there is much more uncertainty but a high
pressure will develop and may bring cooler air and drier weather
through the end of the week.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...
Models begin to differentiate quite a bit on Monday with the
placement of a low in Southwest Alaska which would help determine
how the placement of snow in the Interior as it moves eastward.
Further out in time, a stronger front looks to approach the West
Coast Tuesday into Wednesday and this can bring some snow and strong
winds from the Bering Sea through the Chukchi Sea. This low is
taken along or just north of the North Slope through the end of
the week with more active weather expected. Cooler weather may
move in, especially during the middle and end of the week as a
high pressure looks to develop over the Bering and bring Northerly
flow into the state.
