* WHAT...Blizzard conditions ongoing. Travel will be very 
  difficult to impossible.

* WHERE...Along summits of the Steese Highway.

* WHEN...Until 3 PM today.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Winds gusting as high as 40 mph will cause
  whiteout conditions in blowing snow. Significant drifting of 
  the snow is likely. Cold wind chills as low as 50 below zero 
  will cause frostbite in as little as 10 minutes to exposed skin.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Blizzard Warning means severe winter weather conditions are
expected or occurring. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds
and poor visibilities are likely. This will lead to whiteout
conditions, making travel extremely difficult. The latest road
conditions can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Wind chill temperatures across the North Slope and winter weather
advisories along the Chukchi Sea coast and St Lawrence Island are
the main concerns today. Snow and blowing snow continues across
the Eastern Alaska Range through early evening. Otherwise expect
only 1 to 2 inches of light snow across the Interior today and
tonight. Relatively quiet weather beyond except for some blowing
snow potential due to increased winds along highway summits in the
Interior on Thursday.

.DISCUSSION...
Models are generally in good agreement within the short term in
moving the low pressure trough that is currently over the Hooper
Bay area and extending into the Arctic north of Utqiagvik will
gradually shift towards Huslia by Thursday morning. This will
diminish the southerly flow over the Alaskan Range. By Thursday
evening the upper level low is located over Arctic Village and the
general flow across Interior becomes more zonal. The low then
continues into Canada by Friday morning. At a pressure gradient
tightens along the highway Summits on Thursday and Thursday night
which could lead to blowing snow and reduced visibilities. High
pressure then builds over the North Slope.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Snow will continue to spread across the Interior today and tonight
with general amounts of 1 to 2 inches. Expect snow totals of 5 to
8 inches of snow through today. Then another 3 to 6 inches
expected tonight through Thursday morning. Expect a cooling trend
through the end of the week with low temperatures dropping into
the 20s to 30s below zero across the Interior by Thursday night.

North Slope and Arctic Coast...
Extreme cold temperatures remain across the North Slope with
temperatures in the 40s to 50s below zero. Wind chills 60 to 75
below zero will remain across areas along the Arctic Coast. The
winds have relaxed across the Brooks Range. Easterly winds along
the Arctic Coast will diminish and then westerly winds will
increase along the Beaufort Sea Coast on Thursday. Expect another
potential of blowing snow as stronger west winds develop through
Friday morning. Conditions are expected to warm over the next
several days as southerly flow pushes out the bitter Arctic air
mass.

West Coast and Western Interior...
A weather front moving north across Norton Sound and the Western
Interior which will bring snow across the area. Expect wind chill
temperatures of 50 to 55 below zero along the West Coast. Expect
the northerly flow along the west coast to persist into Thursday.
Temperatures will remain well below normal as the cold Arctic
trough remains over the area through Thursday.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended Forecast Days 4 to 7...
Another Arctic trough on Saturday will be the dominant feature at
the beginning of the extended period. Still model differences in
intensity of this trough setting up over northern Alaska and how
it will impact the the area. Could potentially be warmer and
wetter which would be interesting potential as this would be a
more impactful for Northern Alaska middle of next week depending
on the track of the surface low with snow. However, there is still
uncertainly and could see the colder and dry conditions which
would bring quiet weather pattern. Will continue to monitor
situation.
