.SYNOPSIS...Strong winds aloft and at the surface have pushed warm
air well north into the Interior with temperatures peaking in the
30s to 40s already this morning. High Wind Warnings remain in
effect for areas near the Alaska Range passes. The warm
temperatures are also bringing some light rain to the Alaska Range
passes at times. Winds will be diminishing slowly so many areas
have already had their high temperature for the day and
temperatures will be trending down the remainder of the day and
overnight tonight. Snow is piling up on the West Coast with 2 to
10 more inches possible and Winter Weather Advisories are in
effect. The Arctic will see some snow on the Northwest Coast
today, then winds pick up from the west as low pressure moves
offshore and a Winter Storm Watch has been issued for potential
Blizzard conditions east of Deadhorse Tuesday along with a Winter
Weather Advisory for blowing snow and poor visibility around
Deadhorse.

.DISCUSSION...

Models...24/00Z solutions in generally good agreement with the
short term, they are struggling with the details as short waves
move through the flow across the forecast area. They show broad
general agreement in the midrange and extended periods as ridging
builds to the west of the state. Solutions are handling the strong
winds aloft well with the strongest winds early this morning, and
then slowly diminishing through the day. Forecast temperatures
will be a huge challenge as we try to determine just how far
north the warm air will surge. Expect the warmest temperatures
this morning, then steady to slowly falling through the day and
tonight. Fairbanks will be in the rain shadow and solutions are
handling that well. To the west solutions are bringing a mix of
precipitation to the Lower Yukon Delta this morning, then changing
over to all snow as cold air wraps around the upper level low.
Will be leaning on a blend of the solutions for the short term
with the high temperature for most areas this morning and trending
down through the day. For winds will lean a bit more toward the
GFS as it appears to be handling the winds near the Alaska Range
better.

Aloft...At 500 hpa...Ridging over the eastern half of the state
that extends north from a 582 dam high over the Oregon Coast over
Yakutat to Demarcation Point and north. Troughing to the west with
a 492 dam low over the Dateline 200 nm south of Wrangel Island,
and a 518 dam low 100 nm south of Unalaska. Several shortwaves are
caught in the flow moving north over the western half of the
state. Ridging will slowly slide east as shortwaves move north up
the western flank of the ridge to the Arctic and the low south of
Wrangel Island moves to 200 nm north of Wrangel Island this
afternoon. The low near Unalaska will weaken and eventually merge
with the low to the north. As the ridge slides east over 130W flow
over the state will turn more from the southwest with the
multiple shortwaves moving over the state. Longwave trough to the
west will move over 170W by Tuesday morning, and over the West
Coast and Bristol Bay by Tuesday afternoon as flow turns more from
the west as the ridging to the east breaks down. The longwave
trough will move over the Western Interior by Wednesday morning,
then across the Central and Eastern Interior by Wednesday evening.
A second trough will develop over the Western Interior by
Wednesday afternoon and move to the Eastern Interior by Friday
morning as the low over the Arctic slowly moves east along 78N. At
850 hpa...A few bubbles of warm air around 0C will move northeast
across the state today, with a cooling trend by afternoon. -10C
isotherm will move over the West Coast by late this afternoon as
cold air wraps around the upper level low, and by Tuesday morning
the -10C isotherm will lie from Utqiagvik to Minchumina as cold
air pours in from the west. By Tuesday afternoon it will be near
the AlCan Border as the -20C isotherm digs southeast to lie from
Utqiagvik to Bettles, then southwest to St Matthew Island. By
Wednesday afternoon the -10C isotherm will be south of the Alaska
Range, and the -20C isotherm will lie from Old Crow YT to Bettles
to Little Diomede.

Surface...High pressure to the east is weakening as low pressure
to the west pushes into the area with a 977 mb low near Cape
Newenham moving north to the Lower Yukon Delta at 981 mb this
morning, and Kotzebue Sound at 985 mb this evening. The associated
occluded front is falling apart as it moves into the Interior
today. Leeside troughing north of the ranges is strengthening the
pressure gradient across them with strong gusty south winds
prevailing. Winds will start diminishing later this morning, but
will remain fairly strong through the day. High pressure will
continue to push in over the Upper Yukon Flats as the low moves
into the Arctic Plains tonight while a 983 mb low develops near
Utqiagvik, and a 985 mb low develops near Kaktovik and move
offshore. A 992 mb low will develop near Sand Point later this
morning and move to Talkeetna by Tuesday morning at 1004 mb and
dissipate as a 1010 mb low develops in the Northern Gulf of
Alaska. Weak high pressure will move over the southwest mainland
as a 996 mb low moves east along 60N to Nunivak Island by Tuesday
morning at 1013 mb. By Wednesday morning high pressure will extend
from Siberia over the across the Chukotsk Peninsula to a 1033 mb
high in the Bering Strait, then southeast to a 1030 mb high in the
Upper Tanana Valley as high pressure lies between the ranges
across the state. The low pressure that was in the Arctic will
slide northeast as it lies from a 985 mb low near 80N and the
Dateline southeast to Banks Island.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Snow mainly west of Deadhorse,
with blowing snow to the east. Winds east 10 to 25 mph and gusty
will swing around from the southwest by Tuesday morning. Winds
will increase on east of Deadhorse with potential blizzard
conditions Tuesday so a Winter Storm Watch has been issued. Winter
Weather Advisories are in effect for the Deadhorse area Tuesday,
and for the Eastern Brooks Range passes today and tonight. Highs
today in teens and 20s above, while lows tonight will generally be
in the single digits above.

West Coast and Western Interior...Snow continuing through most of
the day, then ending from the southwest tonight. Some patchy
freezing rain, mainly south of Galena, with trace accumulations.
Another low will move to the Lower Yukon Delta Tuesday evening
with some light snow. Additional snowfall amounts today will be
heaviest along the Nulato Hills, and in the Upper Kobuk north of
Shungnak. Strong winds through the Bering Strait and on Little
Diomede today will diminish overnight. Winds mainly north to
northeast at 15 to 30 mph along the coast, and from the east
inland to 15 mph. Winds will gradually swing around from the
southwest tonight and Tuesday. Highs today range from the teens to
the mid 30s, while lows tonight will be in the single digits
below north of the Seward Peninsula to the lower teens above in
the Lower Yukon Delta.

Central and Eastern Interior...Some light snow, mainly north of
the Yukon River, and from Tanana west today as the remainder of
the area will be in the rain shadow as strong chinook flow
continues across the Alaska Range. Winds near the range gusting
near 80 mph this morning then gradually diminishing through the
day. Gusty winds in the hills around Fairbanks as well, and that
has pulled warmer air north into the Interior. As the winds
diminish the temperatures will be steady or slowly falling through
the day. Most areas will have already seen their high temperature
for the day by mid morning. Strong winds also continue around
Delta Junction and will diminish later this afternoon. The
temperature at Fairbanks surged to 39 above this morning and will
slowly fall through the day. The high temperatures across the area
will range from near 50 above near the Alaska Range to the 20s
above north of the Yukon River. Lows tonight will range from the
single digits about to the lower teens. The cooling trend will
continue into the weekend.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...Ridging will build north over
the Chukchi Sea with troughing over the AlCan Border bringing the
cold back into the Interior as arctic air is pulled south over the
state. Lows will fall into the teens to 30s below, while highs
will be in the teens and 20s below from the Western Interior east.
The ridge will slowly move over the West Coast and Western Arctic
bringing a slight warming trend to the area through the weekend.
