Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

An upper level ridge continues to move across the western
Aleutians and Bering. A low is moving out of northeastern Russia
and towards the northern Bering. A vertically stacked low is
meandering near the Kuskokwim Delta this is producing gusty
northwest winds up to 50 mph across the Pribilofs, eastern Bering
and eastern Aleutians. An occluded front associated with the low
is moving across Southwest Alaska where rain is occurring with
bands of moderate rain across the Kuskokwim Delta. This front
stretches into Southcentral with light rain seen on radar and
observations. There is downsloping occurring across Anchorage and
the MAT valley where occasional showers or sprinkles are occurring
with little to no rain accumulations. Winds are increasing to
gale force across the Gulf especially across the Barren Islands
and Kamishak Gap. Gusty winds of 40 to 45 mph are also evident
across the Bristol Bay region. Finally gusty Turnagain winds
showing gusts up to 45 mph around Portage and the Arm.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Guidance remains in good agreement through day 3. The models are
coming into better agreement with the track and intensity of the
extratropical low from the remnants of Typhoon Kulap in the
Bering Sea Friday into Saturday. The GFS continues to be the
stronger solution with it bottoming out in the 940 mb range while
the other solutions are around the 950 mb range. It is notable
that the EC has trended deeper over earlier model runs since
yesterday. Coastal flooding issues remain low as the consensus
among most deterministic and ensembles take the low across the
western and central Bering and dipping southeast, just west of the
Pribilofs, while weakening into the 960 to 970 mb range. The low
will continue to weaken to around 980 to 990 mb range as it tracks
towards either the AKPEN or Bristol Bay area where there is still
model disagreement on the exact track as it moves east and
southeast. This southerly track will promote east to southeast
off- shore wind flow which helps inhibit coastal flooding. However
there is some concern about the swells that will develop across
the western and central Bering and elevate tide levels. Otherwise
the models in good agreement with the next low that tracks south
across the Bering tomorrow and into the Gulf Friday, this will
enhance winds across the eastern Bering and AKPen and keep rain
going across parts of Southcentral.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions with light winds, low level wind shear is
possible through tonight as winds above the surface will be
southeasterly at 30 to 35 knots. Intermittent light rain possible
through tonight and then becoming more steady by tomorrow
morning, but not expecting any vis or cig below VFR with the rain.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3...Today
through Sat afternoon)...

The unsettled weather pattern looks to continue in the short-term
period with a plethora of precipitation chances, especially for
the eastern Kenai Peninsula and the north Gulf Coast (namely
Prince William Sound). An upper level low over Bristol Bay with a
surface lows in the vicinity of Kodiak Island and Bristol Bay are
responsible for the unsettled weather tonight into Thursday. The
shortwaves and frontal passage associated with this system will
bring the eastern Kenai Peninsula and Prince William Sound
communities the most precipitation, while Anchorage, the Mat-Su
valley, and Copper River Basin communities will see less amounts
due to unfavorable cross-barrier flow/downsloping. Of note, the
strong pressure gradient is favorable for hillsides of Anchorage
and Eagle River to get gusty winds through the early morning
hours, while gap winds through the Knik River Valley will extend
elevated winds into the Mat-Su Valleys. Gusts could be up to 55
mph this evening over higher elevations before the winds diminish
overnight. In Anchorage itself, the low position south of 60N and
lack of a critical layer at the ridge line will keep the winds
out of town. The downsloped areas of the western Kenai Peninsula
north to the Mat-Su Valleys (including Anchorage) looks to have
its best shot at seeing some light rain showers Thursday as
downsloping weakens and multiple shortwaves move overhead.

The upper low looks to move over the Gulf of Alaska by Friday.
This configuration is favorable for the southeastern parts of the
Copper River Basin to see precipitation as shortwaves rotate
overhead from the south and southeast. There looks to be a drying
trend for the Kenai Peninsula and Princes William Sound areas
Friday evening through Saturday morning before the next system
comes up from the southwest for Saturday afternoon.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Tonight
through Saturday afternoon)...

An upper-level low over the Eastern Bering/Kuskokwim Delta Coast
is forecasted drop south to the Alaska Peninsula by Thursday
afternoon before exiting into the Western Gulf on Friday. The
low's attendant front will continue to disintegrate over interior
Southwest while multiple shortwaves rotate around the low. As a
result, expect rain shower activity to continue across much of the
region through Thursday night as the low drops into the Western
Gulf. Broad southwesterly flow and cold air advection along the
backside of the low maintains gale force winds across the Alaska
Peninsula and will support gale development over Bristol Bay
starting Thursday morning. Winds will diminish to below gale force
early Friday morning with the exit of the low. Drier conditions
will unfold on Friday while the next system approaches from the
west.

By Saturday morning, an occluded front extending from a
large Bering low (which is currently Typhoon Kulap) will push
onshore Southwest and weaken through the day as it continues
inland. Rainfall and slightly elevated winds are expected along
the Southwest coast, but the threat of impactful coastal flooding
remains low at this time.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
Tonight through Saturday afternoon)...

An upper-level low currently near Southwest Alaska will linger
there through Thursday before diving south into the Western Gulf.
As a result, southwesterly gale force winds along the backside of
the low (over the Eastern Bering and Aleutians) will persist
through Thursday before diminishing on Friday morning. Any
lingering rain showers along the Eastern Aleutians will also taper
off for Friday morning. A ridge of high pressure over the Western
Bering and Aleutians will continue building to the east behind the
low, yielding clearing skies and drier conditions for much of the
region tonight into Thursday.

Starting on Thursday, a potent storm system, the remnants of
current Typhoon Kulap, is forecasted to enter the Western Bering
and Aleutians. Latest model runs still show the most likely track
taking the low center across the Western Bering/Aleutians from
Thursday afternoon through Friday. The low is then expected to
slowly drift to the Central Bering on Saturday before quickly
diving southeast towards the Alaska Peninsula and Bristol Bay by
Sunday morning. Southeasterly winds are expected to increase
Thursday morning across the Western Aleutians and then shift
southwesterly late Thursday night over the same area. The highest
winds are currently expected near Attu and Shemya early Friday
morning, where hurricane force sustained winds and gusts to 100
mph are possible. Widespread storm force winds are expected to be
around 60 to 80 mph and will blanket much of the western portion
of the forecast domain. Thus, a High Wind Warning will be in
effect from noon Thursday through Friday afternoon for the Western
Aleutians. Once this storm enters the Bering Sea, it is unlikely
that is will take a similar track to that of the recent Typhoon
Merbok remnants. All sustained winds are expected to reach below
storm force starting around Saturday morning as the low weakens
and tracks southeast.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Sunday through Wednesday)...

An area of low pressure that will be former-Typhoon Kulap moves
across western parts of the Alaska Peninsula and then weakens
further as it settles in the Gulf of Alaska on Sunday. As the low
progresses into the the Gulf, additional moisture brings a return
of cool, cloudy, and rainy conditions over Southcentral heading
into early next week. Widespread rain over Kodiak Island will push
northward from the Kenai Peninsula to Prince William Sound.
Isolated to scattered showers are possible further inland, but
will be drier due to downslope easterly flow. Meanwhile, a
transient ridge of high pressure provides a brief break of drier
weather over interior Alaska between Monday and Wednesday. Another
storm system, albeit weaker, crosses the Aleutians with the next
round of wind and rain and then enters the North Pacific midweek.
Unsettled weather continues into Tuesday as the next low and front
moves southeastward from the Kamchatka Peninsula. However, models
diverge significantly in the specific details towards the end of
the period.
