Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A bora wind event is underway across Southwest and Southcentral
alaska this morning, with ferocious northerly to northeast winds
being driven by an extremely tight pressure gradient between a 980
mb low surface low in the southern Gulf and a strong 1045 mb
surface high pressure ridge centered over the northern Bering. The
support for these winds extends well into the upper levels, with a
meridional 140 kt jet streak extending from near the Seward
Peninsula and Bering Strait down across the Alaska Peninsula and
well into the North Pacific. The strongest winds are occurring
where aided by both cold air advection and enhancement through
gaps and passes, including the Copper River Delta, Resurrection
Bay, Thompson Pass, Isabel Pass, and through the Matanuska
Valley. The strongest wind gusts so far have been observed in the
Mat valley between Palmer and the interchange between the Parks
and Glenn Highways, where winds have gusted as high as 82 mph
between the previous afternoon and early this morning. Weaker but
still intense winds are mixing down to the surface at times over
Southwest as well, with gusts to around 60 mph observed earlier for
places including Iliamna, King Salmon and New Stuyahok. A core of
very strong winds remains centered along and just south of the
Alaska Peninsula, with a scatterometer pass earlier on Friday
showing sustained Hurricane force winds along a corridor just
southwest of Kodiak Island, with Hurricane force gusts likely
still ongoing in this vicinity this morning. Temperatures below 0F
nearly everywhere but the immediate coast are combining with the
winds to create bitterly cold wind chills a low as -30 to -45F,
with the lowest wind chills generally occurring with the strongest
winds through gaps and passes. The strong winds are also lofting
snow into the air and locally reducing visibility in places at
times, with the worst conditions reaching blizzard thresholds near
Isabel Pass.

Far out west, sensible conditions are comparatively quiet
underneath the ridge over most of the central Bering and eastern
Aleutians. A stalled out frontal axis continues to send steady
rain and southeast winds near storm force around the western
periphery of the ridge across the far southwest Bering and western
Aleutian Chain.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models are in excellent agreement for all noteworthy synoptic
features over the next few days, with the biggest forecast
challenge pertaining to the smaller scale details with how winds
enhanced by terrain through the various gaps will behave before
they start to diminish during the day on Monday. Winds will also
tend to keep temperatures higher where they keep the boundary
layer mixed and prevent effective radiational cooling, making
forecasting temperatures somewhat difficult as well in the near
term.

.AVIATION...
PANC...Strong northerly winds will persist through this evening.
While there will likely be some fluctuations in the strength of
the wind, the strongest winds look to be during the day today as
the core of winds coming out of the Matanuska Valley tracks
southward down Knik Arm and to the Anchorage terminal. Winds will
slowly begin to come down from tonight through Monday morning as
the core of strong winds begins to weaken and shift west of the
terminal with time.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

Cold air and strong high pressure remain over the Interior of
the state with low pressure just south of the Gulf of Alaska. This
pattern will keep another day of cold temperatures, strong winds
and low wind chills across Southcentral Alaska.

The high winds warnings in the Matanuska Valley and Anchorage have
been extended to 6 AM Monday morning as the pressure gradient
persists (as does the cold air), so there is nothing to really
ease the winds until at least Monday morning. Winds have persisted
in gusting 65 to 80 mph all night from Palmer through the
Glenn/Parks highway interchange. This is unlikely to change
through the evening. Wind chills will remain in the 10 below to 25
below range through the night in Anchorage and the Matanuska
Valley in these strong winds. However, without these winds, the
inversion would develop and bringing the ambient temperatures 10
to 20 degrees colder than they are.

Wind Chill advisories remain for the Copper River Basin, Thompson
Pass, and the Susitna Valley north of Talkeetna. These may improve
slightly today, but are expected to remain in the 35 below to 55
below range again overnight tonight.

There should be slow improvement in conditions Monday with winds
beginning to diminish. It will still be a cold and breezy day
around the area, but should be better than today overall.
Monday night will likely see some low-lying areas have their
winds become calm which will allow them to get quite cold. There
will likely be very large temperature differences especially in
the Copper River Basin due to some areas developing and inversion
and others remaining well-mixed with some winds persisting.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Day 1 through 3: Today
through Tuesday)...

Strong northerly flow aloft continues to persist between an upper
low centered in the western Gulf and an upper ridge over the
western Aleutians. This is leading to clear skies and cold, dry
conditions over all of Southwest Alaska. Gusty northerly winds up
to 50 mph will continue through Monday morning from the Middle
Kuskokwim Valley through central Bristol Bay. As such, wind chills
below -40 will generally persist as well, with advisories remaining
in effect for these areas. Wind directions will veer to the east
late Monday into Tuesday with highest gusts shifting northward to
the Kuskokwim Delta. Temperatures will remain below zero across
much of the region, even during the day.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Day 1 through 3: Today
through Tuesday)...

Very strong northerly winds associated with a tight surface
pressure gradient and strong cold advection will persist south of
the Alaska Peninsula through Monday morning, before shifting
westward Monday afternoon. Benign conditions are expected through
Monday between Unalaska and Adak under a strong upper ridge, while
gusty southerly winds and rain will continue over the far western
Aleutians. An upper low will shift westward and elongate by
Tuesday, bringing chances of rain across the entire Chain.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Monday through Wednesday)...

Bering...Along the southwestern edge of high pressure in the
Bering Strait on Monday, a widespread swath of easterly gales
blows across the central and western Bering/Aleutians before
diminishing Monday night. Seas approach 30 ft accompanying the
strong gales on Monday, but subside to near 20 ft by Tuesday
afternoon. A smaller area of northeasterly gales near the
Kuskokwim Delta and Bristol Bay on Monday shift into the northern
Bering by Tuesday morning and then diminish. Gale force gap winds
south of the Alaska Peninsula also diminish Monday night. Tuesday
afternoon a broad trough with embedded lows over the North Pacific
induces another round of easterly gales from Bristol Bay into the
central Bering through Wednesday. By Wednesday morning, seas begin
to build to 20 ft in the central Bering.

Gulf of Alaska...The strong gap winds expected Saturday and
Sunday begin to diminish by Monday, with localized areas of gales
continuing to linger beyond Monday afternoon, particularly near
Kamishak Bay and Shelikof Strait as low pressure exits into the
North Pacific. A front moves north into the Gulf on Tuesday
afternoon, allowing widespread easterly gales to develop in the
southern Gulf. Gale force winds may also develop through the
Barren Islands and southern Cook Inlet and persist through
Wednesday. Seas build to near 20 ft by Wednesday morning in the
far southern Gulf.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 8: Tuesday through
Friday)...

Tuesday marks the beginning of a pattern shift as there is general
model consensus that a strong amplified upper level ridge sitting
over the Bering this weekend shifts northward into the Chukchi
Sea. A large closed upper low to the east of the ridge, over the
western Gulf of Alaska, begins to pinch off the ridge on Tuesday,
retrograding along its southern periphery into and across the
Bering. Ahead of the low, a blast of cold, Arctic air, previously
sitting over the Alaska mainland, is pushed across the Bering,
creating widespread snow showers and the potential for freezing
spray, especially near the Southwest coast. Various surface lows
look to move northward from the North Pacific and push a broad
front across the southern Gulf, AKPEN, and the Aleutians, leading
to a return of warmer, wetter conditions there by Wednesday. The
bulk of the warm, moist air looks to remain confined there as the
strong ridge to the north keeps the front stalled out, leaving
Southwest and Southcentral Alaska colder and drier. Weak warm
advection on the back side of the upper low nonetheless allows a
bit of a warm-up and lighter winds over the Alaska mainland
through the week.

Both GFS and the EC indicate that by Thursday stronger upper-
level ridging extends further south over mainland Alaska, likely
keeping the area clear and dry. The GEM, despite a further west
placement of the strong upper-level anticyclone, also indicates
the same general northwest to southeast ridge axis, which is more
prone to draw surface lows northward into the Bering. Both GFS and
GEM indicate the potential for a surface low to draw warm, moist
air deeper into the Bering and possibly into Southwest Alaska by
the end of the week. In this setup, temperatures may warm to near
or above freezing across parts of Southwest late Friday.
