.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

Weak flow is present at the upper levels as synoptic scale
features stay mostly on the periphery of Alaska. In the Gulf, a
broad upper level closed low remains mostly stationary. Shortwaves
rotating around it are producing weak mesolows near Kodiak Island
and in the North Pacific Ocean. Another upper level closed low is
present south of the Aleutian Chain, while a trough dips into
Northern Alaska from the Arctic. Over the Bering, high pressure
dominates.

Much of the Southern Mainland is seeing cloudy skies in the wake
of yesterday's thunderstorms (Southwest) and frontal rain
(Southcentral). While radar shows clear air over Southcentral,
rain showers have continued to linger over Southwest Alaska into
the early morning. In the Gulf and over the Bering Sea,
widespread marine stratus has led to lower cloud ceilings and
areas of fog, especially in the Eastern Aleutians and along parts
of the north Gulf coast.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Synoptic scale model agreement is decent in the short-term,
though much of the impactful weather over the next few days will
be governed by smaller scale features. Model agreement on
Wednesday is good, especially as there is consistency in the
trajectories of the smaller mesolows that track just south of the
Alaska Peninsula and Eastern Aleutians. Uncertainty increases
into Thursday as an upper level closed low moves south along the
Alaska Range and into the Southwest. The GFS is the outlier as it
keeps the low near the Western Alaska Range before pushing it
through Kamishak Gap and into the Gulf on Saturday. In contrast,
the other global models take this low further west towards the
Kuskokwim Delta, then across Bristol Bay and into the North
Pacific just south of Kodiak Island. The track and strength of
this upper level low will affect storm coverage and intensity in
Southwest, as well as precipitation amounts in Southcentral. Some
uncertainty also remains with the easterly wave that tracks across
Southcentral on Thursday and Friday, which will primarily impact
the timing of showers.

PANC...VFR conditions and variable light winds will persist.
Turnagain Arm winds return Wednesday evening, but are not expected
to bend into the airport until Thursday afternoon at around 10 kt.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 2:
Today through Thursday night)...

Offshore northerly flow will bring warmer and drier weather today
with the clouds clearing by early afternoon. Temperatures will
warm into the 70s across most valleys today with 60s near coastal
locations. Isolated thunderstorms are looking increasingly likely
during the afternoon and evening hours today, especially over the
Talkeetna, Chugach, and Kenai Mountains. Mid-level steering flow
is expected to be northeasterly, so there's a chance that these
storms may roll off the mountains and into populated areas (Mat-Su
Valleys, Anchorage Bowl, western Kenai Peninsula). Wednesday
night into Thursday morning showers will increase in coverage
across the Mat-Su Valleys and Anchorage as a low pressure system
moves south from the interior. This will allow the flow to become
south to southwest with up inlet flow moistening the atmosphere
and large scale lift from the low allowing showers to form. By
Thursday afternoon an easterly wave will bring showers across the
Copper River Basin and Prince William Sound while the low moving
towards Southwest Alaska will produce showers across the Mat-Su
Valleys, the Kenai Peninsula and Anchorage. Isolated thunderstorms
are looking like a good bet across the Susitna Valley and western
Alaska Range where the best instability will be on Thursday
afternoon and evening. The easterly wave will continue to push
east Thursday night keeping showers going across a good portion of
the area, however Prince William Sound and the Copper River Basin
will begin to dry out heading into Friday morning.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2: Today and
Thursday)...

A little bit of a break in the pattern is expected today in
regards to the thunderstorms. However, the hot and dry conditions
are expected to continue yet again for today and also on Thursday.
Some areas of the Kuskokwim Delta may approach or exceed 80
degrees with areas of the Middle Kuskokwim Valley not far behind
with highs 75 to 80 degrees. Most of Southwest will remain dry
today with just isolated wet thunderstorms expected, mainly
across the Kilbuck/Kuskokwim Mountains and the western Alaska
Range. A very subtle weak upper level shortwave is expected to
move southward which will help to ignite this activity. The core
of the energy with this wave will go mostly east of the Kuskokwim
Mountains and through the Bristol Bay area. As a result, there is
the risk a few storms move into the lower elevations mainly in
Bristol Bay due to the steering flow aloft as well as most of the
upper level energy going through this area. Therefore, places
like Dillingham, New Stuyahok, Koliganek, Igiugig south to King
Salmon might not be completely out of the woods for some activity
late today and this evening. Also, chance PoPs are in the forecast
for areas east of Dillingham to cover for this.

Tonight, any thunderstorm activity diminishes leaving a rather
quiet and mostly clear to partly cloudy sky overnight with
temperatures across much of the area falling into the upper 40s
and low 50s.

Thursday, a more vigorous upper level shortwave moves southward
from the Alaska Interior with the core of the energy aimed at the
western Alaska Range area. The greatest instability is also
expected to be in this area. Due to this, widely scattered wet
thunderstorms are expected especially in the Port Alsworth,
Nondalton areas for Thursday afternoon and evening as well as
areas to the east of King Salmon. Some of these storms may contain
frequent lightning, gusty winds, and small hail. A few isolated
wet thunderstorms are also possible across the Kilbuck/Kuskokwim
Mountains as some weak upper level energy moves over this area.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2: Today and
Thursday)...

Quiet weather continues across much of the Bering and the
Aleutians with widespread low stratus and areas of fog expected
for the next few days. The one area that will escape most of the
low stratus and fog will be the northern Bering near the Saint
Matthew Island area where mostly clear conditions are expected to
continue as a drying northeasterly offshore flow continues. The
aforementioned offshore northeasterly drying flow has weakened
this morning for areas from the Pribilof Islands south, hence, the
return of the marine layer in these areas. Therefore, expecting
the Pribilof Islands and much of the Bering nearby to remain in
fog and low stratus for the next two days. Of course though, fog
and low stratus is always a challenge and things can change
quickly. Also of note, is a weak upper level shortwave currently
over the eastern Bering which is expected to continue moving
westward reaching the central Bering by tonight where it then
meanders in place.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Friday through Sunday)...

Gulf of Alaska: There is a North Pacific low just south of the
Gulf and a low in the Gulf on Friday. The models clearly show 2
different lows in this area but the placement is slightly
different between the models. The models bring a ridge of high
pressure on Saturday over Prince William Sound with the lows south
of Cordova and Yakutat. Sunday one of the lows moves towards
Yakutat and some showers could work their way into Prince William
Sound from this system. A low forms in the Southcentral Gulf for
Friday. Forecast confidence is fair with the timing of the lows.
Seas will be below 10 feet.

Aleutians/Bering: The Western Bering high holds through Saturday.
Forecast confidence is good. Northerly small craft over the
Eastern Bering, diminishing Thursday. Seas less than 10 feet. A
1007 mb low develops in the NW Bering on Sunday afternoon and this
low will slowly move towards the Pribilof Islands.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Saturday through Tuesday)...

The main features driving the pattern in the upper levels for much
of the extended range continue to be two upper level lows, one
stalled out over the Gulf and the other in the general vicinity of
the northern Bering. The models are not, however, in agreement
with actual placement and evolution of the low for Saturday and
Sunday. But the consensus is to expect ridging in place over the
Bering to weaken and increase the potential for isolated showers
across the Aleutians and Pribilofs towards Saturday/Sunday. As a
result, the Bering low is expected to result in a cooling trend
for Southwest Alaska through the weekend into early next week, and
should also bring a reprieve from thunderstorm activity across
most of the interior Southwest.

The Gulf low is still expected to eject shortwave energy towards
towards Southcentral. Expect periods of light rain, increased cloud
cover and cooler temperatures across much of Southcentral. The
highest rainfall amounts will be more focused in areas favoring
upsloping enhancement with modest easterly flow in place, including
parts of the western Prince William Sound and western Copper River
Basin. Most of the Anchorage Bowl and Mat-Su Valleys may get
intermittent showers.
