.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

In the upper levels, a large high amplitude trough is centered
over mainland Alaska and extends well southward into the Pacific
(~40 degrees N latitude). A ridge is building upstream from the
northwest Pacific to the far western Bering Sea, ahead of the
remnants of Tropical Storm Meari which are approaching the
Kamchatka Peninsula. A complex series of short-waves moving
through the upper trough continue to produce widespread cloudy
and rainy conditions across southern Alaska. The one change
from recent days is that the stronger short-waves (and upper
low centers) are largely moving away from southern Alaska today,
leaving weaker flow and lighter rainfall. However, low clouds
and fog are also more prevalent across the region.

There is not much in the way of notable surface features at the
moment, with a surface high over the Aleutians and Bering Sea,
and a broad area of fairly homogeneous lower pressure over
southern Alaska and the Gulf of Alaska. There is a corridor of
gusty northerly winds along the west Alaska coast down across the
eastern Bering Sea, aided by cold air advection on the back side
of an upper low/short-wave diving southward through that region.
Meanwhile, a digging short-wave has initiated cyclogenesis near
the base of the trough over the northeast Pacific. This newly
formed surface low will become the primary weather-maker for the
Gulf of Alaska and Southcentral for the early part of the work
week.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

As we move into a higher amplitude pattern with stronger features,
models seem to be in better agreement, with fair agreement with
handling of all large scale features through Tuesday. As a
result, forecast confidence is average to above average.

.AVIATION...
PANC...The strength of flow above the surface will weaken
tonight/Monday as an upper level col moves overhead. When combined
with persistent weak cyclonic flow off of the Gulf of Alaska and
a moist boundary layer, this is a recipe for low clouds and fog.
While IFR/LIFR clouds have remained scattered this morning,
it appears these clouds will become more widespread Monday
morning. It's difficult to say if they will move over the
terminal, but expect a good chance of seeing at least a brief
period of IFR conditions between 12Z and 21Z Monday. The
prevailing ceiling will also trend lower tonight, likely
reaching to low end VFR or MVFR. As for winds, the airport will
remain along the northern periphery of winds coming out of
Turnagain Arm. There could be an isolated gust, but largely
expect these winds to remain off to the south and for prevailing
winds to remain less than 10 kts.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through
3...Tonight through Wednesday)...

The short of the long is that there remains no clear end in sight
to the overall cloudy, showery pattern during the next several
days. In the short term through much of Monday, Southcentral will
continue to sit in a col between high/low pressure in the upper
levels. This it leading to very little organization or especially
favored locations for widely scattered shower activity continuing
to drift within very weak, southerly flow in place. Recent rains
have helped sustain quite a bit of moisture in the low levels
across the Mat-Su Valleys and Anchorage area, keeping the threat
for at least patchy fog and low stratus development at close hand
tonight. Low level southeast flow should temporarily relax
tomorrow morning, and this could result in somewhat more
widespread fog/stratus development in this vicinity during the
early morning hours of Monday.

Looking further out into the coming week, the most notable change
will be the introduction of a much more potent synoptic low
rotating north and west into the Gulf between Monday and Tuesday.
A barrier jet is expected to develop as the low's front arcs north
towards the coast, increasing to gale force near and east of
Middleton Island by Tuesday afternoon. Meanwhile, showery
precipitation will become much steadier and heavier across the
Prince William Sound (PWS) and eastern Kenai Peninsula as the
frontal wave bends across and stronger east to southeast flow
resumes. A band of rain spreading northwest ahead of the front
across the Kenai Peninsula will have a short window to reach into
Anchorage and the western Kenai Peninsula on Tuesday morning,
before strengthening easterly, cross-barrier flow should promote
downslope drying and not much more than light showers or sprinkles
through Tuesday night. On the flip side, the western PWS and
eastern Kenai Peninsula will just see another onslaught of
torrential rainfall, with the Whittier area set to see another 3
to 4 inches and Seward another 1 to 2 inches from early Tuesday
morning to Wednesday afternoon.

Some bigger shifts in the relevant features will continue on
Wednesday, but the overall wet theme is not likely to waver. A
deep upper level low settling into Southwest should effectively
sling the Gulf low north into Southcentral as it becomes a
negatively-tilted, open wave aloft. This should result in rain
spreading back over the areas seeing at least a partial break from
the rain due to downsloping as flow veers to a more southerly
direction, with rain quickly spreading inland along the Cook Inlet
and up into the Mat-Su Valleys from south to north. Persistent
gap winds through the Turnagain Arm should bend into Anchorage at
some point Wednesday afternoon or evening, but model differences
in the the northward progression of upper level energy make timing
out the onset for gusty winds difficult at this juncture.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Tonight
through Wednesday)...

A low currently over Bristol Bay will drop south over the Alaska
Peninsula (AKPEN) overnight and merge with another low in the
North Pacific. As the low moves over the AKPEN, winds will be
enhanced through the gaps and passes as far west as Unalaska, with
gusts up to 40 kts possible over marine areas. Precipitation
should slowly dissipate overnight as the forcing moves south, but
the break in wet weather will be short as a fast moving and fairly
strong low pressure system moves from the Gulf of Anadyr to the
Y-K Delta Monday afternoon. Temperatures aloft over the Bering
Strait are expected to be between -4C and -6C, which will allow a
narrow corridor of gales to form off the coast of the Y-K delta
overnight Monday. Winds will also be enhanced by the elongated,
yet fairly compact nature of the storm, bringing rapid pressure
rises on the backside of the low in addition to the cold air
advection.

On Tuesday this storm will merge with a much larger and stronger
Arctic trough dropping south through the Western Bering. This
trough is forecast to pick up the remnants of the trough currently
over Bristol Bay, swinging it back north and providing an
additional moisture tap from the western Gulf. In essence, this
will increase rain coverage over most areas Tuesday and Wednesday
as the systems pinwheel over the area.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
Tonight through Wednesday)...

Fairly calm and quiet conditions are expected over the Bering
through tomorrow afternoon as a ridge continues to build overhead.
This will change Monday afternoon as a front moves east from a low
over the Kamchatka Peninsula. This will bring widespread rain and
small craft advisory winds to the Chain through Wednesday evening
as it moves east. Most of the energy then moves south by Wednesday
afternoon. An additional low moves into the Western Bering in it's
wake, but uncertainty remains in regards to the wind field and
strength surrounding the system.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Wednesday through Friday)...

Gulf of Alaska: Winds may increase to gale force on the southeast
side of a low in the Gulf on Wednesday, though confidence is low.
A front tracking northward through the Gulf on Friday may also
bring easterly gales through the Barren Islands and Kamishak Bay,
though timing of the frontal passage is uncertain. Seas are
expected to remain less than 20 ft.

Aleutians/Bering: A low developing near the central Aleutians on
Thursday may be accompanied by gale force winds wrapping the
center as it tracks to the eastern Aleutians through Friday. Seas
build to near 20 ft on either side of the central Aleutians by
Friday morning. Confidence in the track and strength of the low is
low.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Thursday through
Sunday)...

The GFS has negative height anomalies at 500 mb over much of
the Bering, Southwest and Southcentral Alaska through this
forecast period. The ECMWF and the GFS look active over the Bering
and the Gulf of Alaska with multiple surface lows. However, the
global models are not in lock step with the track of the lows. So
a blend was used to hedge for the vagaries of the models.
Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valleys will have a few short breaks in
precipitation but overall the pattern looks wet and leaning
towards wetter than normal for the this time of year.
