Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

An upper level low over the southcentral Bering Sea is currently
moving southeastward. An atmospheric river continues to move
southeastward across Southcentral Alaska. Radar shows most of the
rain associated with this atmospheric river over the southern
Kenai Peninsula, northern Gulf and Prince William Sound. Lingering
showers still persist across the Anchorage Bowl and Matanuska
Valley. Radar also shows this rain extending southwestward to over
the central Alaska Peninsula (south of King Salmon). Observations
show a weak southeasterly Copper River Wind as well as a weak
southeasterly Turnagain Arm wind.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Forecast confidence remains above average through Wednesday and
then becomes low Thursday and Friday. Guidance has significantly
shifted the track of the next low to the west compared to the
solutions shown 24 hours ago. Due to the lack of run to run
consistency there is low confidence where the rain will set up in
Southcentral.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

The system that brought significant rain to the Anchorage area and
Mat-Su Valleys over the past two days is departing to the east
with the trough axis moving through the area tonight. This will
shift flow aloft from southwesterly to northwesterly, which will
bring a dry and mostly sunny day to much of the region on
Wednesday. Cool morning lows are expected, particularly in the
Susitna Valley, where clear skies tonight will allow temperatures
to drop into the low 40s and even 30s north of Talkeetna.

The break in the weather is expected to be short-lived however as
a strong low currently in the south Bering Sea moves east towards
the western Gulf of Alaska Wednesday night. The system's front
will reach Kodiak Island first Wednesday afternoon and north
towards the Kenai Peninsula overnight and into Thursday morning.
The overall trend in the system has been slower moving and farther
to the west. This will allow the pattern to amplify and bring
another, potentially stronger atmospheric river to the Gulf Coast
Thursday and Friday. With the system becoming more amplified, a
slower transition from southerly flow to southeasterly flow in the
midlevels will bring some uncertainty in precipitation rates for
the Seward area. The southerly flow at the onset will also be more
favorable for a return of rain from the western Kenai Peninsula
north into the Mat-Su Valleys Thursday afternoon and evening.
Shortwaves will also aid in bringing precipitation into the
typical downsloped areas. On Friday the uncertainty in low track
increases slightly, but rain will likely remain steady and at
times heavy over the Western Prince William Sound.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Tonight
through Friday afternoon)...

Expect a generally quiet and dry pattern for the next few days as
weak upper level ridging remains overhead. Wednesday looks to be
the pick of the week as much of Southwest can expect sunshine and
temperatures in the low to mid 60s. The exception will be across
Bristol Bay where a strengthening storm system currently southwest
of the Pribilofs moves northeastward towards Kodiak Island through
Thursday. Therefore, expect increasing cloud cover from south to
north throughout Wednesday. Areas from Nelson Lagoon to Pilot
Point can expect a steady light rain from now through Wednesday
morning before cross barrier flow (downsloping) develops Wednesday
afternoon. However, a shower or two still cannot be ruled out.
There remains timing differences on exactly when the rainfall will
start especially from King Salmon west to Dillingham and
northward. Rain may start as early as the late afternoon Wednesday
or not until the late evening hours. Stay tuned to the latest
forecast as we continue to fine tune the timing. Once this system
moves in, expect unsettled conditions to continue throughout the
remainder of the forecast period through Friday afternoon. Expect
breezy conditions with gusts to 25 mph out of the north for
Wednesday. Highest gusts expected along the immediate coastal of
Bristol Bay. Any breezy conditions subside Wednesday evening as
the gradient relaxes. Eventually the Middle Kuskokwim Valley will
get in on the rain but not until sometime on Thursday. Much
uncertainty remains on the timing for this area.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
Tonight through Friday afternoon)...

A low pressure system currently southwest of the Pribilofs is
expected to continue intensifying this evening and overnight as it
moves southeastward. As a result, expect increasing winds to gale
force for the coastal waters around the Eastern Aleutians and
storm force wind gusts. Winds are expected to peak midday
Wednesday with peak gusts up to 55 kts especially through Unimak
Pass. Wave heights will also be on the increase in response to the
winds of 15 to 19 ft. Highest seas will be in and around Unimak
Pass as well as the coastal waters south of Dutch Harbor. In
addition to the strong winds, heavy rainfall is expected with near
3 inches for Dutch Harbor, locally 3"+ for the surrounding
mountains. Rain ends Wednesday evening, though gusty winds are
expected to remain through Thursday. High pressure otherwise
dominates the rest of the Bering and Aleutian Chain through early
Thursday. Another weaker storm system is expected to move into the
Western and Central Aleutians/Bering for Thursday afternoon
through Friday.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Friday through Sunday)...

Gulf of Alaska: Periods of small craft winds are likely in the
North Gulf Coast along the front on Friday morning. Otherwise,
expect winds less than 35 kts and seas below 20 ft.

Aleutians/Bering: Expect winds less than 35 kts and seas below 20
ft.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Saturday through
Tuesday)...

Model agreement is poor through the long-term period. Broadly
speaking, a longwave ridge will reside over the Western
Bering/Aleutians while a longwave trough will reside over the Gulf
of Alaska and Mainland Alaska. The jetstream winds between these
two features, cutting through the Bering Sea and across the
Central and Eastern Aleutians. Various upper level shortwaves and
troughs will move across the Bering Sea and Mainland Alaska
through the long-term. As models are struggling to handle these
features and how they interact with each other, conditions at the
surface are highly uncertain.

For the Southern Mainland, rainy conditions will likely prevail
as a vertically stacked low lingers in the Gulf. The GFS and EC
appear to be coming into better agreement, suggesting that the low
will move north to Kodiak Island on Sunday as an upper level
trough dips south from the Arctic. This will support wetter
conditions, especially along eastern Kenai Peninsula and Prince
William Sound due to persistent flow intersecting the north Gulf
coast. Agreement deteriorates into Monday, though there is the
potential for a shortwave to round the vertically stacked low and
reinforce rain along the coast through Tuesday.

For the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands, shortwaves moving along
the jetstream will likely bring bouts of rain through Saturday.
High pressure builds across the Bering Sea ahead of an incoming
surface low on Sunday, contributing to gusty northerly gap winds
through the Eastern Aleutian Islands and Alaska Peninsula. Then, a
surface low pushes into the Western Bering Monday, tracking
eastward through Tuesday. The GFS suggests winds along its front
could reach gale force, while the EC and Canadian are suggesting
that winds remain at small craft speeds. Though model
discrepancies abound, the general trend is that conditions will
become increasingly stormy by Tuesday.
