Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A large, stacked low filled with several embedded and smaller
scale waves continues to spin in place over western Alaska, with
the center still near the western end of the Seward Peninsula.
This is keeping a cool and wet influence on most of the southern
mainland, as several shortwaves and associate bands of shower
activity rotate within cyclonic, southwest flow in place near the
synoptic low out west. One of the more pronounced of these smaller
shortwaves is now working northeast from the northern Alaska
Peninsula up into the Cook Inlet region, supporting areas of rain
showers now moving up into the northern Kenai Peninsula, Mat-Su
Valleys and greater Anchorage area. A separate area of rain
continues to push up into the Prince William Sound region with
another shortwave trough moving up out of the Gulf, where GOES
west satellite and Middleton Island radar data are also showing
hints of a weak surface low developing near the north Gulf Coast.

Out in the west, things are in a relatively calm state for the
moment, with a large axis of zonal flow and a roughly 100 kt
upper jet in place over the Bering. The Pribilofs have been
treated to a break in the low marine stratus early this morning,
but low clouds remain socked in farther south across the Aleutians
and southern Alaska Peninsula. The outer reaches of a frontal
system are beginning to impact the westernmost parts of the
Aleutian Chain, where steady rain is beginning to spread in from
the south.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models remain in fairly good agreement at the synoptic level,
with the low near the Seward Peninsula expected to remain anchored
in place for the next several days and keeping the active storm
track across much of the outlook area. Looking at the short term
and for this afternoon, one of the bigger questions is how
unstable parts of Southcentral could become due to very cold air
aloft (around -25C at 500 mb) moving in with the upper level
trough axis moving overhead contrasting with warmer air in the low
levels. Almost every model is hinting at some degree of
instability developing today, in particular across parts of the
Copper River Basin and Wrangell Mountains. However, it's possible
cloud cover will remain too dense for this to materialize, and it
does not look likely that convective shower activity developing
with breaks of sun and surface heating will be strong enough to
produce lightning even if modeled instability parameters are
realistic.

Looking out at the rest of the weekend into early next week, there
are some discrepancies appearing for a shortwave and attendant low
expected to move up into the Gulf late Saturday into Sunday. Most
solutions are keeping the low and associated rainfall mostly out
over the Gulf, but a few (namely the 6z NAM) are taking the center
much farther north and sending precipitation well inland over
Southcentral. Meanwhile, there continues to be surprisingly good
agreement for an at least gale force low to move up into the
eastern Bering between Sunday and Monday.

.AVIATION...

PANC...Southerly winds will continue to slowly subside this
morning, but may pick up again slightly once again late this
evening, with 15 to 20 kt gusts possible at times through early AM
Saturday. MVFR ceilings with rain showers now moving through will
slowly improve through this evening, with ceilings rising to VFR
by around 5 PM tonight. However, ceilings at or below the 5000 ft
threshold could still linger for much longer into tonight.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3:
Friday through Sunday night)...

An upper-level and associated surface trough will move from the
Kenai Peninsula north to the Copper River Basin today. As it does,
showers that are extending from Cook Inlet north to the Mat-Su
Valleys will eventually slide east and diminish in coverage
through Saturday evening. Showers are also continuing this morning
across Prince William Sound and will persist through early
afternoon before moving inland along with the aforementioned
trough.

Scattered showers will linger across the higher elevations
overnight Saturday through Sunday, mainly over the Chugach,
Wrangell, and Alaska Ranges. Elsewhere across the interior, a few
breaks in the clouds are expected as the trough moves farther
north and a weak, transient ridge slides over the region.

The next storm system to impact Southcentral is expected to move
to the AKPen by Saturday afternoon with its associated front
entering the western Gulf. A moist, southeasterly flow will
develop ahead of the front, ushering in widespread clouds and rain
to Kodiak Island by late Saturday afternoon. Easterly winds will
also ramp up across the Gulf, with gales expected out ahead of the
front. The front is expected to lift to the northern Gulf by
early Sunday morning as the surface low moves to an area east of
Kodiak Island. Models are struggling with the exact placement of
the low and the northward progression of the front. However, the
trend in recent model runs has been to shift this system more
northward. As such, gusty gap winds, mainly Turnagain Arm winds,
are expected to increase beginning Saturday afternoon with rain
overspreading the Southcentral coast by Saturday evening. Right
now, it looks like interior Southcentral will be spared the bulk
of the precipitation. However, this may change if the northward
trend in future model runs continue.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

A quiet and relatively settled pattern is expected to become more
active late this weekend into early next week. Broad
southwesterly flow will allow for cool and cloudy conditions today
and on Saturday. A storm system is expected to move in from the
Bering Sea to over Southwest Alaska Sunday afternoon and evening.
This storm is expected to produce rain and strong winds. Storm
surge guidance is suggesting high water levels along coastal areas
around Togiak Monday morning as strong southerly onshore flow is
expected to coincide at the same time as high tide. Latest
guidance shows water levels potentially reaching 4ft above highest
astronomical tide (grass level).

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...

The weather pattern will remain quiet through Saturday afternoon
and then become more active Saturday evening as low pressure moves
in from the North Pacific. This low will rapidly strengthen as it
moves northeastward and will produce a large area of gale force
winds with areas of storm force winds embedded inside of the
gales. This storm is expected to continue moving northeastward to
over the Kuskokwim Delta by Monday night.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Sunday through Tuesday)...

Gulf of Alaska: A Western Gulf low moves along the front, and
dissipates in the Northern Gulf for Monday. The front extends
across the Northern Gulf through Tuesday. Forecast confidence is
good. Easterly small craft winds with areas of gales extends over
the Northern Gulf, and through the Barren Islands and Shelikof
Strait, diminishing Monday. Seas to 12 feet, subsiding. Gusty
Southwest winds moves across the Gulf, diminishing Tuesday. Seas
to 10 feet.

Aleutians/Bering: A strong Southern Bering low moves to Norton
Sound for Tuesday. Its front sweeps the Aleutians and Alaska
Peninsula through Tuesday. Forecast confidence is good. Gusty
winds wrapping the low increase to widespread gales over the
Central and Eastern Aleutians and Bering, the Alaska Peninsula and
Western Alaska Coast, diminishing Tuesday. Seas building to 15
feet over the Central and Eastern Aleutians and Bering for Monday,
subsiding. High pressure moves into the Western Bering Tuesday.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Monday through Thursday)...

With troughing over the Bering Sea and high pressure over the
northeastern Pacific, cooler temperatures and wetter conditions
are expected to continue through the extended forecast period.
Models are resolving an upper-level low remaining anchored over
the Bering Strait and are agreeing to keep this feature remaining
in this location through late next week. By Monday, models are
showing a potent shortwave phasing with the aforementioned low and
moving over the Southwest coast and then tracking through
Southcentral. Model spread grows when looking at the timing and
strength of the aforementioned feature. The Canadian model is
showing a much stronger shortwave impacting Southcentral, whereas,
the GFS and EC models have a weaker shortwave moving through the
region. As the trough continues to remain over the Bering Strait,
each feature/ shortwave that rounds the peripheral of the trough
and makes its way to the Mainland will continue to influence
sensible weather. The location and strength of where each feature
sets up will make a big difference in impacts, especially where
the highest rainfall amounts fall. The focus for hazards/impacts
will be possible flooding concerns with more rainfall falling on
already saturated ground from the current wet pattern.
