A weak trough of low pressure lingers along the north Gulf coast 
through Mon night. A 1007 mb low forms 40 nm north of Middleton 
Island Mon morning, moves 170 nm southeast of Middleton Island at 
1000 mb by Tue morning, and then exits the eastern Gulf through Wed 
afternoon.

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A pattern change continues to evolve both near the surface and
upper levels. An increasingly west-east oriented upper ridge out
west is undergoing what's referred to as "anticyclonic wave
breaking" near the tropopause across a longwave trough pinching
off into a closed upper low in the North Pacific. This process
will soon help form a Rex Block ridging pattern over the Bering,
one of the main features allowing for the seasonably cool pattern
beginning to take shape downstream across the southern mainland.
North of the ridge, an Arctic trough and attendant surface low are
swiftly advancing across the northern Bering towards the western
Alaskan coastline. A pair of cold fronts extend south and west
from the center, the first of which has already moved inland over
Southwest and begun to shear apart. Mixed precipitation has been
observed overnight with this first frontal zone moving past,
including light snow in Bethel and mostly rain along the Kuskokwim
Delta Coast. The second front is following quickly in tow behind
the first, already approaching the Pribilofs and Nunivak Island
with mainly rain showers and gusty southwest winds out ahead.
Otherwise, much of the Bering/Aleutians and coastal Southwest
remains shrouded by persistent marine stratus.

Very quiet, warmer and clearer conditions continue for the moment
to the east across most of Southcentral. Winds across most of the
region are quite light as well, except in the vicinity of Kodiak
Island, where northwest gap winds are picking up close to gale
force through the Barrens, Shelikof Strait and other portions of
the western Gulf.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models continue to be in good agreement with the synoptic pattern
through the middle of this week. The primary forecast challenge
continues to center around the cold air mass advancing into
Southwest with the front/trough today and out into Southcentral on
Monday. Unusually cool low level temperatures (as low as -10
Celsius at 850mb/5000') advecting into Southwest could support
snow with showers moving in with the deepening trough at
temperatures warmer than normally possible this late in the
spring. Thus, precipitation type is proving unusually difficult to
tackle across parts of the west domain through Monday. Even
though most solutions are realistically showing most of the
coldest air getting hung up against the Alaska Range, there could
still be enough cooling across Southcentral for snow levels to
briefly dip to unusually low heights with the coldest temperatures
on Monday and Tuesday.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions will persist. South to southwest winds
around 15 kts with gusts up to 25 kts are expected to begin this
evening with developing flow up the Cook Inlet, then gradually
taper off on Monday morning.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3...Sun
through Tue)...We have one more mostly sunny day in store for much
of the area before a fairly abrupt shift in the pattern ensues.
A potent, Fall-like system is currently diving from the Bering
Strait into SW Alaska. It will reach Southcentral on Monday and
move east Tue. Ahead of that system, a shortwave ridge is building
in and helping to push high clouds over the Alaska Range this
morning. Aside from those passing high clouds, most of the area
will see a good amount of sunshine today. Temperatures will once
again climb into the mid 50s and even low 60s in spots. Offshore
winds will persist through Seward, Kodiak, and Whittier, which
will help to create some localized warming in these localized
areas.

By tonight, the pattern change will be knocking on the Cook
Inlet's doorstep. The first noticeable sign of change will be a
significant increase in winds up Cook Inlet. These winds will
surge into Kachemak Bay and Kenai during the afternoon hours
before pushing into Anchorage by late this evening. Gale force
winds are expected to develop overnight through the Barren Islands
and southern Cook Inlet, which is rather unusual this time of
year. Seas will build quickly over Kachemak Bay reaching as high
as 10 ft by Mon morning.

The deep trough will proceed to drive a cold front across the
entire area late tonight through Mon. The best chances for
precipitation will generally be across areas north of Hatcher
Pass/Mat Valley. While QPF amounts are not all that impressive, we
are still tracking the airmass to be cold enough to support at
least some snow. A couple inches will be possible from Hatcher
Pass through the higher elevations of the Copper River Basin by
Mon evening. High temperatures could be 10-20 degrees cooler
than they have been the past few days. As the majority of the
energy starts to push east of the area by Tue, a surface low will
develop near Prince William Sound. This will serve to reinforce
the breezy offshore winds from the Barren Islands through Whittier
and Valdez. The week will start off feeling much more like
October than May.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

A cold front will track across southwest Alaska today, bringing
gusty southwesterly winds and mixed precipitation. Given the low
freezing levels and cooling temperatures aloft, much of this
precipitation should fall as light snow even if surface
temperatures climb into the 40s, though any accumulations would
be minimal. Temperatures aloft will cool even further tonight into
Monday, with 850 mb temperatures falling to nearly -10C over
interior regions. This will allow any lingering precipitation to
continue to fall as mostly snow. Drier air will begin to build in
Monday afternoon behind the aforementioned front and any lingering
rain/snow will gradually taper off. Skies will clear through
Tuesday and temperatures will rise as an upper ridge strengthens
over the Bering.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

Settled weather will persist across the Bering/Aleutians under
high pressure. Scattered showers are possible over the western
Aleutians on Tuesday on the northern edge of a low. The usual
patchy fog/low stratus remains possible.

&&.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Tuesday through Thursday)...

An upper trough moving through interior Alaska is expected to
induce lee cyclogenesis near the Kenai Peninsula early next week
with a newly developed area of low pressure translating
southeastward across the east Gulf of Alaska by the middle of the
week. Gales are anticipated through the gaps and passes of the
Alaska Peninsula as a tightened pressure gradient is maintained
between weak high pressure north of the Aleutians, the upper
trough over interior Alaska, and the departing area of low
pressure over the eastern Gulf. Outside of the elevated northerly
flow, however, mild and dry conditions with sub-gales will
prevail over both the Bering and the Gulf of Alaska into Thursday.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Wednesday through Saturday)

Seasonably dry conditions are forecast during the 4 to 7 day period
with a ridge of building high pressure over the Bering Sea and a
persistent trough of low pressure over the eastern Gulf of Alaska.
Upper level steering flow will keep shortwave activity on a
northwest to southeast trajectory into eastern portions of
Southcentral while the Southwest region and the Bering/Aleutians
will remain beneath a high pressure inversion. Over the Bering,
trapped moisture at the surface may result in areas of widespread
low-level stratus and fog at times but no significant precipitation
is forecast. An absence of disturbances across the Bering will
also keep surface winds at bay into the weekend. Further east and
despite the potential for one or two shortwave troughs to dip
across Southcentral, northerly winds at the surface will bring in
a drier air mass. This will limit precipitation chances across
the Anchorage Bowl and the Mat-Su. The potential for easterly
small craft winds may develop by the end of the week should any
weak easterly waves of low pressure slide across the Gulf coast.
