Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

High pressure continues over the North Slope, producing an easterly
wave pattern across Southern Alaska. A storm force low over Dutch
Harbor continues driving southwards today, followed quickly by a
transient ridge and another strong low. The second system
approaches the Western Aleutians by late Wednesday morning,
continuing to strengthen as it travels. Model guidance is
suggesting this becomes another storm force system, and with
colder air wrapping around the back this seems plausible. The low
changes trajectory, shifting eastward and tracking south of the
Chain on its journey to the Southern Gulf, its front entering the
Gulf by Thursday afternoon. By Thursday morning, guidance shows
the low becoming complex, with multiple low centers spawning
within the system. Models are struggling to come to terms with the
finer details of where and when these surface low centers will
pop-up.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models are in good overall synoptic agreement through the short
term and have come into better agreement for an incoming system on
Wednesday afternoon. There were quite a few discrepancies
yesterday regarding a low pushing towards the Western Aleutians
Wednesday, and while there is better overall agreement today,
there are still some disagreements to touch on. Namely, with this
system becoming more complex, developing multiple low centers that
each solution is struggling to hone in on. The NAM is showing a
weaker solution in comparison to the other models as well.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3/Today
through Thursday night)...

A look at the big picture for the next 3 days shows continued
mostly sunny with seasonable temperatures for the next couple
days, followed by a shift in pattern which will bring a return to
precipitation for portions of Southcentral late this week. First
off, an upper level low over the northeast Gulf of Alaska will
track slowly westward across Southcentral today through Wednesday.
A series of weak short-waves will traverse Southcentral as they
move around the low center. While daytime heating will lead to
instability off the surface (near sea level), the air mass over
the region is quite dry. In these scenarios it is much more likely
to initiate convection on the mountains. However, with abundant
snow still in place, solar energy is spent on melting snow and
not on warming the surface and destabilizing the atmosphere. As a
result, expect continued dry conditions the next couple days with
perhaps a few clouds. There will be a better chance for showers
on Kodiak Island and along the north Gulf coast/Prince William
Sound.

The upper level low will continue westward into Southwest Alaska
Thursday, while a deep Aleutian low tracks eastward underneath it.
The leading occluded front will reach Kodiak Island and the
western Gulf Thursday night, bringing steady rain and stronger
winds to the region. The low will remain over the southern Gulf as
it continues eastward, but the occluded front will head northward
toward the north Gulf coast, leading to wet and windy conditions
for the end of the week. Snow levels will start out fairly low
Thursday night - within a few hundred feet of sea level. However,
warmer air will accompany the front and leading to quickly rising
snow levels by Friday. This pattern is not favorable for bringing
much, if any, precipitation to inland portions of Southcentral,
but would expect considerable cloudiness and perhaps some light
spillover precipitation across the coastal mountain ranges.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

An upper level high over the North Slope and a quasi-stationary
upper low over Southcentral have combined to produce easterly flow
aloft and offshore flow at the surface. This pattern has lead to
clear skies and cool morning temperatures across most of the
region this morning as dry air moved in from the interior. Things
should warm up quickly with widespread sunny skies today. A few
afternoon showers may be possible over the northern Bristol Bay
coast and eastern side of the Kuskokwim Mountains as things heat
up and a few midlevel shortwaves move overhead, but these should
be brief and fairly light should they materialize.

As the upper low shifts to the west on Wednesday, onshore flow
will redevelop to allow for chances of rain over Bristol Bay in
the evening as a few weak shortwaves round the southern periphery
of the low. This will also push clouds back into the region,
though interior areas will likely still see some sunshine.
Cloud cover will become more widespread on Thursday as a front
moves over the eastern Bering and Alaska Peninsula. With moderate
southeast flow aloft most of the region will remain downsloped to
any precipitation, but an increase in cloud cover is likely for
Bristol Bay and the Kuskokwim Delta. Southeasterly gap winds will
accompany the front.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

The strong low that impacted the central Bering over the past two
days is quickly shearing apart and moving south into the North
Pacific. Gusty northwesterly winds will slowly subside near
Nikolski this morning on the backside of the low. Otherwise,
weather over the Bring will be fairly quiet today as the region
gets a brief break in between storms. Overnight Tuesday an upper
low moving east out of the Kamchatka Peninsula will merge with
another shortwave in the northwestern Pacific to form another
storm force low. Storms will reach the Western Aleutians Wednesday
afternoon once the low has the chance to tap into the cold air
moving across the western Bering. In the warm sector, a gale
force front and rain will move east across the Chain through
Thursday. Expect southeasterly gusts through gaps and passes
throughout the day on Thursday. There is some uncertainty in
regards to the evolution of the low as it moves east, with most of
the models developing mesolows along the storms front. However,
the impacts to the forecast around these features should be
minimal.

.Marine (Days 3 through 5: Thursday through Saturday)...
Gulf of Alaska: A deepening low pressure system will move
a weather front from the western Gulf Thursday to the northern
Gulf Friday. Easterly winds of 20 to 30 kt will develop Thursday
with low end gales up to 40 kt possible from the Barren Islands to
Kayak Island for Friday into early Saturday morning as a barrier
jet forms ahead of the front. Expect waves along the northern
Gulf to build to around 10 to 15 ft along the northern Gulf for
Friday in association with the gales. Forecast confidence for this
outlook is high.

Bering Sea: A north Pacific low south of the Aleutian Chain will
move east into the western Gulf through Friday. An accompanying
weather front will cross the eastern Aleutians and AKPen Thursday
before exiting the region Friday. Widespread high end small craft,
to low end Gales will extend as far north as the Pribilof Islands
and extend into Bristol Bay by Friday. Northwesterly gales are
expected along the backside of this low, with the core of these
winds channeled through the central and eastern Aleutians. Seas of
15 to 20 ft are expected across the southern Bering with seas of
20 to 25 ft possible on the Pacific side of the central and
eastern Aleutians through Friday morning. Seas will subside to 10
ft or less late Friday through Saturday. Forecast confidence for
this outlook is high.

Long Term Discussion (Days 4 through 7: Friday through Monday)...
An upper-level ridge over the northern half of the state will
weaken and shift to the southwest as an upper-level low moves east
from the Aleutians and extends a shortwave north toward the
Southern Mainland. At the surface, this translates to a weakening
of the ridge over the state as a surface low moves from south of
the eastern Aleutians Friday to the southern Gulf of Alaska late
Saturday through Sunday. An occluded front attached to the low
will sweep across the western and northern Gulf, bringing an
increase in rain and winds first along the AKPen and Kodiak Island
Friday then along the Southcentral coast through Saturday. Weak
ridging out ahead and north of this system, along with a cross-
barrier flow, should limit precipitation for inland locations,
although an increase in cloud cover through the weekend is likely.
This system then weakens and drifts southward late Sunday into
Monday with a general clearing trend from north to south across
the region.

Farther west, a ridge will build across the Bering and Aleutians
through the weekend in the wake of the low, resulting in a cool,
northerly flow across the Aleutian Chain. The ridge extends over
the western half of the state by Sunday and over the Southern
Mainland for Monday. A weak upper-level wave and associated
frontal system tries to move over the top of the ridge by Monday
with scattered precipitation for the Kuskokwim Delta possible. A
second weak surface low may impact the western Aleutians and
Bering for Monday as the ridge moves over the Mainland.

Temperatures across the region are expected to remain around average,
but will warm through the latter half of the weekend as the ridge
moves over the state and any lingering cloud cover from the Gulf
low diminishes.
