Cloud cover has now exited the CWA, which should allow for
temperatures to continue to fall through the night. Current
forecast lows look reasonable at this time, therefore no changes
made to the forecast.

The thinking in the short term remains generally the same as
previous forecasts. Weak cold air advection tonight in a broad upper
trough over the northern Plains is just reinforcing the arctic air
already in place. Surface high pressure slips in at the sfc but the
confounding factor continues to be cloud cover. Generally expect an
erosion of low clouds this evening on northwest flow, but no model
(even the HREF) has initialized well this afternoon. They are all
too progressive in cloud dissipation and are not accounting for
lingering patches to the west and northwest. Most models also do
bring in another layer of clouds across the northern tier late
tonight which may also prevent a steep fall-off in temperatures.
Flurries and the occasional burst of light snow will exit with the
clouds.
With the scattered nature of cloud cover expected, leaned toward a
colder solution for lows tonight, dropping temps into the negative
teens. Winds will remain fairly light overnight under the high.
While a few locales along the ND/SD border could see wind chills
briefly fall below -35F toward morning, most places will remain
solidly in wind chill advisory territory. Therefore, left the
current headlines alone.
The same concerns exist for Tuesday night regarding temps and wind
chills. However, there will be increasing cloud cover ahead of an
approaching low pressure system. Light snow is forecast to begin
early Wednesday morning though little accumulation is expected in
the Tuesday night period.

Regarding the forecast from 12Z Wednesday, onward: Keeping a Wind
Chill Watch going for Wednesday evening through mid-day Saturday.
Issuing a Winter Storm Watch for Wednesday evening through Friday
evening (central South Dakota) and from Thursday morning through
Saturday (northeast South Dakota/west central Minnesota) due,
initially, to a combination of increasing winds and falling snow
creating blowing snow and potentially significantly reduced
visibility, before becoming more of a potential ground blizzard
concern on Thursday after the falling snow has ended. There should
be somewhere between 1 and 4 inches of snow accumulating over this
CWA from early Wednesday morning through late Wednesday night to
blow around, plus the top couple of inches of last week's storm
system that is, presumably, blowable as well.
There really has not been much in the way of change, regarding
temperatures and wind chills from Wednesday on into the weekend.
There will be no lack of life-threatening wind chill values showing
up Wednesday night into Thursday (easily into the 40 below to 55
below zero range), and with these strong winds, these are the kinds
of conditions to not be out in!
There is also, increasingly, the potential for a clipper low to
sweep southeastward in the fast northwesterly flow aloft later in
the weekend (Christmas day/Christmas night), producing a very light
accumulation of precipitation, mainly across the eastern two-thirds
of forecast zones. But then, once more, there will be the potential
for some breezy/windy conditions to develop right on the back of
this clipper system heading into the beginning of next week.
