Quite a bit of cloud cover across the CWA this evening, with temps
holding fairly steady. Seems that clouds will cover much of the
area through the night, with not much more than a few degrees drop
in temps looking increasingly probable. Raised lows just a couple
degrees. Otherwise, potential exists for flurries or very light
snow overnight as well.

Lower stratus has been fairly motionless today, sticking along and
west of the Missouri River. Mid level clouds have progressed east
across the northern tier but are scattered to broken, while high
clouds are farther south but much more transparent. Cloud cover will
be driving the diurnal temperature pattern in the short term.
Current thinking is that there won't be much spread between highs
and lows with increased sky cover over the region, but they could
quickly tank to the low end of model guidance if there are any
breaks in the clouds like they did early this morning.
Hi-res models have backed off from previous runs on how far south
they are bringing shortwave energy and its associated light snow
showers. Therefore, have mostly a flurry mention in for Monday with
a dusting possible across far northeast SD/west central MN. Another
push of arctic air pushes in on the edges of a 1050s high late
Monday night into early Tuesday morning. Will likely need a wind
chill advisory leading into the wind chill watch time period but
will let the next shift determine if an earlier warning is
warranted depending on temperature and sky cover trends.

Compared to 24 hours ago, not too much has changed in the model
solutions for the out periods.
The potential for a multi-day period of wind chill warning criteria
wind chill values to happen still lines up in the either Tuesday or
Wednesday (to start) forecast period and persist through Friday. All
the various ensemble-powered progs for extreme cold and dangerous
wind chills still supporting a Wind Chill Watch that remains in
effect for this potential.
There is also still a chance for some light accumulating snow across
this CWA late Tuesday night through early Thursday morning when a
strong pv-anomaly/vort-max dives southeastward over the Rockies into
the central/southern plains. With that, a note-worthy signal
persists for some strong winds (15 to 30 mph with gusts potentially
to 40 mph or higher) to develop in association with this system
Wednesday through Friday. With it expected to be so cold (see ECMWF
Ensemble Vertical Profiles over this CWA), snow-to-liquid ratios
could be encroaching on 20:1 or lower. Although, at some point, it
becomes so cold that SLR's end up returning to something less than
20:1. As of this forecast package, the qpf forecast for this event
stands at appx 0.05 to 0.15 inches of liquid equivalent, which
translated into ~0.5-3.5in of snow accumulation. So, between that
and the ongoing deep (blowable?) snow pack already in place, seems
like there could be some (mostly open/rural) areas of the CWA that
run into problems, once again, with significantly reduced
visibilities and blowing/drifting snow by Wednesday evening,
persisting into Thursday.
