.SHORT TERM...(This Evening through Tuesday Night)

Quite a bit of active weather will begin to enter the picture later
tonight and early Tuesday as a potent spring storm system takes
shape to our southwest and moves north and east into our region.
First of all, our CWA should see a relatively quiet evening tonight.
A weak frontal boundary will remain draped across our southern zones
if not sink a bit farther south into southern sections of SD. We did
have a somewhat looking agitated CU field across our northeast zones
earlier today, but it has since filtered out. Still retained slight
chc pops across northeast SD/west central MN through late afternoon,
but if any activity materializes, it will be isolated at best. Clear
to partly cloudy skies this evening give way to increasing clouds
and overcast conditions overnight. Temperatures will remain rather
mild in the 30s to around 40 degrees.
A strong sfc low pressure system is progged to begin working into
southwest SD by sunrise Tuesday and shift northeastward through the
day...expanding or elongating in a northwest to southeast
orientation from ND south and east into MN by the end of the day
into Tuesday night. Warm air advection will kick in across the CWA
overnight through the day Tuesday. Pcpn associated with this is
expected to begin overnight first across the Missouri valley and
then expand eastward across the CWA through the morning hours.
Should be mostly in liquid form but higher elevations of the Prairie
Coteau could see a mix along with some of our northwestern zones in
parts of Corson, Dewey and Campbell counties through the early to
mid morning hours. It should stay all snow across the western
portions of Corson through the day Tuesday. But, it's a tricky
forecast considering temperatures will be critical to p-type along
with drier air aloft that could work into the system during the day.
Hence, some freezing pcpn is possible at times in some areas of our
northwestern zones. Accumulation wise, again our far northwest zones
stand the best chance at picking up at least a few inches tomorrow
into Tuesday night. Farther east and south during the afternoon
Tuesday, enough instability develops to produce some thunderstorm
chances for our far southern and southeastern zones. Think severe
chances just stay just to the southeast of our CWA, but wouldn't be
surprised to see a couple of stronger storms develop close to our
area.
Strong southeast winds will set up ahead of the low pressure system
through the morning into the afternoon Tuesday and then switch
around to the west to northwest on the backside of the low by late
in the day into Tuesday night...first occurring in our western
zones and then expanding eastward with time Tuesday night into
early Wednesday. High wind headlines have been issued in areas
absent of winter weather beginning late in the day into Tuesday
evening in our south and expanding with time toward the east. This
aspect will be touched on in the long term discussion below. The
noticeable changes surrounding this system in this forecast
package continue to revolved around the trend of shifting this
system a bit farther off toward the northwest. This has meant that
more of the wintry weather gets shifted back toward the northwest
a bit farther than previous forecasts. We still anticipate snow
to occur across north central South Dakota, perhaps not as much,
but still enough and combined with a most definite wind forecast
through the end of this period puts our far northwest zones into
concerns for blizzard conditions. Corson and Campbell counties
stand the best opportunity to see low visibility in snowfall and
strong winds, so a Blizzard Warning has been posted. Some
uncertainty still remains where winter and summer conditions
transitions so a Winter Storm Watch remains.
.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

When the period opens at 7 AM CDT Wednesday, the primary changes
from 24 hours ago include more dry slot influence and less
measurable snow potential over the eastern half of the CWA with this
system between 12Z Wednesday and 12Z Friday. The far northwestern
tier counties of north central SoDak may still see an additional 1
or 2 inches of snow fall occur, mainly between 12Z and 18Z Wednesday
before the best deformation/TROWAL-forcing retreats up into North
Dakota.
The primary concern over this region, increasingly, is the strength
of winds in this system's wake. A High Wind Watch has been posted
for the CWA, starting in the southwest Tuesday evening, and
spreading east during the day Wednesday, and persisting through
Thursday evening. Wind guidance for multiple days now has been
hinting at the potential for sustained winds of 40 mph and/or gusts
in excess of 55 mph, especially from late Tuesday night through
Thursday.
There is still a signal for another potential period of
precipitation Saturday night through Sunday night while the flow
pattern is a semi-flat/suppressed upper level ridge over the western
CONUS.
Temperatures are still progged to average out to below normal
through the period. Low level CAA on Wednesday will set the stage
for much of the region to see the layer 925hp to 850hp at or below 0
degrees Celsius (cooler across the northern half of the CWA and
warmer across the southern half of the CWA).
