Snow continues to wrap around the low pressure system, which is
centered near Yankton. This will be the story through the day,
with a couple more inches likely wherever the heavier bands set
up. Strongest winds will remain over the western CWA. In general,
forecast is in good shape through 00Z, will make some small
adjustments to QPF/POPs/winds based on obs/radar and expected
short term trends.

Main forecast challenge in the near term revolves around lingering
affects of the winter storm system, mainly precipitation chances and
winds on the back side of it. A strong upper level low is currently
situated over eastern Nebraska/southeastern South Dakota and will
basically continue to spin over that general area until it slides
east on Thursday.
At the surface, the low center associated with the ongoing storm
system is pretty much situated directly under the upper level low,
with the dry slot of the system bringing a respite in the
precipitation to the eastern CWA. The low will track slightly
northeastward by morning, then will track just a bit further east by
this evening, to generally the area where Minnesota and Iowa meet up
with South Dakota. Will begin to see some strong winds develop on
the back side of the system today, especially across central South
Dakota. Light snow will redevelop over the area as the dry slot
slides east. The low will finally pick up some speed tonight,
tracking to over Wisconsin. However, the pressure gradient on the
back side will tighten further, and light to moderate snow will
continue to wrap over the area. This snow will be lighter and
fluffier than what fell on Tuesday, so in combination with the
increasing winds, may see some significant reductions in visibility.
Will keep the Winter Storm Warning going for today and tonight to
account for this, along with some additional snowfall accumulations.
The strong winds will continue into the day Thursday, and could see
another 1 to 3 inches of snowfall accumulation, especially across
the eastern CWA. Additional headlines may be needed for Thursday,
but will give the next shift a chance to better evaluate where.
High temperatures today will be in the upper 20s to the mid 30s. Low
temperatures tonight will be in the lower teens across central South
Dakota, to the upper 20s across far northeastern South Dakota and
west central Minnesota. High temperatures on Thursday will range
from the upper teens across north central South Dakota, to the lower
30s across far northeastern South Dakota and west central Minnesota.
.LONG TERM...(Thursday Evening through Tuesday)

Not much has changed in the long term period. Clusters are still
showing the low centered over MN/WI for Friday and continuing to
move east through time. Deterministic models show much the same
thing. We will still have a chance for some light precipitation
Friday and Saturday in eastern SD as waves of energy reach back from
the low moving east. Added some light pops to cover this. Winds will
continue to be in the 30 to 40 mph range Friday as the cold front
moves across the region. This could result in areas of reduced
visibility due to blowing snow. In general, temperatures will cool
as we get closer to the weekend and then even out in the single
digits for the start of the work week.
