An area of low pressure will track across the Northern Plains today
and tonight, deepening as it does so. The main three hazards with
this system this afternoon through Wednesday morning is strong
wind, snow/blowing snow and dangerously cold wind chills.

A tightening pressure gradient, strong CAA and stout pressure rises
on the backside of the low will lead to the potential for northwest
wind gusts of 40 to 60 mph, strongest across portions of central
South Dakota this afternoon and early evening. A N/S band of
generally light snow will, at the same time, move from west to east
in the strong winds, leading to a period of reduced visibilities
while snow falls. By the evening and through the night, an inverted
sfc trough provides additional lift across the northern Prairie
Coteau and west central MN, leading to additional snow. Latest
models have shifted the low a bit further south, and so
accumulations have increased slightly in this area - up to 2" of
snow is possible particularly across portions of Traverse County and
locally across the western slopes of the northern Prairie Coteau by
Wednesday morning. Significantly reduced visibilities are
anticipated as *mainly new* snow blows, given the old snow age of
previous snow. The blowing snow model suggests blizzard conditions
could be reached with only small changes in parameters - an upgrade
may be needed in later shifts.

By midnight, wind chills of 25 below or colder begin spreading
through the forecast area, and values of 35 below or colder are
anticipated across north central SD by Wed morning as breezy
conditions linger through the morning. Light snow may also linger
across the far northeastern CWA during the morning as well, but
impacts should lessen through this time. High temperatures Wednesday
will be in the single digits on either side of zero.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday Evening through Monday)

Compared to 24 hours ago, no notable changes in the model solutions
in the out periods. As the previous shift mentioned, there really
isn't much to hang a hat on for precipitation chances in the out
periods. There's that period of low/mid-level WAA that gets going
into Friday to monitor. But for now, in house ensemble guidance is
rather low-key on pops/qpf potential between Wednesday night and
next Monday.

When the period opens Wednesday night, there will be some brutally
cold air in place over the CWA, while brisk 10 to 20 mph northwest
winds persist. "Feels like" temperatures will be well down into the
25 below to 45+ below zero range Wednesday night into Thursday.
Additional 25 below to 35 below wind chills are in the forecast
Thursday night into Friday morning and again late in the weekend.

There is still general agreement for the warming trend Friday into
Saturday before the next cold front swings the pendulum back to the
cold air side of things Saturday night through Sunday night. But
then, it's looking like there will be a prolonged period of warm
(perhaps above normal warm) conditions developing next week.
