11am MST for these areas.

.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 117 AM MST Sun Dec 11 2022

Low clouds and patchy fog will linger over southeastern New
Mexico this morning, but this should clear and erode away,
leaving mostly sunny skies across northern and central New Mexico
by the afternoon. High temperatures today will be a few to
several degrees above average, and breezy conditions will develop
by the afternoon. A strong low pressure system will approach New
Mexico on Monday and Tuesday, bringing a fast-moving Pacific cold
front along with it. In addition to the colder temperatures, snow
will accompany the front as it moves across western and central
New Mexico on Monday with snow decreasing and dwindling as the
front makes it into eastern parts of the state. This weather
disturbance will also cause winds to strengthen significantly
Monday and Tuesday. Wind speeds on Monday will be highest from the
south central mountains and highlands into the northeast
highlands where gusts of 50 to 60 mph will be possible. The focus
for strong winds on Tuesday will center over the central mountains
and highlands into the east central plains where gusts of 45 to
55 mph will develop. Temperatures will remain chilly and below
average through the remainder of the week.

.SHORT TERM...

Abundant boundary layer moisture is advecting into far southeastern
NM this morning, around the western periphery of a 1024mb MLSP
surface high centered over northern OK. Low clouds and fog are
associated with this airmass and will monitor the need for any Dense
Fog Advisories for Chaves, Roosevelt, and Curry Counties this
morning as our neighboring offices in TX have done. Any fog
development is expected to burn off by late morning, with
redevelopment likely again tonight in the same areas of the Caprock
and lower Pecos River Valley.

Meanwhile, a 530dm H5 upper low centered just off the OR coast is
the main weather feature slated to roll through the western CONUS
over the next 72hrs. Southwest winds begin to strengthen today with
breezy to locally windy conditions during the afternoon period. Have
nudged highs a bit warmer than guidance through the northeastern
plains and central highlands given the downsloping component of the
winds. Went cooler than guidance over southeastern and east-central
parts of the forecast area due to the aforementioned fog potential
delaying diurnal heating there. Daytime highs from Clovis to
Portales to Roswell will greatly depend on when any low clouds or
fog burn off today. The H5 upper low tracks over UT filling to 539dm
with a strong 50-60kt H7 jetmax moving over south-central and
southeastern portions of the forecast area. Vertical mixing looks to
be the main mechanism to translate these stronger winds toward
ground level through the day Monday. The latest 00Z suite of
guidance has come down a nudge in overall wind speeds. However,
given the favored setup with a 993mb MSLP surface low just east of
the Front Range tightening the sfc pressure gradient through
northeastern NM, have gone ahead an expanded the High Wind Watch to
include the Northeast Highlands (Las Vegas) and South Central
Highlands. Southwest winds quickly turn westerly with brief bouts of
strong gusts likely to accompany the fropa west to east across the
state through Monday.

Aside from the strong winds, precipitation looks to enter western NM
Monday morning, reaching the Central Mountain Chain Monday
afternoon. Snow levels look to start off fairly low near 5000',
staying near ground level across western and central NM through the
day Monday. The Pacific front and orographic uplift along western
slopes will be the main forcing with snow favoring along and west of
the Continental Divide and high terrain of the northern mountains
through Monday. Downsloping looks to limit precipitation potential
for western and central valley areas. Southwesterly winds riding up
into the Upper Rio Grande could enhance precipitation potential near
Taos making this area the exception to the rule Monday afternoon.
Winter weather advisories look likely for the western and central
high terrain zones. Snow amounts are borderline warning however, and
there is potential for blowing snow to producing brief winter storm
conditions with the fropa. Will hold off issuing any winter
highlights at this time and let the day shift have another go at
determining the need for advisories or warnings.

.LONG TERM...
(Monday night through Saturday)

The upper low will advance Monday night into Tuesday morning with
its center near the CO-KS border by daybreak Tuesday. Precipitation
would have dispersed and dwindled considerably late Monday night
with the baroclinic zone having shifted well east of NM. This will
leave only some light showers persisting over the high terrain
into Tuesday morning, mostly on orographically-favored, west-
facing slopes as the flow turns more westerly. As the low deepens
and shifts northeastward into NE through Tuesday afternoon, these
orographics will stay at work with some modest instability also
present due to the strength of the synoptic cold pool (-31 C at
H5), and this will keep isolated light mountain snow showers
going. The cold air aloft will ensure daytime high temperatures
stay 5 to 15 degrees below average, and with such a pronounced
pressure gradient present, a windy and very brisk day is expected.
Wind chill values in the teens and even below zero will be
possible, especially Tuesday morning and again overnight. Westerly
winds will be strongest from the central mountains eastward along
the I-40 corridor to TX where another round of wind advisories
will likely be needed.

Temperatures aloft will warm by 4 to 8 degrees C at H5 on
Wednesday, but will still be anomalously cold (-20 to -25 C), and
as the flow veers a bit more northwesterly, any temperature gains
at the surface will be minimal. Orographics would wane in this
slightly more subsident flow, and no showers are anticipated.

As has been the case for the past few days, deterministic models
are struggling with the pattern evolution toward the end of the
week. There are continued indications that a mid latitude Pacific
perturbation will be upstream with potential for it to roll
inland and possibly impact the southern ConUS or Mexico, but this
will be governed by a fickle and amplifying pattern characterized
by a sharp ridge west of British Columbia and a vast, deep vortex
over the Great Lakes region. Height and temperature fields aloft
would seem to steer slightly below average, and the forecast
temperatures remain below climatology with scant chances for
precipitation built in next weekend when the aforementioned
Pacific wave might make an appearance in NM.

(18Z TAFS)

IFR low stratus deck is coming within a few miles of KROW, but
doesn't appear to be making further progress based on the latest
visible satellite imagery. So, VFR conditions prevail at TAF sites
and are forecast to persist until later tonight at KROW and KTCC,
when a larger area of low stratus/fog is forecast to develop.
Higher forecast confidence on KTCC seeing IFR conditions late
tonight into Monday morning thank KROW, where low stratus may once
again flirt with the air field. Otherwise, MVFR conditions are
likely in snow at KFMN and KGUP with a strong cold front late
Monday morning, with IFR conditions possible. Increasing southwest
flow will result in gusty winds this afternoon at KGUP, KLVS and
KTCC. Winds aloft will increase further overnight through Monday
morning. Areas of mountain obscurations will likely develop late
Monday morning across far western NM.

No critical fire weather concerns through the forecast period.
Morning fog potential exists for the east-central plains today and
Sunday morning. Southwest winds strengthen considerably Monday
afternoon for south-central and central portions for the forecast
area, turning westerly Tuesday. A winter storm system then rolls
through the area with snow accumulations favoring the western slopes
of the western and central NM, peaking in intensity Monday and
tapering off through Tuesday. Temperatures trend well below normal
behind the Pacific cold front Tuesday. Reinforcing shots of cold air
infiltrate the state, especially the eastern plains Wednesday and
Friday keeping temperatures well below normal into next weekend.
Ventilation will be good to excellent Monday and Tuesday, becoming
mostly poor each day for the rest of the week.
