Guidance continues to show the threat of high winds reaching the
Sacramento Mountains and Sangre de Cristo Mountains and adjacent
northeastern highlands along I-25 from Las Vegas to Raton tonight,
spreading to the rest of the northeastern plains and along I-40
from Clines Corners eastward Friday morning. Have gone ahead and
upgraded the High Wind Watch to a High Wind Warning and expanded
these to cover all of the aforementioned area through Friday
afternoon.

Warming trend expected through Friday until the next storm system
brings strong winds and precipitation. The highest winds will
favor the central mountains and eastward and precipitation will
confined to the northern mountains. Cooler temperatures will grip
the weekend along with additional rounds of valley rain and
mountain snow. Another windy day is expected on Monday as a cold
front moves through the area. Highs Tuesday will be several
degrees colder than Monday's readings.

Southwest winds will be increasing today but moreso later tonight
and Friday as an upper trough swings through the central Rockies.
Another batch of high clouds to cross NM from west to east this
afternoon and tonight. May need to consider a Winter Weather
Advisory for late tonight into Friday for the Tusas Mountains.
Although at this time forecast snow amounts are generally below
advisory level, the combo of snow and wind could increase the impact
level. Also added some zones in northeast NM to the existing High
Wind Watch for later tonight/Friday and added the South Central
Mountains to a separate High Wind Watch, although the start time of
12Z Friday may need some adjustment. Forecast soundings indicate 50
kts or greater just off the deck for these areas.

Otherwise, today's highs are expected to be warmer overall but
especially across the eastern plains. Highs Friday will be a few
degrees cooler across the northwest third of the state but warmer
elsewhere and near to about 15 degrees warmer than normal. Lows
tonight will be several degrees warmer.

.LONG TERM...
(Friday night through Wednesday)

Disturbance that brought windy conditions will quickly eject into
the Great Plains Friday evening, allowing conditions to improve
by nightfall. With its departure, flow aloft flattens, becoming
more west-southwest. As it does, a slug of subtropical moisture
makes its way inland from the Pacific. This will work to fuel rain
showers across the southern portion of the CWA on Saturday, while
orographic lift helps to initiate some light snow showers across
the northern mts. Precipitation will expand in coverage but warm
temperatures will keep PTYPE more in favor of rain or wintery mix,
save for the high terrain. Meanwhile, a low pressure system
spinning off the PacNW coast will wobble its way inland, taking
the long way around the California coast before finally making its
way to the Great Basin. Its first foray into the country will
bring some downstream effects in the form of small disturbances to
the Land of Enchantment Monday. Winds will kick up, especially
across the central mts and eastward, as well as the western high
terrain and their adjacent highlands. A slight chance of mountain
snow and valley rain will favor northern NM and portions of the
southern mts. The low then pushes back out to tour CA, allowing
for somewhat relaxed -- albeit colder -- weather to return on
Tuesday. The scene is set to change Wednesday as the system
migrates back inland with the potential to bring impacts to
sensible weather that night into Thursday.

VFR with breezy wly/swly winds this afternoon. Gusts of 15 to
30kts will be common through the highlands, with higher isolated
gusts to 40kts at higher elevations of the Sangre de Cristo
Mountains. Winds decouple after sunset, replaced with LLWS impacts
for many areas along and just east of the Central Mountain Chain
and along the Continental Divide tonight. These LLWS impacts
spread eastward toward the TX border through northeastern and
east-central NM by 09Z. LLWS looks to end as these higher winds
aloft begin reaching down the ground level for nearly all
terminals by the mid-to-late Friday morning. Widespread high winds
are expected Friday afternoon, look for these to be included with
the 00Z TAF.

.FIRE WEATHER...

Breezy to briefly windy conditions expected this afternoon along the
east slopes of the central mountain chain into northeast NM and near
the AZ border as highs warm to about 5-10 degrees above normal.
Southwest to west winds strengthen tonight over the northern high
terrain and even more on Friday along the central mountain chain and
into northeast and east central NM as a disturbance passes to our
north. Gusts to around 50 to 65 mph are possible, but forecast
humidities remain above 15 percent. Scattered rain and snow showers
may also develop over the Tusas and Sangre de Cristo mountains
Friday but any wetting precipitation or accumulating snow will be
mostly confined to the peaks of the Tusas.

Models continue to indicate subtropical moisture will stream over
southern NM Saturday through Sunday but vary how far north this
deeper moisture will get into central or even northern NM. This will
be dependent on the position and speed of an upper trough moving
into the Great Basin, which models are having some differences
resolving. At this time, forecast PWAT values Saturday through
Sunday range from 0.5 to around 1 inch south of I-40 with snow
levels to increase significantly during the day Saturday and
continue the trend Sunday before lowering about 500-1000 feet
Monday. Therefore any precipitation over the weekend is more likely
to be rain except in the northern mountains above about 8500 feet.
On Monday chances for precipitation will be more limited to the
northwest and north central as the moisture plume may be shunted
back to the south.

Good ventilation west of the Contdvd and along the central mountain
chain today will expand to good to excellent across northern and
central NM Friday. Widespread poor ventilation forecast for Saturday
and Sunday.
