Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Albuquerque NM 329 PM MST Mon Nov 28 2022 ...New SYNOPSIS, SHORT TERM, LONG TERM, FIRE WEATHER... .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 304 PM MST Mon Nov 28 2022 Strong to damaging winds are expected tonight over the Sangre de Cristo and Sacramento mountains tonight ahead of the next storm system. These strong winds will move down to the valley on Tuesday as a cold front moves through the region. Meanwhile, the storm system will also bring a round of snow for the northern mountains late tonight into tomorrow with a few inches of accumulation likely. Temperatures are expected to plummet Tuesday night into Wednesday behind the system as skies clear and winds relax. Temperatures will warm to above average areawide late week. Moisture from the Pacific will stream in over the weekend ahead of the next storm system with a increase in cloud cover and precipitation chances expected. && .SHORT TERM... (This evening through Tuesday night) Issued at 304 PM MST Mon Nov 28 2022 An upper level trough tracking eastward over the northern and central Rockies will steer a strong polar jet stream over the forecast area tonight and Tuesday with strong to very strong winds. A sharp surface trough will also develop south of a 993 mb surface low in eastern CO. Wind speeds at 700 mb over NM will commonly peak from 40-60 kt, except up to 70 kt along and just east of the central mountain chain, resulting in surface wind gusts generally from 40 to 65 mph, except up to 75 mph along the high peaks of the central mountain chain and immediately adjacent east slopes (including Dunken an Ruidoso). The strong winds will begin tonight over the mountains and immediate east slopes of the central mountain chain, but not until Tuesday morning across the bulk of the eastern plains. The jet stream will exit around sunset enabling surface winds to weaken. In addition to the strong winds the upper trough will produce some orographically enhanced snow over the northern mountains, especially near the CO border. The Tusas Mountains should be the big winner with widespread 3-6 inch amounts and locally up to 8 inches mostly late tonight through Tuesday morning. Along and north of Highway 60, high temperatures will trend a few to 25 degrees cooler on Tuesday compared to todays readings, while remaining about the same farther south. && .LONG TERM... (Wednesday through Sunday) Issued at 304 PM MST Mon Nov 28 2022 After a frigid start Wednesday morning, high temperatures will be below average across the region behind the Pacific cold front. Temperatures will be 5 to 10 degrees warmer across the northwest and north compared to Tuesday thanks to mostly sunny skies and dry air in place. The cooldown will be most noticeable across the eastern plains with highs 10-20 degrees cooler than Tuesday. Return flow will set up as early as Wednesday afternoon across the eastern plains as surface high shifts east into the southern plains. Upper level flow backs to more southwesterly Wednesday night ahead of the next upper level trough in the Pacific northwest. This will result in warmer lows by about 5-15 degrees compared to Tuesday night/ Wednesday morning. Temperatures warm to near to just above average on Thursday across the region. Some breezy southwest winds are expected across the eastern plains due to the development of a lee surface trough/low in southeast Colorado. Low temperatures will be even warmer Thursday night (5 to 15 degrees above average) thank to a increase in PWATS ahead of the upper level trough. Friday looks to be the warmest day of the forecast period especially across the eastern plains thanks to downsloping west wind. Westerly winds will strengthen even more east of the central mountain chain. Upper level cloud cover could help limit the mixing of stronger upper level winds down to the surface but Wind Advisory criteria could be met across parts of the eastern plains Friday. Meanwhile, a weak upper level trough will pass through northern mountains bringing a round of snow showers. The weekend is looking cooler and wetter thanks to a moist southwesterly flow from the Pacific with lower elevation rain and mountain snow expected for much of the region ahead of a deeper upper level along the Pacific coast. && .AVIATION... (18Z TAFS) Issued at 1046 AM MST Mon Nov 28 2022 With a sharp surface trough in the lee of the southern Rockies and strengthening flow aloft, windy conditions are forecast along and east of the central mountain chain today. Mountain wave is forecast in the lee of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains today, then in the lee of the central mountain chain tonight and Tuesday as the flow aloft strengthens further. Mountain wave events often produce squirrely winds at KLVS as the flow swirls around the southern end of the Sangres. Strengthening flow aloft tonight will result in fairly widespread low level wind shear impacting most TAF sites. A disturbance will bring accumulating snow, IFR conditions, and mountain obscurations to the northern mountains late tonight and Tuesday. Additionally, west surface winds from 40-60 KT are expected areawide on Tuesday. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 304 PM MST Mon Nov 28 2022 An upper level trough will pass mainly north of NM tonight and Tuesday cooling temperatures and raising humidities across the fire weather forecast area, while producing a few to several inches of snow in the mountains near the CO border. The bigger impact with the system will be widespread strong winds as the polar jet stream crosses tonight and Tuesday, and a sharp surface trough develops south of a 993 mb surface low in eastern CO. Surface wind gusts will commonly reach 40 to 65 mph tonight and Tuesday, except as much as 75 mph over the highest peaks of the central mountain chain and immediately adjacent east slopes as a mountain wave sets up. Winds will weaken shortly after sunset Tuesday evening as the jet stream exits the area.
