Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Albuquerque NM 1031 PM MST Mon Nov 7 2022 ...New AVIATION... .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 242 PM MST Mon Nov 7 2022 Above normal temperatures have been observed across much of western New Mexico today, but low clouds slowed today's warming in eastern areas of the state. Low clouds and perhaps some fog are expected to return to southeastern and east central areas of the state late tonight into early Tuesday morning. These clouds along with some high cirrus clouds in other areas of the state may bring temporary obstructions for tonight's lunar eclipse viewing. Breezy conditions are expected during the day Tuesday with a possible stray shower or thunderstorm in east central to northeastern New Mexico. Winds will strengthen much more Wednesday and Thursday, with wind directions beginning from the south southwest before changing to more of a west northwest direction. Rain and a few mountain snow showers will also develop late Wednesday into early Thursday across northwestern and north central New Mexico. Cooler temperatures will also move into the state by Thursday. && .SHORT TERM... (This evening through Tuesday night) Issued at 242 PM MST Mon Nov 7 2022 An upper level low pressure system will sink southward off the Pacific Northwest coast tonight through Tuesday, then begin shifting inland over the Great Basin Tuesday night. Broad scale convergence under the system, and flow around a surface high pressure system over the Great Lakes, will continue to draw a rich return flow of low level moisture north and northwestward over NM's eastern plains with widespread low clouds, as well as patchy fog and drizzle, tonight through Tuesday morning with more fog and low clouds likely Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Models are picking up on a weak perturbation in southwest flow aloft that may destabilize the atmosphere enough for some elevated rain showers in the mix as well tonight through Tuesday. The atmosphere may become unstable enough east of the central mountain chain for a few thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and early evening, but this will be contingent on if and how long it takes the low cloud shield to erode from the west in the daytime sun. At this time the best chance for isolated, garden variety thunderstorms looks to be south southwest of Capulin to the south central mountains. Because of all the cloud cover across the east on Tuesday we are forecast high temperatures a little below guidance. && .LONG TERM... (Wednesday through Sunday) Issued at 242 PM MST Mon Nov 7 2022 After beginning the morning with some low clouds and possible fog and drizzle early Wednesday, the eastern plains will start to clear out, and the primary weather concern will shift to wind. The western ConUS low will open up into a trough, with a strong belt of southwesterlies aloft moving into the American Southwest. Current prognoses of 700 mb winds show southwesterlies of 35 to 50 kt over a large swath of the state on Wednesday while a lee-side surface cyclone is expected to develop in eastern CO and deepen to near 996 mb. The surface gradient orientation may cause winds to be of a southerly or south southwesterly direction, perhaps enhancing speeds in the north-south oriented valleys such as the Rio Grande. For now, the highest speeds still remain over the southwestern and northeastern zones where solid advisory level criteria is looking to be met. The trough/low will shift northeastward into the Rockies Wednesday night into early Thursday, and while the bulk of the precipitation will bypass New Mexico, northwestern to north central zones will pick up some light rain and mountain snow showers with generally 1 to 3 inches of fresh snow accumulation above 8,500 ft. Winds aloft will likely peak over NM during the Wednesday night to early Thursday morning time frame, and this will be a good thing as it will limit surface wind speeds due to the asynchrony of diurnal mixing. The low will wobble into the northern Great Plains during the daytime Thursday, causing the speed max aloft to shift east/northeast of NM with a directional shift to more of a westerly northwesterly direction. While winds at ridge top and mountain peak level may turn gust and strong to severe Wednesday night, the majority of zones will wait until the daytime Thursday to experience the more widespread windy conditions (mainly along and east of the central mountain chain). Precipitation would also wane quickly from west-east during the day Thursday. Colder temperatures will also be sweeping into NM on Thursday with cold air advection likely continuing into early Friday as the surface gradient alters to more of a north-south orientation and allows for much lighter wind speeds. Friday night into Saturday morning looks to be the coolest period. Temperatures will warm each day this weekend, but daytime highs will still fall short of early November climatology while dry conditions persist. 52 && .AVIATION... (06Z TAFS) Issued at 1025 PM MST Mon Nov 7 2022 Low-level southeasterly flow will continue through tonight and continue to result in widespread MVFR and IFR conditions in low clouds, drizzle and patchy fog east of the central mountain chain tonight through Tuesday morning. The low clouds will likely erode from the west during late morning or early afternoon. Elsewhere, high clouds will continue lifting northeastward through NM. A few showers or a rogue thunderstorm is possible east of the central mountain chain later tonight into Tuesday morning as a weak jet level wind maxima moves through. Low clouds and fog in eastern NM is forecast to return around sunset Tuesday. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 242 PM MST Mon Nov 7 2022 A rich return flow of low level moisture will persist along and east of the central mountain chain tonight through Tuesday night. There may even be a few light rain showers, thunderstorms, and some drizzle east of the central mountain chain tonight through Tuesday evening, but wetting precip is unlikely. An upper level low pressure system off the Pacific Northwest coast tonight and Tuesday will shift inland over the northern and central Rockies Tuesday night through Thursday strengthening the flow aloft over NM. A surface trough will also develop with surface winds becoming breezy to windy over northeast areas starting Tuesday, then breezy to windy conditions over most of the forecast area as the jet stream crosses Wednesday through Thursday. Gusts from 40-50 mph will be common Wednesday through Thursday, except potentially near 60 mph late Wednesday night into Thursday morning along and just east of the central mountain chain when/where the flow aloft will be strongest. In the wake of the storm system, high temperatures are forecast to bottom out Friday around 7 to 16 degrees below normal, with much lighter winds and widespread poor ventilation.
