* WHAT...Southwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph 
  expected.

* WHERE...Northern and Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Sandia 
  and Manzano Mountains including Edgewood, Southwest Mountains, 
  Glorieta Mesa Including Glorieta Pass, South Central Highlands, 
  and Johnson and Bartlett Mesas Including Raton Pass.

* WHEN...From 2 AM Sunday to 6 AM MDT Monday.

* IMPACTS...Damaging winds may blow down trees and power lines. 
  Power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, especially 
  for high profile vehicles. Areas of blowing dust across the lower 
  elevations may reduce visibility to less than 3 miles at times.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Take action to secure trash cans, lawn furniture, and other loose or 
lightweight outdoor objects. Extremely hazardous driving conditions 
can be expected, especially for motorists in high profile vehicles 
who should consider delaying travel.

W/NW winds will pick up this afternoon starting b/w now and 19Z,
with peak gusts of 15-30kts for most terminals. KROW looks to see the
latest onset of wly winds closer to 20Z. Will continue to monitor
smoke impacts at KSAF-KLVS through the TAF period with necessary
amds. Trapped mtn wave clouds along east slopes of the Sangre de
Cristo's look to dissipate steadily through the afternoon. Winds are
forecast to decouple after sunset b/w 01Z- 02Z with light terrain
driven drainage winds overnight. Stronger SW/W winds expected for
Saturday.

.SYNOPSIS...
Winds remain relatively light today outside of breezy conditions
along the central highlands and east central plains. Saturday brings
the start of what is expected to be a significant and extreme fire
weather pattern. Windy and dry conditions that are expected to last
from Saturday through much of next week will allow ongoing wildfires
and any new ones to rapidly spread. Stay weather-aware this week, and
have a plan in place should you need to evacuate on a moment's
notice.

.DISCUSSION...
SHORT TERM...(TODAY THROUGH SATURDAY)...
Breezy to locally windy conditions today and this evening as surface
low pressure sets up over northeast NM and a transition to more
zonal flow with some passing high clouds starts to take place. A
warming trend to continue today with highs about 5-15 degrees warmer
than normal. Some areas along the east slopes of the central
mountain chain as well as portions of the East Central Plains and
the Santa Fe area will see near record highs this afternoon. Near
record highs will be more widespread over much of the forecast area
Saturday afternoon. Southwest winds will be strengthening however on
Saturday, and there will be areas of blowing dust in the afternoon.
Wind advisories will likely be necessary Saturday afternoon along
the Chuska mountains to Zuni and over the Northeast Highlands at a
minimum, if current model trends persist. Lows tonight will be about
5-15 degrees warmer than normal.

LONG TERM...(SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY)...
The forecast is still on track for a prolonged period of strong winds
and very dry conditions. For the remainder of the weekend, a PacNW H5
low will slowly take shape off the coast of OR and dig southward into
SoCal through Tuesday night. As it does so, strong southwesterly flow
will stay in place over NM as an incredibly potent upper-level jet
carves its path from SoCal into the northern Rockies. The strong
winds observed on Saturday will only be the start of a very windy
pattern that will stay until the aforementioned H5 low finally lifts
northeastward - which may not be until the end of the week.

The strongest winds during this period at this time are most likely
on Sunday and Monday. On Sunday, 700mb flow strengthens across NM to
45 to 55 knots while a lee-side low deepens to about 983mb over SE
CO. Similar conditions are expected on Monday. Daily rounds of
widespread wind highlights are likely with damaging winds possible
along with areas of blowing dust.

The winds expected over the next week will not be the strongest NM
has ever seen nor will the airmass be the driest. So what makes this
event a potentially historic one? All of the ingredients that are
coming together are still well outside of climatology. The ~535dam
H5 low is anomalously strong for early May. The potent jet that it
will steer across the Rockies is outside of the climatology for this
time of year, and the PWATs will be below the 5th percentile. And
when you take all of this and have it in place for several days
during a time when the area is already currently suffering from
devastating wildfires, it is not going to be kind to the Land of
Enchantment.

Models are struggling on the track and progression of the low after
Wednesday, as they have been all week. The GFS currently is still the
fastest with exiting that low, but then brings another one right on
its heels. The ECMWF is much slower, prolonging the windy conditions
into Friday. Ensemble guidance offers little clarity, but at this
time, confidence is high that the windy conditions will persist
through much of the week.

Finally, what about the hope for dryline thunderstorms across the
east by the end of the week? Unfortunately, it's not looking quite as
promising as it once did. Return flow still tries to develop across
the east, but if this low is as slow as models are depicting right
now, the moisture will not be able to make it into eastern NM as
strong southwesterly flow dominates. Did keep a slight chance for
thunderstorms across the plains late in the week, but confidence is
low, and if trends hold, would not be surprised to see those PoPs
continue to be scaled back.

.FIRE WEATHER...
...ELEVATED TO LOCALLY CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS EXPECTED IN
THE CENTRAL TO NORTH CENTRAL MOUNTAINS AND HIGHLANDS TODAY...
...A DANGEROUS AND LONG DURATION CRITICAL EVENT THIS WEEKEND INTO
THE MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK...

Elevated to locally critical fire weather conditions expected this
afternoon from the Sandia Mountains through Clines Corners to Santa
Rosa and north to the Las Vegas area and into the northern mountains
where spotty winds with gusts near 35 mph will be possible and will
coincide with some near record high temperatures, high Haines and
very low humidities.

A prolonged and dangerous critical fire weather pattern Saturday
through the middle of next week continues to be indicated by
forecast models. Southwest winds will progressively strengthen each
day Saturday through Monday as poor humidity recoveries dominate and
afternoon humidities fall below 10 percent. On Saturday 10 to 15
hours of single digit humidities will be widespread along and south
of I-40 and along and east of I-25. In addition, high instability
will also be combined with warmer than normal to near record high
temperatures.

The upper level trough to our west responsible for the potentially
persistent and extended period of critical fire weather conditions
isn't forecast to eject through the Great Basin and into CO until
late next week. Therefore daily occurrences of widespread critical
conditions are possible Tuesday through Thursday and even into next
weekend in the wake of the departing trough. Low level moisture may
slosh back and forth into far eastern NM from TX Tuesday through
Thursday where a few thunderstorms are possible but that
doesn't help much.
