The backdoor front that moved through eastern NM last night will
continue to push west and northwest into the Rio Grande Valley this
afternoon and evening. A return southeasterly low level flow will
continue across central and especially eastern NM tonight with areas
of IFR conditions possible east slopes of the central mountain
chain, and potentially along and near the TX border. Areas of
sprinkles are forecast to develop over south-central areas late
tonight, then become more widespread over southeast and east- central
portions of the forecast area Tuesday morning. Much stronger west
winds will develop all locations Tuesday.

.SYNOPSIS...
A weak ridge of high pressure will be over NM today bringing us
sunshine and warm temperatures, and finally a break from the strong
winds, though it will be breezy to locally windy in the east. The
surface winds are turning to the east and southeast today, delivering
low level moisture into eastern NM, along with cooler temperatures.
With less wind and higher humidity, critical fire weather conditions
will be very isolated today. But it will be short-lived as dry,
westerly winds return Tuesday and hang around the rest of the week.
Wind advisories will likely be needed Tuesday through Friday, with
locally high, potentially damaging winds Friday. The only near term
precipitation chances will be Tuesday with an isolated shower or
thunderstorm over the far east central plains near the TX border.

.DISCUSSION...
SHORT TERM...(TODAY THROUGH TUESDAY)...
With increasing high clouds, winds will generally be weaker today
than they have been with less critical fire weather conditions. Late
in the day south winds are forecast to become breezy from the east
slopes of the Sangre de Cristo mountains northeastward across
northwest Harding and much of Union Counties.  A backdoor cold front
entering the eastern plains is forecast to raise humidities some
this morning as far west as the east slopes of the Sangres.  Then, a
moist south and southeasterly low level return flow is forecast to
develop this afternoon across the east. Moisture is forecast to
become rich enough by tonight for areas of nocturnal low clouds
along the east slopes of the central mountain chain, and potentially
also across the far eastern plains. With a series of perturbations
crossing from the west, models depict some sprinkles developing
during the late night hours over south central areas, then expanding
eastward across much of the east central and southeast plains into
Tuesday morning. A few hundredths of an inch of rain accumulation is
forecast for the Caprock area and the southeast plains east of
Highway 285 late Tuesday morning into the afternoon. There may be a
few gusty thunderstorms in the mix there as well Tuesday afternoon.

West and southwest winds will strengthen significantly Tuesday.  The
strongest gusts may reach 50 mph from the western high plains
westward to the AZ border.

LONG TERM...(TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY)...
Another long duration of strong to high winds and very low humidities
are in store for much of this week and weekend. Wednesday through
Sunday will be active, with Friday exceptionally dry and windy.
Extreme fire behavior is possible Friday in the east - see below for
details. Temperatures will start out well above normal Wednesday,
then gradually lower to near or below normal over the weekend. An
upper level low will approach Friday night and cross NM Saturday
bringing a chance for precipitation across the far north. Models
continue to move the disturbance farther to the north, limiting the
precipitation chances while increasing the likelihood of strong to
high winds.

.FIRE WEATHER...
With increasing high clouds, winds will generally be weaker today
than they have been with less critical fire weather conditions. Late
in the day south winds are forecast to become breezy from the east
slopes of the Sangre de Cristo mountains northeastward across
northwest Harding and much of Union Counties, but humidities will
climb above 15 percent there as well. A somewhat moist backdoor cold
front entering the eastern plains is forecast to reach the east
slopes of the Sangres this morning. Then, a moist south and
southeasterly low level return flow is forecast to develop this
afternoon across the east. An hour or two of locally critical fire
weather conditions are still possible across the Northeast Highlands
and Sandia/Manzano and Gallinas Mountains this afternoon, especially
south of Las Vegas to around Clines Corners.

Critical fire weather conditions are then forecast to become
widespread Tuesday through the end of the week, and potentially into
Sunday, thanks to brisk and dry flow aloft and mostly well above
normal high temperatures. The strongest southwest and west winds
look to occur Tuesday and especially Friday, when gusts may exceed 60
mph along and just east of the central mountain chain. Widespread
poor humidity recovery is forecast Tuesday night. A Pacific cold
front will cross Friday with briefly below normal temperatures
Saturday. There may also be some gusty thunderstorms with light rain
over the northern mountains and westward Saturday as a disturbance
passes mainly to the north of NM.
