Incoming storm system will bring deteriorating conditions over the
next 24 hours in the form of strong winds, rain and snow. Gusty south
and southeasterly winds across eastern NM will persist for another
2-4 hours before slowly decreasing. Meanwhile, mainly snow will
continue to expand across western NM with MVFR to perhaps brief IFR
cigs possible, including around KGUP. Rain and snow showers will
expand eastward Monday with mt obscurations possible. Around 15Z Mon,
a very strong backdoor cold front will move into NE NM and will
quickly slide southward through the plains. Gusts near 50kts will be
possible behind the front as well as BLDU. Areas of rain and snow
will also expand along and behind the front through the afternoon
with BLSN likely. A band of rain and snow is likely to set up Monday
afternoon through Monday night stretching from north central NM to
near KROW, with continuing showers and strong winds likely across
much of eastern NM as well. Localized IFR or lower cigs and vsbys

Strong winds and fire weather concerns will continue many areas
through early this evening. A storm system will bring widespread
rain and snow showers over western areas tonight, then over more of
the forecast area Monday through Monday evening. A few to several
inches of snow accumulation are expected in the mountains, and a few
inches are also possible along the east slopes of the west central,
central, and south central mountains. Strong winds will develop with
cold fronts over western and eastern areas Monday, then continue
through Tuesday afternoon across the east. The strongest winds may
reach 60 mph over far northeast and east central areas Monday
afternoon and night. A few to several inches of additional snow
accumulation will be possible with a trailing disturbance on Tuesday
and Tuesday night in the southern Sangre de Cristo, Jemez, Sandia,
Manzano, and Sacramento mountains, with an inch or so possible around
Santa Fe, Clines Corners, Moriarty, and Ruidoso. The latter half of
the week will bring warmer, drier, and less windy weather as a ridge
of high pressure crosses from the west.

.DISCUSSION...
SHORT TERM...(TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT)...
Strengthening diffluent flow aloft is moving into NM, and
cyclogenesis has already ensued over AZ. Water vapor imagery
indicates the southernmost vort lobe is treking southeastward, and
this will clearly yield a track considerably farther south than what
deterministic models indicated just 24 hours ago. This should keep
strong south southwest winds going through the early evening,
perhaps backing 10 to 20 degrees more than what was earlier
advertised. Clearing is also underway over the middle Rio Grande
valley, and this will keep vertical mixing and consequential gusts
persisting into the early evening. There will also be chance for a
few showers, and perhaps a thunderstorm over northwestern NM before
dusk, and POPs will increase over western zones more overnight as
the low moves into NM. Springtime temperatures will make it tricky
as to how much snow will accumulate in western zones tonight, but
most locales under 7500 feet look to stay between 1 to 2 inches or
less with slightly higher amounts on Mount Taylor, the Zunis and a
few high peaks of the Jemez.

Into Monday, the low will continue making its jaunt south of I-40,
moving into east central and southeastern parts of the state by the
afternoon and then into west TX by Monday evening. Precipitation
rates will increase around midday when the cold front will enter
northeastern NM, providing a prominent area of frontogenetical
forcing while sufficient dynamics aloft keep rain and snow showers
going over western to central zones. Snow levels will rise upwards
of 8500 feet in some central mountain zones Monday afternoon, but
levels will be lower over the Sangre de Cristos and mixed
precipitation will be observed in the far northeastern zones as
diabatic cooling causes readings to plummet into the afternoon.
Winds will be screaming in many zones, particularly over the
northwestern plateau and the northeastern plains. The northeastern
plains are advertised to host a packing of isobars at the surface
(10 to 12 mb across Union and Quay counties alone), and a High Wind
Watch has been issued to account for this. The warmer temperatures
above freezing prior to the front will likely make it difficult for
snow to accumulate in much of the area in these counties, but
northern Union county could observe cold enough readings to support
blowing snow and perhaps brief white out conditions, especially
Monday evening. Higher confidence exists over the Raton Pass where
the Winter Storm Watch has been upgraded to a Warning.

The northerly winds will stay strong in the eastern plains (and
especially in the northeastern zones) throughout Monday night. An
area of surface convergence may keep some light to moderate showers
going over central to south central zones Monday evening, and this
might be a period when the Winter Weather Advisory will need to be
expanded.

LONG TERM...(TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY)...
Tuesday through Tuesday night, additional shortwave energy will dive
southward over the forecast area behind the exiting storm system
causing an upper level trough to linger over the state with a chance
for additional rain and snow showers. Models are now showing an
increase in snow accumulation during this period in the Jemez
Mountains and southward from the southern Sangre de Cristos across
the Sandias, Manzanos, and Sacramento Mountains, with a few to
several inches of snow accumulation possible. The highest amounts may
reach 8 inches on the high peaks of the southern Sangres. Lighter
amounts of an inch or so will be possible around Santa Fe, Moriarty,
Clines Corners, Gran Quivira, and Ruidoso. Meanwhile, north winds
will continue to blow across the eastern plains, and also across the
Chuska Mountains and northwest plateau, where gusts up to 55 mph will
again be possible. Blowing snow may impact northeast and east central
areas that have fresh snow on the ground Tuesday morning. Drier areas
of the east will probably experience blowing dusts in the afternoon.
The strong winds are forecast to diminish with sunset Tuesday
evening.

After high temperatures around 5-22 degrees below normal on Tuesday,
a broad ridge of high pressure will develop over the western US
causing readings to rebound Wednesday through the end of the week.
Highs should reach near and above normal areawide starting Friday.

.FIRE WEATHER...

Critical conditions are ongoing over much of central to eastern NM,
but these should abate into the early evening once winds begin
subsiding and humidity starts to recover.

Into Monday, the forecast continues to call for a strong low
pressure system that will track across NM, bringing colder
temperatures and areas of rain and snow to many portions of the
forecast area of northern and central NM. Snow accumulations are
expected in the mountains with generally light to moderate amounts,
and scattered areas of wetting rainfall are forecast in lower
elevations. In addition to the precipitation, much cooler air will
arrive, helping to keep RH elevated above critical levels. Strong to
perhaps severe winds will accompany the low pressure system,
especially on Monday into Tuesday, however no critical fire weather
is expected due to the arrival of the cooler temperatures and
increase in humidity. Precipitation will hang around through
Tuesday, but drier conditions on Wednesday will allow temperatures
to finally start climbing toward or slightly above normal toward
Thursday. This will cause humidity to fall again by Thursday and
Friday, but fortunately strong winds are not anticipated.
