Gusty winds will diminish with sunset this evening in most places,
except over the southern high terrain including KSRR, where winds
will remain gusty as the flow aloft strengthens ahead of an upper
level low pressure system approaching from the west. Gusty winds will
return areawide on Wednesday by early afternoon. Scattered to
isolated rain showers and thunderstorms, and mountain snow showers,
will move over western areas Wednesday morning, and eventually as
far east as the central mountain chain by late Wednesday afternoon.
West of the continental divide the coverage may become numerous
Wednesday afternoon. Precipitation will spread to more of the
forecast area Wednesday night as the upper level low pressure system
moves directly over the state.

.SYNOPSIS...
The overall weather pattern will be more active through the middle of
next week as a series of storms impact New Mexico. The first storm
arrives Wednesday, followed quickly by a second, weaker system
Thursday. After a break from Friday through Sunday, two more storms
will take aim at the land of Enchantment from late Monday through
Thursday. Focusing on the first two storms, they will bring
precipitation to much of the area, with the most over the western and
northern mountains. Valley rain and mountain snow Wednesday will turn
to mostly snow Wednesday night into Thursday. Temperatures will turn
sharply colder both days, thanks to a strong back door cold front
Wednesday night. Highs will end up well below normal by Thursday,
especially in the east.

.DISCUSSION...
SHORT TERM...(TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY)...
Wind guidance for today has definitely been lower than observed
values this afternoon for many areas, including Las Vegas, Clines
Corners and especially the Ruidoso airport. Stronger mountain top
winds will traverse portions of the Southwest Mountains, Lower RGV,
South Central Mountains and into the Southeast and East Central
Plains tonight and Wednesday. Went ahead with a Wind Advisory
extending into Wednesday for that general area, although the South
Central Mountains may see High Wind Criteria later tonight as the
12Z NAM and HREF indicate at least 50-60kts at 700 mb over this
area. The strong southwest winds will diminish by early Wednesday
evening, then a cold front will surge into eastern New Mexico
Wednesday night, with northerly winds gusting to around 50 or 55
mph, and where a Wind Advisory may eventually be necessary. This
front will bring cooler than normal air and will help produce, along
with a second disturbance, some light snow accumulations along the
central mountain chain and northern mountains Wednesday night.
Otherwise, showers will approach the region from the west on
Wednesday with some light snow accumulations along the western
mountains, and areas of blowing dust possible in the east. Daytime
highs Wednesday will be cooler overall but still 5 to 10 degrees
above normal over the plains. As snow amounts likely won't reach
advisory levels for many locales, a Special Weather Statement will
be issued for the incoming weather changes.

LONG TERM...(THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY)...
The second short wave trough will slowly cross NM Thursday from
northwest to southeast, with precipitation gradually diminishing as
drier air gets entrained into the system. Precipitation will mostly
fall as snow Thursday, thanks to the passage of a strong cold front
on Wednesday night. Highs Thursday will range from five to near 20
degrees below normal, with the east most impacted. We will get a
break from Friday through Monday with dry and milder weather. Highs
Monday will be above normal by 5 to 15 degrees. Two more storms will
impact the state, the first will be a glancing blow across the
northwest Monday into Tuesday, with a second, more potent system for
Wednesday through Thursday.

...Critical Fire Weather Continues Through 6 PM MST...
...Critical Fire Weather Conditions Wednesday East Central Plains...

Widespread critical conditions this afternoon are expected to
diminish after sunset, although strong southwest winds at mountain
top levels will persist across areas south of I-40 and over portions
of the eastern plains tonight and into Wednesday. Combined with
continued low humidities, above normal temperatures and an unstable
airmass, a Red Flag Warning is in effect for the East Central Plains
from 11 AM to 6 PM MST Wednesday.

Elsewhere, temperatures will be trending cooler and humidities will
be increasing Wednesday through Thursday. Accumulating snow is
possible mainly over the western mountains Wednesday and for the
northern and central mountain chain Wednesday night and Thursday.
Snow amounts are forecast to remain relatively light. North winds
associated with a strong cold front may gust to around 50 mph
Wednesday night and Thursday morning over the eastern plains,
leading to cooler than normal highs Thursday. Thereafter a warming
trend begins Friday and continues through the upcoming weekend.
Afternoon breezes may bring spotty critical conditions to the
eastern plains Sunday afternoon.

...WINTER WEATHER RETURNS TO NEW MEXICO WEDNESDAY THROUGH
THURSDAY...

Two upper level disturbances will impact New Mexico in the short
term, one from the west Wednesday and the second from the northwest
Thursday. A strong back door cold front will plunge south through
the east Wednesday night with much colder air, while clouds and
precipitation will cool temperatures in the west.

Snow will begin in the western mountains Wednesday morning, and
spread east and south Wednesday afternoon in the form of mountain
snow and valley rain. Rain will change to snow Wednesday night on
the plains and valleys. Snow will linger into Thursday over and
near the central mountains. Snow totals will favor the west and
north mountains where generally 3 to 5 inches can fall. Higher
amounts of up to 8 inches could fall on the higher peaks of the
Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Valleys and lowlands could receive up
to 1 inch.

The winds will be the other story with these storms. Southwest
winds over the southwest and south central mountains will continue
strong tonight, with speeds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts to 55 mph.
Winds on Wednesday will focus over the south central highlands
across the southeast and east central plains. Speeds will average
30 to 45 mph with gusts to 60 mph.

Temperatures will drop sharply Wednesday and Thursday. A strong
back door cold front Wednesday night will blast much colder air
down eastern New Mexico Thursday. Temperatures everywhere will be
below to much below normal by Thursday
