Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Albuquerque NM 501 AM MST Tue Dec 27 2022 ...New AVIATION... .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 250 AM MST Tue Dec 27 2022 A very warm day is in store across the Land of Enchantment as high temperatures soar between 10 and 20 degrees above normal. Cooler weather will be in store for the rest of the week as a series of storm systems bring bouts of cloud cover and precipitation. The first round of precipitation is expected tonight through early Thursday with valley rain and mountain snow likely across western and central New Mexico. Several inches of snow is expected across the high terrain, which will likely result in snowpacked and icy roadways. More snow is expected Thursday night into Friday across central and western New Mexico, then a much stronger storm system may impact the state Sunday and Monday. Eastern New Mexico will largely remain dry and windy until New Year's Day when precipitation chances finally increase. Some of the strongest winds are expected along the Central Mountain Chain tonight into Wednesday with gusts between 50 and 60 mph. && .SHORT TERM... (Today through Wednesday) Issued at 250 AM MST Tue Dec 27 2022 A very active weather pattern the next 10 days will begin with an exceptionally moist storm system arriving from the west tonight. But first, a dry airmass holding onto the region today will combine with a 998mb surface low deepening over southeast CO to produce well above normal temps over eastern NM. Highs of 15 to 20F above normal will be a far cry from the arctic invasion of last week. Abundant moisture will stream into the region tonight with a powerful 125 to 135 kt speed max entering the Great Basin. Unstable upslope flow into the northern and western high terrain will combine with near- record PW values around 0.60" by Wednesday morning. Along with the deep moisture typically comes high snow levels. Confidence is high on significant QPF for west-facing slopes however confidence is low to moderate on snow levels due to waffling of thermodynamic profiles thru Wednesday afternoon. There are still higher probabilities of 8"+ above 9kft so converted the Winter Storm Watch to a Warning and added the southern Sangre de Cristo Mts where the combo of wind and snow may worsen impacts. Precip types may fluctuate btwn rain and snow below 9kft so confidence on any impactful accums is low. Winds will not only impact the central high terrain tonight but also much of eastern NM Wednesday afternoon. A larger area of Wind Advisories and perhaps a greater expansion to High Wind Warnings will be in place for Wednesday. && .LONG TERM... (Wednesday night through Monday) Issued at 250 AM MST Tue Dec 27 2022 Though much of the precipitation from the first storm system will be winding down Wednesday night, a trailing vort max will move into western NM. With colder air now in place, this should allow for additional snow to develop potentially along a band from west central to central NM. Models have been inconsistent with this feature, and are still struggling on the timing, but it does appear late Wednesday night through early Thursday morning will be favored. Meanwhile, strong westerly winds along and east of the Central Mountain Chain will very slowly decrease through sunrise or so Thursday morning. However, windy conditions will return along and east of the Central Mountain Chain Thursday afternoon, though winds will not be as strong as the night before. As has been advertised, additional storm systems will continue to impact NM through the New Year and beyond. As is typical with these wave trains, the timing and strength of each system often changes with each model run. For now, the next wave looks to cross NM Thursday night into Friday. This looks to be a quick-hitting system. Light precipitation is expected to develop across western and central NM, though this time, much of the precipitation is expected to fall as snow. Currently, amounts look to be an inch or less in most locations. After a relatively quiet Saturday, another stronger and colder storm system should impact NM Sunday and Monday. Initially, southwest flow ahead of the system will allow temperatures to warm, thus precipitation should be rain with mountain snow on Sunday, but will changeover to mostly snow by Monday as the system shifts over NM. Interestingly, models have been rather consistent with a signal for a stronger system Sunday into Monday, despite changes in the mid-range period. While western and central NM see bouts of precipitation, eastern NM will remain quite dry and rather windy until Sunday. && .AVIATION... (12Z TAFS) Issued at 450 AM MST Tue Dec 27 2022 West and southwest winds will increase today w/ gusts of 25-35 kt common across much of eastern NM. Winds will strengthen over the high terrain tonight as a moisture-laden storm system approaches from the west. Gusts of 40-50 kt are possible around the higher terrain of northern and central NM. Clouds will thicken and lower from west to east with MVFR likely across western NM aft sunset then IFR aft midnight with rain and mt snow. This activity will make it to the central mt chain before sunrise Wednesday. Low level wind shear will increase from KLVS to KTCC overnight. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 250 AM MST Tue Dec 27 2022 Marginally critical fire weather conditions will develop over parts of northeast NM today. Min RH values near 15% will accompany locally strong wind gusts near 35 mph with 6 Haines and above normal temps. Valley rain and mountain snow will move into northern and western NM tonight then spread east into central NM thru Wednesday. Warm temps will lead to high snow levels with wet snow accums. Areas above 9kft are likely to pick up greater than 6" across the north and west with strong winds. Strong winds are likely in the Sangre de Cristos into the eastern plains Wednesday where more marginally critical fire weather is possible, mainly Tucumcari to Clayton. Gusts may exceed 60 mph in some areas.
