Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Albuquerque NM 1147 AM MDT Sat Oct 22 2022 ...New AVIATION... .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 215 AM MDT Sat Oct 22 2022 A couple of storm systems will bring wind, rain and snow accumulation, and much colder temperatures during the coming week. The first storm will be the strongest with the potential for a few to 4 inches of snow accumulation above 7500 feet mostly Sunday through Monday, except up to a foot in the mountains near the Colorado border. Winds will begin strengthening today, then peak on Sunday with widespread gusts from 45 to 55 mph. The strongest winds Sunday could reach 60 mph along the central mountain chain, and across northeast and east central areas. In the wake of the first storm system a widespread hard freeze looks likely over northern, western and central areas Monday night. After a break in the weather Tuesday and Wednesday, winds look to strengthen again with the second storm system Thursday and Thursday night, but accumulating snow may be relegated to the northern mountains. && .SHORT TERM... (Today through Sunday) Issued at 215 AM MDT Sat Oct 22 2022 The polar jet takes a big dive southward today, setting into motion a sharp weather change for NM with windy and unsettled conditions. The other notable feature aloft is the cut-off low over open Pacific waters, due west of the Baja peninsula. The fate of this feature and its how the polar jet kicks it inland has been a hot topic of late with fickle run-to-run solutions from forecast models. Latest guidance suggests it will become phased with the sharply developing longwave trough over the western ConUS into Sunday. Currently, and prior to this phasing, the subtropical jet is already dragging stronger zonal flow over NM. This along with a strengthening lee- side surface trough, deep vertical mixing, and perhaps some weak mountain wave activity will induce windy conditions today, mainly along and east of the Sangre de Cristos and over the central highlands. Have expanded the wind advisory for today to add this central highlands zone and the east central plains (Santa Rosa to Tucumcari). There is some faint subtropical moisture being drawn up ahead of the cut-off low via the jet, and surface dewpoints and mid level moisture should escalate (particularly over the southern half of the forecast area) through the day with a few showers and thunderstorms taking shape over the southwestern and south central mountains late in the afternoon. Likely driven more by orographics and perhaps some weak large scale ascent with the approaching northern stream trough, a few showers and storms will also be possible in the northern mountains with both southern and northern mountain areas likely becoming a bit more active tonight as moisture and lift increase over the former (southern) and latter (northern) zones of the forecast area. While the boundary layer will be able to decouple in lower elevation areas this evening, the gradient aloft will lend to continued windy conditions over the Sangre de Cristos tonight. The gradient aloft will only increase into the daytime Sunday with the surface gradient tightening as well as the surface low bottoms out east of the front range and into the central plains. Many areas along and east of the Sangre de Cristos look to reach near or even exceed high wind criteria, so a High Wind Watch will be issued for Sunday for these areas and also the central highlands and south central mountains. While these areas are getting buffeted by high winds, precipitation will increase and become concentrated along the baroclinic zone stretching from west central to north central NM. Instability will be a mixed bag, but a few weak thunderstorms will be possible in this area with snow levels starting to lower (reaching 9,000 to 9,500 ft in northern mountains by Sunday afternoon) as cold air advection ensues. && .LONG TERM... (Sunday night through Friday) Issued at 215 AM MDT Sat Oct 22 2022 An upper level trough is now forecast to form a closed upper level low pressure system over the forecast area as it crosses from the northwest Sunday night and Monday. The entire area will have a chance for rain and/or snow showers, but the best chance is forecast over southern and eastern areas. Strong Pacific and backdoor cold fronts will cross Sunday night into Monday morning dropping the snow level as low as 6000 feet, with freezing temperatures across most of the northern and western portions of the forecast area. A few additional inches of snow are expected in the mountains, with under an inch in most lower elevation locations. This should bring storm total accumulations (Saturday night through Monday) to a few to 4 inches mainly above 7500 feet, except 4-10 inches with locally higher amounts in the northern mountains near the CO border. Sunday's strong winds will gradually weaken Sunday night with gusts over 50 mph lingering over the central mountain chain through the evening, and potentially into the late night hours over the south central mountains as the polar jet stream continues to cross that area. The wind will blow and drift the snow, especially along the central mountain chain. High temperatures are forecast to bottom out Monday around 13-23 degrees below normal, then low temperatures will bottom out Monday night with a widespread hard freeze. At this time, it looks like the only places that may not freeze early Tuesday morning will be along and south of a line from Santa Rosa to Clovis, and potentially also pockets of Albuquerque's northeast heights, if cold air advection in northwest flow can weaken enough during the late night hours for a temperature inversion to set up in the Rio Grande Valley. Dry weather is expected Tuesday and Wednesday, and temperatures are forecast to rebound as the flow over NM becomes more zonal. Highs may peak Wednesday a few to around 7 degrees below normal. Winds will be gusty, especially Wednesday, as the flow aloft strengthens ahead of a new upper level trough digging over the northwest US. The operational runs of the GFS and ECMWF are in fairly good agreement that the upper level trough will form a closed upper level low pressure system as it tracks southeastward over the northeast third of NM Thursday afternoon and night. If this track pans out, another wind event is likely Thursday and Thursday night as the polar jet stream and a sharp Pacific cold front cross the forecast area. Western and south central parts of the forecast area may again observe wind gusts to 50 mph, and potentialy 60 mph along and just east of the central mountain chain where 700 mb speeds again look to top 50 kt. The Thursday system does not look to have as much moisture with it as the early week storm system, with recent model runs keeping most of the wetting precipitation along and north of I-40. The northern mountains will probably be favored for a few to several inches of fresh snow accumulation by early Friday morning, then conditions look to improve as the storm system exits to the southeast. High temperatures on Friday may be held to 5-10 degrees below normal. && .AVIATION... (18Z TAFS) Issued at 1139 AM MDT Sat Oct 22 2022 Windy weather is forecast for the weekend. The stronger gusts of 35 to 50 kt will impact KCQC, KLVS, KRTN and KSRR this afternoon. Wdly sct showers and thunderstorms will also be possible this afternoon into the evening, mainly over the northern and southern mountains of the state with brief downpours and the usual small hail, gusty wind enhancements and lightning threats. Brisk southwest winds continue all areas overnight and increase Sunday morning with widespread strong to high winds forecast Sunday. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 215 AM MDT Sat Oct 22 2022 A much more active and dynamic weather pattern will unfold this weekend. Windy conditions will pose a risk of marginal critical fire weather conditions today in far northeastern NM (Union county) for a few hours this afternoon. This will be the primary area of concern where humidity will be lowest (15-20 percent) due to warming effects from downsloping winds, but windy conditions will expand elsewhere today to include the broader northeastern quadrant and central highlands of NM. A few showers and thunderstorms will also be possible late this afternoon, first over the northern and southern mountains before increasing and trying to meet more centrally over the state tonight. Winds will strengthen more statewide into Sunday with the northeastern quadrant of NM bearing the brunt of the strongest gusts of 50 to 60 mph. Cooling temperatures and slightly higher humidity in this area should lower the critical fire weather risk, but the high winds will remain a threat nonetheless. Precipitation becomes more committed on Sunday, stretching along the leading edge of cooler air from west central to north central NM with some high elevation snow beginning. Cooler air will continue overtaking the state into Monday with precipitation becoming less intense while shifting eastward, and breezy to windy conditions will linger, having shifted more northwesterly.
