VFR conditions prevail with mid to high clouds streaming across the
area through the TAF period. Upper-level northwest winds will begin
to strengthen tonight which will likely result in low-level wind
speed shear for most TAF sites across western and central NM between
about 03Z and 13Z. Winds aloft will continue to strengthen tomorrow,
and these winds mixing down to the surface will result in widespread
windy conditions beginning between 15Z and 17Z and continuing
thereafter.

.PREV DISCUSSION...240 AM MDT Mon Apr 4 2022...
.SYNOPSIS...
Canyon winds in the Rio Grande Valley will taper off this morning.
Gusty sprinkles and a few rain showers are possible over northern
and western NM through this afternoon. A powerful storm system will
move north of NM Tuesday and spread very strong northwest winds over
the region. Gusts of 60 to 70 mph are possible over the high terrain
of northern and central NM with gusts of 50 mph in many other areas.
Significant blowing dust and difficult travel is expected. Dangerous
fire weather conditions are also likely with very low humidity, warm
temperatures, and high winds. Strong northwest winds will continue
Wednesday but gusts will peak around 45 to 55 mph. Dangerous fire
weather conditions will continue with exceptionally dry air moving
into the area. Widespread freezing temperatures are expected in the
wake of this system Wednesday night and Thursday night with lighter
winds. Much warmer temperatures will return Thursday through Sunday
with increasing winds each day.

.DISCUSSION...
SHORT TERM...(TODAY THROUGH TUESDAY)...
Latest model guidance continues to show the strong east canyon winds
into the Rio Grande Valley tapering off around or shortly before
sunrise. Scattered showers and an isolated thunderstorm or two
remain possible near the CO border until around noon or so before
dissipating. Additionally, a few instability showers may develop
over the southwest mountains during the afternoon before ending
around sunset. Northwest winds aloft increase markedly overnight, as
a 140kt northwesterly jet stream noses into western CO and far
northwest NM. The nocturnal increase in winds will keep low
temperatures above to well average tonight most areas but especially
mountains. By Tuesday morning, northwest winds in the higher
elevations of western and central NM approach high wind speed
criteria, continuing through the day and into the evening hours. A
High Wind Watch has been issued for these areas as a result with
wind advisories likely needed for surrounding locations. Areas of
blowing dust will be in the mix for many areas Tuesday afternoon.

LONG TERM...(TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY)...
Strong NW winds will persist thru late Tuesday evening until the
potent jet max shifts far enough east into the Great Plains. The
sfc pressure gradient will slowly relax as well as high pressure
builds south from CO.

NW winds will crank up again Wednesday as a secondary 130 kt jet max
enters the central Rockies. A strong cold front will slide thru NM
with an exceptionally dry airmass. Widespread negative dewpoints are
expected with much cooler high temps compared to Tuesday. Mid level
winds have been trending downward on the past couple model runs but
speeds still support Wind Advisory from near KFMN to KABQ and KCQC.
Gusts may approach 60 mph at KCQC which is typical for strong NW
flow. Blowing dust is expected once again with source regions from
the Four Corners.

Winds will taper off more quickly Wednesday night as stronger high
pressure moves into NM. Very dry air, light winds, and clear skies
will help strong radiational cooling favor widespread freezing temps
Thursday morning. Average spring freeze dates are right about now in
a few areas so any early-season gardeners should prepare to protect
tender vegetation. This will be the case Thursday night as well with
strong radiational cooling again.

Max temps rebound very quickly Thursday and Friday with delightful
weather in store. Winds look to begin strengthening again Saturday
and Sunday ahead of another unseasonably strong storm system moving
onto the West Coast.

southwest mountains during the afternoon. Drier weather moves in
tonight through Thursday. Widespread critical fire weather
conditions are forecast Tuesday afternoon and early evening as
strong to damaging northwest winds develop due to an upper low
pressure system passing to the north of NM. The strong winds will
focus over portions of western and central NM Wednesday afternoon.
Critical conditions may continue into Thursday afternoon in far
northeast and far northwest portions of the state where brisk
northwest winds continue to combine with a very dry airmass.

The strong winds finally diminish Friday as a ridge of high pressure
builds in from the west. The ridge slides east of NM Saturday with a
lee side trough and southwest breezes picking up. Southwest winds
are forecast to increase further Sunday.
