.SYNOPSIS...Snow chances will end over Mohave County tonight, and
then the next storm will bring more chances for rain and snow to
much of the Mojave Desert and southern Great Basin Wednesday and
Thursday. Some low elevation snowfall is not out of the question.
Even colder temperatures are likely for the first few days of 2022,
with a few days of dry weather expected.

.SHORT TERM...through Thursday night. Very impressive midday
satellite loop, with several layers of clouds and so many waves in
them that it would take too long to separate and identify them all.
Surface obs showed west winds gusting near 40 mph in the Barstow
area and lighter winds elsewhere, with temperatures just a bit below
normal in the climatologically coldest week of the year for much of
our region. The ongoing Winter Weather Advisory for Mohave County
hasn't panned out yet, but lower clouds were bubbling from Bullhead
City through Colorado City, and radar returns were beginning to
increase as well. Colorado City's wetbulb temperature was in the mid
30s, which could support wet snow, so will not cancel the Advisory.
Once this storm system moves away to the east tonight, attention
turns to the next one in the train, which was just off the WA/OR
coast today and heading south. By Wednesday afternoon, the low
should be centered near or just offshore of San Francisco, with a
moisture plume being directed into southern California. This plume
will bring precipitable water over half an inch into the southeast
half to two thirds of our area, supporting rain and snow.
Differentiating between the two has been tough. The precip could
begin as snow in many lower elevation locations, including Las
Vegas, in the late morning before changing to rain as snow levels
rise in the afternoon in response to warm advection (the
aforementioned plume is of warm origin). This makes snow forecasting
a headache. Interstate 15 at Mountain Pass will likely see at least
an inch of snow before the changeover occurs, and Highway 95 in
southern Nye County could see snow changing to rain Wednesday
afternoon changing back to snow Thursday night. The greatest concern
with this forecast is the snow level - if the warm advection raises
the snow level less than forecast, and snow levels stay ~500 feet
lower than expected, impacts on major highways could be much worse
than forecast. Based on the current expectations, cancelled the
Winter Storm Watch for the Sierra, Owens Valley, and White Mountains
of Inyo County, as the best moisture and greatest snow totals will
remain southeast of those areas. Upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning
for Death Valley National Park above 4500 feet, with heavy snow most
likely in the Panamint Mountains. For Esmeralda and central Nye,
upgraded to a Winter Weather Advisory, as this area will be just on
the edge of the best moisture, so snow totals will not be as
impressive as areas farther south and east. Upgraded Lincoln County,
the Spring Mountains, the Sheep Range, and northern Mohave County to
Winter Storm Warnings, where residence time in the moisture plume
will be maximized and orographic lift will enhance snow. Wednesday
night and Thursday, the main low will dig southwest of Point
Conception, and the rain and snow band will slowly sag southeast
across our area. As the low reaches its southernmost point and turns
east toward the northern Baja Thursday night, easterly flow around
its northern semicircle could pull the rain and snow back to the
west a bit, as well as enhance snow on the east facing side of the
Spring Mountains.

.LONG TERM...Friday through Monday.

On Friday, the next weather system of interest slides into the
Intermountain West. This system will feature a more continental
trajectory, though, with some residual moisture lingering it could
spark a few light showers as well, particularly as it drags a
surface cold front through the region in the evening hours. This
will be followed by gusty north winds behind the front ushering in a
chilly Canadian airmass to start off the new year. If you have plans
to revel in New Year's Eve festivities outdoors, you'll want to
bundle up.

Thereafter, high pressure ridging will begin to take hold from the
remainder of the weekend into at least the start of next week.
Temperatures will be on the cool side with widespread below freezing
temperatures in the mornings, but with mostly clear skies.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Winds have diminished this afternoon
and will generally remain in a southwest direction around 7 kts or
less. Residual low level moisture will maintain a layer of scattered
clouds around 6-7 kft AGL, occasionally becoming broken. Mountains
generally obscured this afternoon and evening by clouds and light
showers. Do expect cloud coverage to diminish overnight. Clouds are
expected to lower Wednesday morning once again to around 5k feet
with the potential of seeing light rain or snow between 14-17Z
followed by all rain by late morning and afternoon. CIGS may lower
to 3k feet or less at times.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Residual low level moisture will generate SCT-BKN050-
080 across the region today. Isolated to scattered light RA/SN
showers developing mainly over the higher terrain of southeast
Nevada and northwest Arizona this afternoon and evening. Winds will
continue to diminish over most areas this afternoon with speeds
generally less than 10 kts. West winds will remain elevated with
gusts to around 30 kts through 22z before diminishing. Lowering CIGS
and scattered rain and snow showers are expected most areas
Wednesday with CIGS as low as 1-3k feet along with widespread
mountain obscurations.
