Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 142 AM PDT Sun Sep 5 2021 .SYNOPSIS...Dry weather and seasonably warm temperatures expected through the holiday weekend and start of the work week before moisture brings a return of showers and thunderstorms late-week. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Wednesday. Dry conditions and increasing temperatures will continue through the weekend and start of the work week, as an area of high pressure centers over Nevada today. Temperatures will climb to 8-12 degrees above seasonal averages by Tuesday before an increase of monsoonal moisture drops them on Wednesday. Excessive Heat Watches have been upgraded to Excessive Heat Warnings for Monday and Tuesday across southeastern California, far southern Nevada, and the Colorado River Valley. In addition, several zones were added to an elevation-based Excessive Heat Warning under 4500 feet: northern Mohave County, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, and southern Clark County. Studies show that there are higher rates of heat-related illness toward the end of the season due to months of regulating body temperature from extreme heat. Additionally, this weekend is Labor Day weekend, notorious for outdoor recreation due to being the "last weekend of summer". This will likely result in an influx of folks traveling from out of town, who are potentially unaccustomed to the desert heat. Tourist hot spots reaching or exceeding "High" HeatRisk include Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, Laughlin, Death Valley National Park, Lake Mead National Recreation Area including Lake Mohave, and Lake Havasu. If recreating or spending excess time outdoors, it is recommended to drink plenty of water - even if you're not thirsty, and especially if consuming caffeine or alcohol. Uncertainty remains regarding how much monsoonal moisture will push into the region on Wednesday. After coordinating with neighboring National Weather Service offices, decided to hold off on issuing additional heat-related products for Wednesday. The ECMWF ensemble members are in good intra-model agreement, but GEFS ensemble members continue to work out moisture timing. Should the Excessive Heat Warning need to be extended, it is likely that it would only be for the northern zones where moisture will have a delayed onset. .LONG TERM...Thursday through Saturday. High pressure will shift east and reorient itself over the Four Corners region by Thursday and Friday, while a weak trough develops along the West Coast. This will leave our forecast area situated in a southerly flow regime and open the door for another round of monsoonal moisture to return to the region. PoPs increase in northwest Arizona Wednesday evening before spreading across the entire region Thursday and Friday. As the flow shifts more southwesterly over the weekend, thunderstorm chances will begin to shift east, but lingering terrain driven storm chances will continue in the higher elevations. With the increased moisture, temperatures will moderate closer to seasonal normals, perhaps 1-3 degrees above the daily normal averages, but far from the excessive levels earlier in the week. && .AVIATION...For McCarran...Wind speeds will generally stay 6 knots or less through tonight, though occasional an easterly direction will be possible in the afternoon hours and a more definitive southwest direction overnight. No operationally significant cloud cover. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...Wind speeds generally less 10 knots can be expected across the Mojave Desert and southern Great Basin through tonight. The exception is at KBIH where southeast gusts of 15-20 kts are possible this afternoon.
