.SYNOPSIS...An area of high pressure begins to build into the Mojave
Desert to start the week and will be the main weather maker for the
next several days. Temperatures will be trending upward through mid
week and are expected to reach excessively hot levels over portions
of the area on Tuesday and Wednesday. Other than some isolated
thunderstorms today, conditions are expected to be dry through

.UPDATE...Mainly clear skies across the area today with a few
cumulus clouds already forming over the mountains. The latest
hires models continue to forecast a drying trend today with high
pressure building over the region. Thunderstorm coverage today
will be isolated and mainly tied to the higher terrain of Lincoln,
Clark and portions of Mohave counties. Storms should be less
efficient rain producers but just enough moisture remains for a
few cells to produce brief heavy rain. Otherwise, expect warmer
conditions with high temperatures around 5 degrees warmer than
yesterday or right around normal for this time of year.

.PREVIOUSLY ISSUED DISCUSSION...

.SHORT TERM...Some minor convective activity was diminishing in
Esmeralda County overnight with only some scattered clouds lingering
across Esmeralda and central Nye Counties. Drier and more stable air
continues to work its way across the forecast area. The latest HREF
indicates just enough moisture and instability across eastern
Lincoln and Mohave Counties for a few lingering showers or
thunderstorms on Monday. The best opportunity will be in the early
afternoon. Elsewhere, expect mostly dry conditions with some cumulus
developing over the high terrain.

Otherwise, a ridge of high pressure will begin to build into the
area, peaking in strength on Wednesday when it will be centered over
the Colorado River Valley. Temperatures will be trending steadily
higher over the next few days. The most anomalous temperatures will
be found over portions of southern California, which is reflected in
the latest ECMWF Ensemble EFI values. As the ridge builds and the
surface temperatures respond an Excessive Heat Watch has been issued
for our southern San Bernardino County zones and the Colorado River
Valley zones on Tuesday. The Excessive Heat Watch expands to include
the northwest deserts of Mohave County, the Las Vegas Valley and
southern Nye County on Wednesday. Temperatures will be nearing

.LONG TERM...Thursday through the Weekend.

The ensembles are in good agreement through Wednesday, but by
Thursday and there some minor differences that may have some impact
on how long the heat will last. The main difference is how some of
the ensemble members are handling an approaching shortwave that will
be moving onshore in northern California on Thursday. About half of
the ensemble members have the approaching trough a bit deeper, and
provide more dampening of the ridge. However, the trough will also
provide some additional mixing and enhancing the potential to
maximize temperatures. There is some potential for the Excessive
Heat products to be extended into Thursday for some zones but with
the uncertainty will leave any zones out for now.

By Friday the ridge pushes to the east and is centered over New
Mexico. This will open the door for a return of moisture as the flow
turns more to the southeast across Arizona. Long range ensembles do
indicate at moisture beginning to creep back in later Friday and
continuing to increase over the weekend. At this point the GEFS is a
little more bullish with the moisture increase than the ECMWF
ensemble members. The best potential for thunderstorms are across

.AVIATION...For McCarran...Light winds favoring typical diurnal
patterns are expected today with just a few clouds in the afternoon
around 10kft AGL. No thunderstorm activity is expected in the region
today with an extended dry spell expected to last through the week.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Some southeasterly breezes are possible at KBIH in the
afternoon, as well as the typical breezy evening westerly winds at
KDAG. But otherwise, light winds are expected across the region with
dry conditions and just a few afternoon cumulus clouds developing
