Water vapor imagery depicts a shortwave trough pushing through
NE, within a broad upper trough over much of the CONUS. The next
upper wave to affect our region is currently over northern Canada.
Skies are mostly cloudy over the southern half of the CWA, and
sunny across the north. At the surface, winds are northwesterly
5-15 kts, and temperatures are warming into the 40s and 50s.
Warmer air will move into the region ahead of the approaching cold
front on Sunday. Highs are expected to reach the 50s and lower 60s
by mid-afternoon, before the cold front plunges through the region
late afternoon and evening. Lowered temps across the north. A period
of gusty north-northeast winds will be possible with the front
(pressure rises immediately behind the front expected to be 3-5
mb/3 hr and CAA will be strong); however, 850 mb winds behind the
front are progged to be only around 20-30 kts, so not expecting a
high wind event with this front. The main focus will be the
associated snowfall. Forecast soundings show moistening profiles
Sunday evening through Monday morning (earliest across the
northern Black Hills), and with plenty of low-level forcing along
the front, beneath upper divergence along the right entrance
region of the jet streak, conditions will be favorable for some
beneficial precipitation. Ensemble and deterministic models
indicate a quarter to a half inch of QPF possible with this
system, with the potential for more over the northern Black Hills.
Starting out as a rain/snow mix, precipitation will become all
snow overnight. A few inches of accumulation will be possible on
the plains, but will depend on how much sticks. The colder Black
Hills will be more likely to receive significant snow
accumulations, although with winds not very strong, Froude number
isn't indicative of a strong upslope signature. However, weak
instability on Monday could cause some snow showers to linger over
the Black Hills longer. Northeasterly winds could result in
upslope enhancement over the northeastern foothills. Added the
Spearfish/Sturgis foothills to the watch for the potential of 6+
inches of snow there. Thinking advisories will eventually be
needed for areas surrounding the Black Hills and northeastern WY.
Weston County may see a local snow maximum due to downstream
convergence there.
The cold airmass will settle over the region through the early next
week, with highs only in the 30s and lower 40s. Lingering moisture
and upper-level energy may result in additional snow showers through
Tuesday. Added some more PoPs to the forecast. Temperatures will
warm slightly Wed/Thu, but the latest GFS and Canadian are falling
in line with the ECMWF, bringing a cold front through for Friday.
Ensemble spread for temperatures next weekend is large.
