09z surface analysis had high over the upper Midwest with weak
ridging over the CWA. Water vapour had upper low moving into
southern CA with upper ridge over the CWA, but there was a weak
impulse over southern WY which was creating some clouds and light
precipitation into the southern reaches of the CWA. Main concern
this forecast is CA upper low.
Today/tonight, upper low moves to the four corners region by 12z
Saturday. Upper trough will push into WY. Low pops warranted for
aforementioned weak impulse and trough tonight. Temperatures will
be near guidance.
Saturday, upper low drifts eastward as upper ridge shifts east of
the area. Increasing clouds and pops expected, but thermal profiles
and near guidance forecast highs suggest mostly rain.
Saturday night into Monday, upper low spins into the central plains
with surface low wrapping up over eastern CO and then moving into
southeast KS. This is pretty far south conceptually for a big
precipitation event over the CWA. Deterministic guidance is
coming into better agreement with strong moisture transport
northwestward into the CWA along inverted surface trough feature.
NAM furthest north with epic snowfall predicted. GFS furthest
south and warmest. EC has been trending northward with heavier
precipitation, but seems to be most logical. Well-defined
deformation zone coupled with strong low level frontogenesis will
create strong lift over the southern half of the CWA. Precipitation
type a challenge due to Td/s in the 30s being drawn into the
system. Wet bulb zeros portray slower changeover on the SD plains
compared to the Black Hills and parts of northeast WY. A very
tight precipitation gradient due to 1042mb high over central SK
which will be funneling drier air into the northern half of the
CWA. Probabilistic guidance indicates increasing chances of 6"+
of wet heavy snow over the southwest third of the CWA and thus,
will expand winter storm watches to account. 12"+ chances over the
Black Hills are increasing. Needless to say, uncertainty exists
for the northern extent of the heaviest snow as well as the
rain/snow line. Temperatures will be near guidance outside of the
heavy snow and below guidance where the heavy snow potential
exists.
Tuesday/Wednesday, unsettled weather expected as main upper low
weakens and moves east and another upper trough approaches. Not a
whole lot of moisture to work with, so PoPs on the lower end.
Temperatures will be modulated heavily by snow on the ground.
End of next week, drier weather returns with a low warming trend.
