.DISCUSSION...(This Evening Through Thursday)

Current surface map places deep low over western Lake Superior.
Tight pressure gradient continues to bring strong winds across
the plains of western South Dakota...with widespread gusts of
60-70mph. Strong winds will continue through this evening as
backside surface trof rotates through the forecast area. After
current warnings expire, extended period of advisory criteria
winds will linger especially over eastern portions of the forecast
area. Surface high builds into the western Dakotas Friday. Steep
lapse rates/mixing will allow for gusty winds in the morning/early
afternoon.
Warm advection kicks in Friday night, with mild temperatures on
Saturday. Right exit region of 135kt jet streak and marginal low-
mid level moisture may be enough to support some light shower
activity Friday night/Saturday. Jet Streak/shortwave dives
through the Northern Plains late Saturday with surface cold front
crossing the forecast area Saturday afternoon. A period of strong
northwest winds expected behind the front with 4-6mb/3hr pressure
rises, 850 mb winds over 40kts and steep low level lapse rates.
NBM gives 80-90% probability of gusts >41kts for much of western
South Dakota with area of 50-60% probability of gusts >48kts in
wind corridor from K2WX-KRAP.
Flat Ridge will allow for nice warmup Monday/Tuesday with highs in
the 60s. NBM 75th-90th percentile suggest highs in the low 70s
are possible for Tuesday...but that will be highly dependent on
amount of sunshine and arrival of cold front. Another round of
gusty northwest winds is expected behind the front Tuesday
afternoon into Wednesday.

Strong winds will continue into this evening, gradually decreasing
overnight, but still remaining breezy into Friday morning. Breezy
winds (20-30 kts with gusts to 45 kts) will persist longest
across central SD, through Friday afternoon.
MVFR ceilings will continue pushing into the western SD plains
and possibly northern Black Hills area tonight. South central SD
may see some light precipitation and reduced visibilities.
Conditions will improve to VFR across the area Friday morning.
