Current radar loop shows precipitation out ahead of our strong
winter system in northeastern Wyoming and some isolated showers
just entering far western South Dakota this morning. Areas in
Campbell county have been seeing light snow over the last few
hours, while any precipitation to the east of there has been a
mix or rain so far. Precipitation should remain light to moderate
for much of today, but expect that to pick up tonight into
Wednesday as this strong storm strengthens and makes its way into
the northern plains. Widespread moderate to heavy precipitation
can be expected throughout the forecast area. QPF amounts in
excess of 3 inches are not out of the question for some
locations, and much of the region should see at least 1 inch.
Precipitation type will depend mostly on location, with
northeastern Wyoming and the Black Hills region having a high
probability of significant snowfall this morning through Thursday
morning. Accumulations of 1-2 feet may be possible in some areas,
specifically Campbell county and the northern Black Hills.
While most of the snow will be localized to these regions, plains
areas in far western SD may also see some snow, or at least a
rain/snow mix over the colder hours. Any expected snowfall amounts
should be low for these areas, but areas west of Highway 85 over
Harding and Butte Counties may see 3-6 inches possible, depending
how temperatures trend Wednesday.
Strong winds will be another concern for mid-week. Ahead of the
low, strong east northeast flow near the surface will result in
downsloping in the southern Black Hills, where gusts to 35 mph
will be possible Tuesday. As the strong frontal boundary passes
through the area, the tight pressure gradient on the backside of
the low will result in wind gusts up to 45 to 55 mph for
Wednesday afternoon and evening, with the strongest winds expected
east of the Black Hills and in south central SD with good
downsloping expected.
After passage of this system, dry conditions are expected the
remainder of the week, and the region should see a slight warm up
back to near normal temperatures as upper ridging builds over the
region this weekend. Sunday is expected to be the warmest day of
the forecast, and some areas in SD may see highs nearing 70
degrees. That is short lived though as models show another wave
moving through the northern plains next Monday/Tuesday. Currently
models keep any precipitation to the north of our forecast area,
but will have to monitor as we get closer to next week.
