.DISCUSSION...(Today Through Wednesday)

Latest water vapor analysis has an upper trough digging down the
California coast with a well defined ridge axis centered over the
Western High Plains. At the surface, low pressure is centered over
north central Wyoming and southern Montana, with a warm front
extending eastward across South Dakota into northern Minnesota. A
dryline also extends to the south of the low through central
Wyoming.

Today will be hot ahead of the approaching west coast trough. The
surface low will deepen over southeastern Montana later today,
creating breezy conditions which will advect hot, moist air into
the eastern half of the area. Dew points in the mid to upper 60s
over the eastern portion of the CWA will combine with the hot
temperatures, creating apparent temperatures over 100 degrees.
Thus a heat advisory will be issued east of a line from Dupree to
Phillip to Parmelee. Over northeastern WY, south to southwesterly
winds will become breezy in the morning and potentially quite
strong and gusty late in the afternoon. With humidity values
expected to drop to near or below 10 percent in the afternoon,
current red flag warning for the northeast WY plains looks like a
good call. Additionally, isolated mostly dry thunderstorms could
possibly develop late in the afternoon and early evening over this
area.

A strong shortwave will cross the Northern Rockies and Northern
Plains later today and tonight, but it doesn't reach the area
until early evening. MUCAPE is progged to reach 2000-3500 J/kg by
mid- afternoon, with the highest values toward central SD. Still
some uncertainty with the timing, but should generally be between
4 and 7 PM along and just ahead of the dryline/front in northeast
Wyoming, southeast MT, and far western SD. The 0-6 km shear will
increase toward early evening, especially across northern and
western areas. Supercells will be possible initially ahead of the
dryline/front late in the afternoon/early evening, but eventually
the storms will form into a line and propagate east ahead of the
shortwave during the overnight hours. Large hail and strong wind
gusts will be the main threats initially, with wind probably
becoming the more dominant threat as time goes on in the evening.
An isolated tornado or two cannot be ruled out either, mainly
across northwest SD nearer to the track of the surface low. Gusty
northwesterly winds will develop overnight behind the front as
cooler air pushes into the area, with models indicating pressure
rises of 8 to 10 mb over three hours. NAM/GFS model soundings are
not as impressive as the previous runs, but the potential still
exists for sustained winds over 40 mph and 60+ gusts. Thus will
upgrade to a high wind warning over northeastern Wyoming and far
southwestern SD and will have a later start time for the warning
due to the strongest winds occurring behind the front. At this
time have decided to hold off on wind highlights for the rest of
SD Plains, including northwestern SD through the areas just east
of Rapid City; due to the uncertainty of the mixing behind the
expected convection. Will let the day shift evaluate this area
further later today.

Heavy rain will also be possible with these storms, with
precipitable water 150-200% of normal. WPC has most of SD in a
marginal risk for excessive rainfall, with a portion of
northwestern SD in a slight risk. Localized flooding is possible
due to the recent rainfall, as the HREF does show 2+ inches of
additional rainfall possible over this area. However, the ongoing
drought conditions and the lack of any response from the past
heavy rainfall over the last week, will probably minimize any
threat.

Noticeably cooler temperatures, but around average, are expected
Friday behind the cold front, with highs in the 70s to lower 80s.
Breezy northwesterly winds will linger across the western SD
plains, but will gradually decrease in the afternoon. The cooler
conditions will be short-lived as the ridge builds over the
Northern Rockies this weekend and persists through at least the
first half of next week. Highs will be back in the 80s and 90s for
Saturday through Wednesday. Chances for storms look to be slim to
none over the weekend, but could start to see at least slight
chances for some areas early next week.

hail, thunderstorm winds gusts in excess of 80 MPH and isolated
tornadoes are possible.
