Issued at 217 AM MDT Sun Mar 28 2021

Potent upper trough is in the process of digging into the Pac NW,
with associated downstream ridging. This system will support a
widespread high wind event across the FA Monday, along with a
increased fire weather concerns. WAA is ensuing aloft, which will
spread east today via breezy westerly winds. Much warmer conds
expected today with highs in the 60s and few 70s. Increasing SW
flow ahead of the fast moving upper trough combined with a
standing mountain wave over the Black Hills and ongoing pressure
falls will support a decent downslope wind event late tonight in
the eastern Black Hills and adjacent foothills. Expect fluctuating
sustained winds of 25 to 40 mph with gusts over 60 mph there.
Strong SW flow will also mix down across the high plains of NE WY
(southern Campbell county). Given high confidence, have decided to
upgrade these areas to a high wind warning tonight, running it
through Monday for post frontal winds. Staunch sfc cyclone will
develop with this strong upper trough, supporting a strong cold
front. This front will rapidly advect through the region Monday
morning, clearing half if not more of the FA by noon. Strong
pressure rises, steep LL lapse rates, and vigorous CAA will
support a classic setup for very strong winds over much of the FA,
esp NW SD. Expect to see wind gusts over 70 mph in NW SD and in
the lee of the Black Hills. Hence, have upgraded this area to a
high wind warning. Given lower confidence, have left a portion of
the high wind watch out for the remainder of the area, mainly the
southern third and the rest of NE WY. Very dry air will wrap into
this system with not much precip expected. The only area that will
see some chances for rain/snow will be NE WY and the northern
Black Hills. Gusty winds will persist through Monday night and
into Tues, with adv level winds possible Tues over NW SD. Brief
period of cooler temps on track into mid week, with another sig
warm up toward the end of the week as another large upper ridge
pushes east supporting very warm temps. Dry conds will also
prevail in this period.

Gusty southwest winds will continue through the afternoon. While
the winds will decrease across most of the area this evening,
they will increase over northeastern WY and the northern/eastern
parts of the Black Hills. A cold front will move through the area
Monday morning, with winds switching to the northwest and
increasing to 25 to 45 kt with gusts to 55 to 65 kt, especially
over the northwest SD plains. Sky/visibility will remain VFR.
