Departing upper trough and cyclonic flow will continue to support
slightly unsettled conds today, with one more round of showers.
Shortwave upper ridge will then quickly build east and support
warm and dry weather Sunday and part of Monday, with windy
weather. Impulse rotating through the flow is supporting a band of
rain/snow showers across the SE third. Another area of
lift/instability will rotate into the FA later this morning and
support another round of sct/isold showers into this afternoon.
Drying BL will certainly limit coverage on the plains, with the
best chance for precip over the Black Hills per elevation. Drying
and clearing will commence tonight as a weak sfc ridge slides
east. Upper ridge will shift east Sunday with broad Rockies
downslope westerly flow supporting strong heating ahead of a
digging NW CONUS upper trough. Strong mixing both Sunday and
Monday will support deep mixing and resultant warm temps (more so
toward central SD Monday). However, a potent northern stream upper
trough will quickly dig into the northern Plains by Monday.
Forecast models continue to offer a faster arrival of the cold
front Monday, supporting a fast exit of the thermal ridge. Hence,
sig cooler temps are favored over the NW half as the sfc front is
expected to clear a large portion of the FA Monday morning. Would
not be surprised to see the front arrive even earlier in future
model runs given the strength of CAA/pressure rises, with highs
reached in the morning over the NW half. Before the front arrives,
strong LL SW flow will ensue ahead of the sfc front. Expected
flow combined with terrain effects from the Black Hills will
likely support a standing mountain wave with associated downslope
winds Sunday night into Monday morning. Forecast models, esp the
ECMWF and NAM indicated the potential for gusts over 60 mph in the
eastern portion of the SD Black Hills into the adjacent
foothills. Hence, given this persistent model signal, opted for a
high wind watch Sunday night into Monday morning there. Strong NW
winds can then be expected with the cold front with adv to
potentially warning level winds possible Monday, esp over NW SD
and in the lee of the Black Hills. As the upper trough and
associated jet streak begin to push into the western FA Monday,
expect increasing chances for showers in the west, mainly confined
to NE WY. Cooler temps are expected mid week, with another sig
warm up toward the end of the week as another large upper ridge
pushes east. Dry conds will prevail in this period.
