Water vapor shows rather flat ridge axis over the Rockies with
deep trof along and offshore the west coast. At the surface, warm
front has lifted into the eastern Dakotas with mild west/southwest
flow across our region. Northern Rockies lee trof is deepening.
Main forecast issue in the near term is strong winds for
today/tonight.
For today and tonight, a northern stream wave will move through
the Northern Rockies. Thermal ridge will peak across the western
Dakotas this afternoon resulting in temps well into the 50s over
the plains, and maybe few spots south/east of the Black Hills near
60. Lee trof will continue to deepen today ahead of this upper
wave and result in strong southwest winds over Campbell county.
Potential is high enough for at least a few 60+ gusts over this
area today into tonight to warrant a High Wind Warning. As the
pressure gradient strengthens across the Black Hills this evening
and overnight, a standing wave will develop and may result in 60+
wind gusts along the northern/eastern foothills. Most recent
guidance has relaxed the max pressure gradient to around 5mb
across the Black Hills, and there remains some question as to
whether the strong winds aloft will fully be able to reach the
surface...so will keep the High Wind Watch in place and allow the
day shift to further evaluate.
Backdoor cold front will slide into the area Friday and result in
a fairly large temp gradient from north to south depending on the
exact position of the front. Moistening boundary layer behind the
front could lead to some freezing fog Friday night but will not
introduce that into the forecast quite yet. Ejecting wave from
the long wave trof setting up over the western CONUS will bring
some chance for light snow Friday night into Christmas Day, but
models have trended further north and lighter with the QPF so not
expecting anything significant at this time.
Another wave arrives Sunday afternoon and night, but the best
forcing with this wave looks to remain north of our area, although
cloudy and chilly conditions will likely prevail with some small
chances for light snow to end the weekend.
Long wave trof will gradually build eastward into the central
CONUS next week, and allow surges of arctic air to penetrate well
south across the Plains. Highs by the middle to end of next week
may struggle to get out of the single digits with overnight lows
well below zero in spots. There aren't any strong signals for
significant snow at this time, but there will undoubtedly be some
chances for light snow.
