09z surface analysis had high over Lake Michigan with weak ridge
back into the CWA bringing clear skies over the northern 4/5ths of
the area. Water vapour showed upper low spinning into southwest
UT with trough into WY. Moisture ahead of storm is creating some
clouds entering the far southern reaches of the CWA. Upper low is
main concern this forecast.
Today through Sunday, models are generally converging on a similar
solution for the upper low, but NAM is still the farthest north. The
challenging forecast continues. Upper low will reach southeast CO
12z Sunday and then elongate from the NE panhandle to central KS as
it weakens by 12z Monday. Surface cyclogenesis occurs over southeast
CO this evening and then moves along the NE/KS border through 12z
Monday as inverted trough moves across eastern WY into the CWA.
Deformation zone will develop north of upper low spreading lift
into the southern half of the CWA tonight with well-defined lower
tropospheric frontogenesis and synoptic lift courtesy of 110kt
upper level jet action. Precipitation blob will slowly move north
tonight with onset of precipitation slowed by dry air coming off
1038mb SK surface high, which has been the trend over the past
couple of nights. Impressive moisture fetch with PWATs 150-200% of
normal. NAM continues to show epic upslope-enhanced precipitation
over the Black Hills, GFS warmest, and EC the most consistent.
Ensemble spreads tightening with warning criteria snows clustering
over the Black Hills, northeast through southern foothills, and
southwest SD. Gusty northeast/east winds will cause blowing snow
at times, but speeds right now don't look high enough to warrant
blizzard warnings. Blowing snow algorithm agrees. Warnings/advisories
painted to account. Confidence in snowfall totals is high over
the Black Hills/southwest SD, medium for the foothills, and low
east of the Black Hills into south central SD. The changeover time
from rain to snow will be critical on the plains. Recent warm
ground and heavy, wet nature of the snow will modulate snow
accumulation on the plains. One wild card is the effect of
expected convection over the southern plains this afternoon/night.
Temperatures will be near guidance over far northeast WY into
northwest SD, but below where main snows fall.
Unsettled weather will continue into Tuesday and Wednesday as
another upper low drops into mean trough over central North
America leading to cyclonic flow and some rain/snow.
Drier and warmer weather expected for the end of the week.
